Russian Army: Military units (Locations, equipment and re-armaments) Empty Russian Army: Military units (Locations, equipment and re-armaments)

Post  Benya Sat Jul 16, 2016 2:40 pm

I opened this topic for everyone who is interested in the Russian Army's units locations, their equipment or even their organizational structures, amd what new armament they will get.

For example I read that an "unnamed tank formation in Buryatia, Eastern Military District" received brand new "Tor-M2U" SAM systems. I've done some futher research, and the exact unit that received them is the "5th Detached Guards Tank Brigade", stationed in Ulan-Ude, Buryatia http://www.armyrecognition.com/july_2016_global_defense_security_news_industry/russian_eastern_military_district_to_receive_tor-m2u_surface-to-air_missile_systems_tass_30607161.html.

Have also seen reports that the 8th Brigade at Borzoi which is called a Mountain brigade has the same TO&E as the 33rd and 34th brigades.

Russian Army: Military units (Locations, equipment and re-armaments) Empty Armored/Mechanized Infantry Composition

Post  calripson Tue Aug 02, 2016 4:10 am

Future Russian armored divisions will have I assume three brigades of three battalions each ? How many tanks and IFV are in a battalion ? I assume the plan is to equip armored brigades with T-14 and T-15. Will motorized infantry brigades get Kurganetz or T-15 ? Where do the Bumerangs fit in

Also, in the past it appears as if the organic air defense components of armored and mechanized infantry forces were not sufficient for a NATO type enemy that relies so heavily on precision distance ordinance and air power. What would be a sufficient level of air defense assets and of what type at the division level ?

What would be a sufficient level of air defense assets and of what type at the division level ?

    First...

Cold War era tank divisions consisted of 3 tank regiments, 1 motor rifle regiment, a self-propelled artillery and an air defense regiment, plus additional support (anti-tank, recon, engineer, NBC defense, signal, maintenance, logistics and medical) battalions. Each tank regiment consisted of 2 tank battalions (3 companies with 10 tanks each). So in each tank regiment consisted of 60+2 tanks (those +2 tanks were for the commanders of each battalion). In total, in a tank division, there were around 186 tanks.

For the IFVs, in current motor rifle brigades there are 3 motor rifle battalions of 3 companies with 10 IFVs/APCs each, and a tank battalion of 4 companies (40+1 tanks in total). Around 120 IFVs/APCs and 41 tanks in total.

MT-LB battalion of a motor rifle brigade:

Tank battalion of a motor rifle brigade:
Russian Army: Military units (Locations, equipment and re-armaments) Russia%20-%20Tank%20Battalion%20of%20the%20Mechanised%20Infantry%20Brigade%202008

    Second...

Currently here are 3 types of motor rifle brigades:

    1. Equipped with BTR-80 APCs. These units will be reequipped with Boomerang APCs/IFVs.

    2. Equipped with MT-LB APCs. MT-LBs will be replaced with Kurganets APCs/IFVs (Mostly APCs, I think)

    3. Equipped with BMPs. Most of these units are using the BMP-2 variant, but there are several brigades that are using BMP-3. Older BMP-1s are retired and are kept in reserve. Kurganets IFVs/APCs (Mostly IFVs) will replace the current BMPs.

For future armored brigades, I'm not exactly sure, but I think they will have to be equipped with T-15 heavy IFVs, since it's based on the same platform as the T-14, and we are talking about Armata brigades.

    Third...

As for the aerial defense of the future divisions, I think that a SAM regiment equipped with a division(battalion) of Tor-M2 short range SAM systems, and a battery of a proposed SPAAG system mounted on Kurganets platform (replacing the 2S6 Tunguska combined SAM/SPAAG systems), plus a division of a very short range SAM (likely the Sosna-U system, replacing the 9K34/35 Strela) would cover the needs.

Well yes, even the 11th Army Corps of the Western Military District is missing too. Soon, I will add both of them too.

BTW I don't know why the units of the Eastern Military District are using pretty much obsolete equipment such as the BMP-1, ZSU-23-4 Shilka and 9P148 Konkurs-S ATGM vehicles?

Obsolete hardware like these cannot do much against their current adversaries.

They should be pretty much low on combat readiness, so maybe this is why they don't get new armament like the BMP-3 or at least T-72B3. Then the Russian Far East should be so peaceful that they don't require high-tech military units?

Post  GarryB Mon Aug 15, 2016 3:47 am

There are still brigades in the Far East using BMP-1.

    Actually that is a misnomer.

The BMP-2 did not actually replace the BMP-1, their armament was found to be complimentary and so they were both kept in service and that decision was actually reflected in the design of their actual replacement... the BMP-3 has both large calibre HE weapon and 30mm auto cannon.

    The BMP-3 didn't replace the BMP-2, just like the BMP-2 didn't replace the BMP-1.

The BMP-2 supplimented the BMP-1 and they both worked together in the role of IFV.

The BMP-3 replaced both the BMP-2 and BMP-1.

The BMP-1 needed the 73mm gun because it needed to be able to destroy enemy tanks at up to 300-400m, which was the minimum effective range of the AT-3.

Once the AT-4/5 entered service and had a minimum range of less than 25m they did away with the 73mm gun and replaced it with a 30mm cannon. It was found that the 30mm was excellent for a range of targets but some targets needed more HE fire power so the 73mm gun was retained by keeping the BMP-1 in service alongside the BMP-2.

The ultimate solution was to improve the HE fire power further with a 100mm rifled gun firing much more powerful HE rounds over much greater distances, combined with the 30mm cannon of a new design with a longer recoil stroke that reduced fumes in the turret during firing.

What I am trying to say is that the BMP-1 is not obsolete... with its 73mm gun and 4km range ATGM it is no worse than many modern IFVs in second line units... certainly superior to any M113 or FV432... which would be more comparable to the obsolete BTR-50.

They should be pretty much low on combat readiness, so maybe this is why they don't get new armament like the BMP-3 or at least T-72B3. Then the Russian Far East should be so peaceful that they don't require high-tech military units?

One of the goals of downsizing the Russian military is to have fewer low readiness units for a smaller better trained better equipped tighter force.

If you are looking at forces in the Far East then at least look at the forces they will be opposing rather than western forces and you will see there is nothing out of the ordinary.

I also fixed some wrong brigade numberings in various ORBATs:

-64th Detached Motor Rifle Brigade (Eastern MD)

    Previously, it was:
(64 OMSBR) 32nd Detached Motor Rifle Brigade (Knyaze-Volkonskoye, Khabarovsk region)

Now it is the 64th, just as it is in reality.

Same with the 69th Cossack Brigade of Security (Eastern MD, which was mistakenly the:

(69 OKBRP) 64th Detached Cossack Brigade of Security (Babstovo, Jewish Autonomous District)

Now it's the same as it is in reality

I also deleted the 8th Guards Detached (Mountain) Motor Rifle Brigade (Borzoi, Southern MD), after I found out that the brigade was disbanded in 2002.

I believe you will find the 8th Brigade very much alive and well in Borzoi. It was indeed disbanded in 2002 but was reformed in 2009 with the reorganization into brigades. The only question that exists to me is if it is actually organized as a Mountain Motor Rifle brigade (33rd & 34th) or as a standard Motor Rifle brigade (17th & 18th).

In overall terms the less modern part of the equipment as military concept are the heavy towed weapons. Surely the less modern as military concept of all the equipment cited would be:

    2B9 Vasilyok 82mm.
    2B14 Podnos 82mm.
    ZU-23-2 23mm.

In addition to them also some auxiliary vehicles seem getting out in the short-term.

This is where I would expect faster changes, if has not been done yet (good places to check finding recent updates):

Between the cited warfare, there are some cases that are variants of some more common mobile platforms:

    BMP-3 <- BRM-3K
    BMP-3 <- 9K123 Khrizantema-S
    2S19 <- 2S33
    BTR-80 <- RKhM-6
    BTR-80 <- RKhM-4
    MT-LB <- 1L219
    MT-LB <- 9P149 Shturm-S
    MT-LB <- ARK-1
    MT-LB <- Borisoglebsk-2
    MT-LB <- Snar-10

    BAZ-6909/10 <- Krasukha-4
    Kamaz-???? <- Leer-3 RB341V
    Kamaz-???? <- Murmansk-BM
    Kamaz-???? <- Polyana D4M1
    Kamaz-4130 <- ARS-14KM
    Ural-4320 <- 9T244
    Ural-4320 <- RPMK-1
    Zil-131 <- AZK-7
    Gaz-66 <- TDA-2K
    Ural-375 <- TMS-65U

    Thanks eehnie!

Actually, the Borisoglebsk-2 is mounted on 9 MT-LBu vehicles, the Leer-3, the ARS-14KM and the TDA-2K are mounted on KamAZ 5350 trucks (I will look after the others later).

eehnie wrote:This is where I would expect faster changes, if has not been done yet (good places to check finding recent updates):

Well yes, but right now I plan to add the lists of other units for each military district. My plan was to update my topics on a weekly basis (on the weekends), but after seeing the growing interest, I will try to update them ASAP.

Good to see them in more modern platforms. Then I will update my own post. The reference to the MT-LB is as generic name for all the MT-LBs. In fact this was the purpose of this comment. To link the less known warfare to their more known mobile platforms.

Yesterday I have edited the TO&E of the air defense regiments that are using Buk-M1/S-300V4 AD missile complexes, for all four military district

    Buk-M1 units:

    -Equipment: 4 division/battalion sets of 9K37-M1 "Buk-M1" medium-range SAM systems (24 9A310M1 launchers (TELs) and 12 9A39 transloader-launchers (TELLs), 1 9S18M1 "Kupol-M1" (NATO code: "Snow Drift") target aquisition and engagemet/fire control radar, 1 9S470M1 regiment/brigade level command post)

Note that in some cases (especially in the Eastern MD) there are 3 battalions instead of 4.

    S-300V4 units:

-Equipment: 2 division/battalion sets of S-300V4 long-range SAM/ABM systems (8 9A82M and 16 9A83M launchers with radars (TELARs), 4 9A84M and 8 9A85M transloader-launchers (TELLs), 4 9S32 (NATO code: "Grill Pan") battery level engagement/fire control radars, 1 9S15M2 "Obzor-3" (NATO code: "Bill Board") early warning/target aquisition radar, 1 9S19M2 "Imbir" (NATO code: "High Screen") sector surveillance radar, 1 9S457M regiment level command post)

The only consistent in the Russian military is the inconsistent. Very Happy

You will find Buk brigades with from 2 to 4 battalions / divisions (6 TELAR and 3 TELL each)

The same with the 300V brigades, from 1-3 battalions (6 TELAR and 3 TELL each) and sometimes Buk battalions are also added to the 300V brigade.

It is strange, that a brigade has 2-3 battalions. A normal brigade is made up from 4-6 battalions at least (Even a SAM brigade should have 4 battalions at very least)

Plus I forgot to mention one thing that I added yesterday to the Western MD:

(3 Gv MSD) 3rd Guards Motor Rifle Division (Boguchar, Voronezh region)

Forming started in 2016, and likely to end in 2017. Forming on the base of the 9th Detached Motor Rifle Brigade, inherited its personnel and equipment.

    -Equipment: -Equipment: 40 T-72B3 MBTs, 1 T-72BK battalion commander's MBT, 120 BMP-2 IFVs, 11 BTR-82A APCs, 25 BTR-80A APCs, 15 MT-LB APCs, 4 BRDM-2 armored scout cars, 36 2S3 Akatsiya 152mm self-propelled howitzers, 18 BM-21 Grad MLRS systems, 18 2B11 Sani 120mm towed mortars, 12 MT-12 Rapira 100mm towed AT guns, 27 9K38 Metis portable ATGMs, 12 9P149 Shturm-S self-propelled ATGM systems, 12 9A33BM2 Osa SAM systems, 6 9K34/35 Strela-10 SAM systems, 6 2S6M Tunguska SAM/SPAAG systems, 27 9K38 Igla shoulder-launched SAMs

I'm not sure about the 3rd Division yet. Perhaps it is at Valuyki and based on the 23rd MR brigade transferred over from Samara. We should know in the next few months.

The redeployment of the 55th separate motorized infantry (mountain) brigade in Tuva
