just looking  for people's  opinions Smile
I've always  found  soviet aircraft better looking than their boxy NATO equivalents(for  example  Su-27 and MiG-27 are  cooler looking than F-15  and tornado). Do you?

So  basically here are my  top 5 favorite  soviet cold war  planes:
    1.Yak-28
    2.Su-15
    3.MiG-23
    4.Su-7
    5.Tu-22M

    MIG 31 - Foxhound of course .

The Foxhound was designed to solve a unique Russian problem – covering its vast air space with limited aircraft.

And the Foxhound achieved this with it's unique ability for sustaining supersonic cruise up to 722 km, increasing to 2200 km with inflight refuelling , a capability with no equivalent in the West .

    Agree Very Happy

Unsurpassed even by now. MIG-31 could supercruise at Mach 2.35 for 47 minutes. Thats insanely long even by todays standards.

Mig 31 is fantastic. As was the Fulcrum for its era IMO.
An-225 is incredible (-shame there is the West Ukrainian problem..even today).

But pride of place MUST go to one other bird. I don't even think its a fair competition.
The Tu-160 White Swan. That is sex with wings...
The speed, the size, the power, the beauty of it.

If only something like that could become the nextgen Super-Airliner..
OR something to shut up America as the answser to their Air Force One.. Very Happy

I'd be pretty disappointed if something like that didnt become a Pak-fa..

There aren't many Soviet planes I don't like, some of the older ones like the ANT-25 long range plane was cool... if it had not landed in the US after a nonstop flight from Russia then the US Congress would have cancelled work on the B-17, but then it was a precold war aircraft.

I also like the M-17 high altitude plane, and I also like the lines of the Su-15.

The Tu-128 was also an interesting aircraft and I do like the Mig-31, Tu-22M3, and Su-24.

I also like the Mig-8, with its pusher propeller and swept wing design and canard foreplane layout... all very forward thinking in the early 1940s.

IMO the MiG-8 loks kind of ugly. But I agree with the other aircraft.

My favorite of Soviet era aircrafts are definitaley
1# MiG-31 it's just awesome from every point of view, it is sexy it is the fastest combat plane ever build, it has the highest altitude and even Anti-Satellite weapons were designed and launched from it.

2# Su-27 and MiG-29, you can say everything but this are the most smoothest and sexiest planes of the entire 4th generation fighters. I personally love the MiG-29 two seat version it looks like a great white shark with the air intakes like fish gills and the Su-27 outperformce every fighter from its time and even today Su-27 families just asskickers.

3# Su-25 which is except of US A-10 an uncommon role for todays times but highly capable and most missions were just unancomplishable without massive losses or to many Overkills through other weapon systems.
It is literally a flying tank.

4# MiG-23/27 i like this design from the swept swings to the weaponary of Gsch 630.

2# Su-27 and MiG-29, you can say everything but this are the most smoothest and sexiest planes of the entire 4th generation fighters. I think you meant with "aircrafts" only planes but by the definition of the word it implies Helicopters too.

And i want to quote General Hammond of Stargate episode with the Marionettes

Gen. Hammond: So doctor let it spin.

    Doctor: It can not spin.

Gen. Hammond: But it's round, it has to spin. Spinning is so much cooler than not spin. I am the General, i want it to spin, now!

This silly introductions come to my favorite Mi-24 Crocodile an unique design and served so many wonderful years and will serve at least to 2020.

And of course like my name states out i also just fell in love with the Ka-50 Black Shark or the much cooler name Werewolf it had in the past.

    ---------------------------------
    - The Legends -
    ---------------------------------

    - Mig 21 The best of the best. The palm of all supersonics aircrafts. More than 12.000 -included chinese F7- produced. The legend!
    - Mig 15, downed few thousands US aircrafts, it desserves for me a special price.
    - Mig 17, US pilots in Vietnam knwow something about the Fresco. It downed several dozens of Phantoms, and F-105, F8, moreover, it is worth to recall that this aircradt is subsonic.
    - Mig 19
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Others, obviously, that does not mean, they are more bad.

    - Mig 29
    - Su 15
    - Su 27/35
    - Mig 25/31.
    - Su 7
    - Su 17/22

This is a hard question, because without fighters, IL 76 could esily be an excellent aircraft, beside An 124, An 12, An 80.

    1. MiG-29 Fulcrum attack

    2. MiG-31

    3. YAK-141 So what it was cancelled it flew.

    4. MiG-21

    5. YAK-3 "Beware the Yak fighter without an oil cooler under its nose."

Honorable mention: MiG-23 Iraq shot this one down. YAK-38 even the best mess up really bad on occasion.

The MiG-23... especially the late model ML versions were very underrated aircraft... they had very good range, and blistering acceleration that even early model MiG-29s had trouble keeping up with.

Many criticised the fixed sweep positions instead of the more sophisticated fully variable sweep designs in the west... but it really wasn't rocket science... minimum sweep for takeoff and long range low speed cruise, max sweep for max speed at low and high level, and of course mid sweep for max manouver capability in the dog fight or supersonic cruise.

Most of the time min sweep for takeoff, mid sweep to accelerate and climb, full sweep for high speed dash to target and then mid sweep to fight target and home and min sweep to land. You really don't need a computer changing the sweep angle 200 times a second...

Its BVR missiles... the R-23 and later R-24 gave it much better reach than the MiG-21 had.

Early model MiG-29s for export were inferior to Russian/Soviet late model MiG-23MLs in terms of acceleration, IRSTs, radar performance, and weapons.

Mig-31 ofc. with cruising speed comparable to short range missile's speed- its like that xzibit meme brought to life.

    The MiG-31

    The Su-27

    The Kamov Ka-25

    The Beriev Be-12

For me it would be the MiG-23 and the Il-76. Both two aircraft looking like they run on Vodka, which is always a good thing. When I was a child the MiG-23 nearly made me scared, it looks so menacing.

The only Western aircraft (post WW2) I like just as much are the Tornado and the Blackburn Buccaneer.

I have always had a soft spot for the Buccaneer... a very underrated aircraft... and those curves.

It wasn't as fast as an F-16 but could carry the same number of nuclear bombs under its wings and fly faster than an F-16 at low level and it could fly further... and most importantly it could do it from the deck of an aircraft carrier...

Coolest Soviet Cold War aircraft ?

Undoubtedly, MiG-25/31, the one who set the standards for later Russian and American 4th gen fighters.

A Yak fan that does not mention the Yak-25RV?

That was an awesome aircraft... though it had its problems... even at engine idle the aircraft would not descend from high altitude and to come down they often resorted to lowering the landing gear...

Two Soviet aircraft I regret never became operational were the Yak-141 and the MiG 1.44. The last one was exposed last year in MAKS and still looks great, hope it will be kept in a museum.

Mig-23 ML/MLD a very underrated aircraft largely because of propoganda ( which was based on performance of Mig-23MS and Mig-23MF)

at the height of the cold war in 1985 there were 1100 in the VVS/PVO alone not counting the WP airforces

Had BVR weapons when the Mirage III/V/Kfir /F-16/F-5E didnt
    Had good range
Can have a secondary nuclear attack role
    Was relatively cheap
    aerodynamic performance closer to F-4E
