KIEV, April 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukraine's parliament-appointed interim President OleksanderTurchinov said at a parliament session on Thursday that the 25th paratroopers brigade will be dissolved.

On Monday, the brigade, stationed near the town of Sloviansk, Donetsk region, sided with people's militia, acting mayor and commander of self-defense battalion Vyacheslav Ponomaryov told ITAR-TASS.

When their enemies in Kiev are such morons, the DPR defenders probably don't need to break much of a sweat. Ukraine is going to eat itself even without them.

Not sure if its the guys you mean but about 200 paratroopers were disarmed yesterday; as a result of negotiations they all took the bolt carriers out of their AKs, handed them over, and then turned around back to Dnepropetrovsk, along with their vehicles. And now that brigade has been disbanded by Tuchinov's order; so anyone else still hanging around would be demobilized or transfered to other units

now the Ukrainian tycoon, Dmitrij Firtash - is announcing the suspension of production at 4 chemical plants

Kharkov activists from the Oplot organization indeed liquidated a pro-Maidan checkpoint at one of the roads into Kharkov
    http://rusvesna.su/news/1397682342

Apparently, there was a fight at a pro-Maidan checkpoint in Odessa too.

    ======================================================

According to some witnesses (there are a couple of vids about from the event), the bloody events at Mariupol yesterday was the result of the National Guard opening fire on protestors who came, unarmed, to a military unit with a call for the soldiers to put down their arms. Fire from automatic rifles and machine guns was opened, several bullets richochet off buildings and so on - hitting protestors, killing 1.

    http://vognebroda.net/vlasti-na-ukraine-zhelayut-skryt-istinnoe-polozhenie-veshchey-o-zhertvah-stolknoveniy-v-mariupole

There is another version, that people were organized by several provocateurs, to try and take the military unit by storm, up to 500 people were there, tried to storm the gate; then fire was opened up, 3 were killed, dozens injured and over 60 arrested.
Molotov cocktails were thrown some time later after fire was opened, when protestors returned

But more than likely, this is all part of the same event; i.e. people first gathered to the military base to talk, the National Guard opened fire, injuring several - and then a huge crowd formed and tried to storm the base.

    Basically, details are still unclear.

    ======================================================

Donetsk residents are right now occupying the Donetsk airport, allegedly led by about 50 members of the Donetsk Berkut.
It was earlier surrounded by people, and then they went inside and took over.

Apparently the airport management have expressed sympathy for the DPR, and had negotiations with the protestors

Ukrainian military are present, looking out the windows. According to some info, there are members of the Ukrainian Police Interior Forces armed with SVD rifles, positioned on top of buildings.

    Lavrov: Ukraine crisis 'agreement reached'

bbc wrote:Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that all sides have agreed to steps to "de-escalate" the crisis in Ukraine at talks in Geneva.

He was speaking at the end of the talks between Russia, Ukraine, the EU and US in the Swiss city.

Ukraine has been in crisis since the toppling of its pro-Moscow president in February.

This was followed by the seizing of government buildings in eastern Ukraine by pro-Russian separatists.

Mr Lavrov said there was agreement that all illegal military formations in Ukraine must be dissolved, and that everyone occupying buildings must be disarmed and leave them.

He added that there would be an amnesty for all protesters under the agreement.

Mr Lavrov said the crisis must be settled by Ukrainians themselves and there must be long-term constitutional reforms.

    This news..

Over 50 Ukrainian Armored Vehicles Rolling Toward Donetsk - Activists

DONETSK, April 16 (RIA Novosti) - Pro-federalization activists in Ukraine’s southeastern city of Donetsk say more than 50 military armored vehicles of the Ukrainian Army have been spotted in the region and are now closing on the city.
“Fifty six times of various vehicles are underway, including infantry fighting vehicles, personnel carriers and trucks for transporting people. They are moving toward Donetsk. We are getting ready to stop them,” Igor Khakimzyanov, chief of the so-called “people’s army” in the self-proclaimed Donetsk Republic, told RIA Novosti.

That news happened AFTER ,the 6 captured APC that switched sides.,. it was a new group of armored vehicles heading to DONETSK...
Any idea what happened to that large group of soldiers. in armored cars ? haven't heard anything about them..

There were many groups of BMDs all day

    One of them was seized

Another one broke through when a Ukrainian serviceman threatened to suicide-bomb himself with a grenade

Another one broke through when Ukrainian servicemen started firing into the air beside the protestors and a BMD ran over a Lada Niva (or what looked like one)

And then about 200 in total were surrounded and caught in an encirclement for several hours. In the end they agreed to disarm themselves, and then turned around on their vehicles and left.

In another note.. it looks like the mistral will be good for the black sea.. and use the helicopters as an early warning system of cruise missiles flying low and to track submarines. One for the black sea.. and another for Northen Sea and another for Far east. That is if Russia still plan to buy them and there is no reverse.

Nope. They'll go to northern/pacific fleets. Black sea is too small for such ships.

I can't help but feeling that Russia either:
    -Has lost this round; or
-Is playing a losers role on purpose...

But who knows what they have in mind, or what they've been (possibly) threatened with.

I'm feeling a bit angry by this whole situation and the cemented hypocrisy by 'The West'.

It's not the Crimea, Russia is not playing a hand in this latest episode, or not much one - as it has been saying all along.

So what did it lose?  Razz

It escaped sanctions, and that's good

The agreement is non-enforceable, so it will fail anyway, but now Russia has legitimized its position.

I believe it is pretty clear what Putin is doing. Russia can do whatever she likes in Ukraine but if she acts immediately taking half Ukraine will be more difficult to grab the Western Ukraine in a couple of years. On the other hand if she grabs all Ukraine immediately will be confronted with a huge unrest and dissatisfaction and a widespread panic among neighboring countries who will fear Russias power.

He practically keeps the tensions high while waiting the situation in Western Ukraine to mature slowly but surely. Then he will have enough excuses to react decisively engulfing all Ukraine. To give it with an example, if USA was not so impatient with Vietnam to step in during the 60s now Vietnam would have been capitalist, equally all Korea would had been capitalist once became evident that communism is failing but by creating high tensions with the civil war North Koreans resisted long enough for China to emerge and Russia to recover.

The plan, to me, is simple. Why to take half Ukraine now when you can take whole a little later.

Well, if we count forced demonstrations of university students under the threat of expulsion, then yes, that support is not universal indeed  Wink

    --------------------

Anyway, regardless if these political agreements will hold or not, I'm greatly relieved to see the situation between russia and west deescalating, for now at least.

But I also thought that these talks would include the gas supply situation. Appearantly that wasn't the case.
So, does anyone know when the gas supply talks could be held?
