Novorossiya Armed Forces (NAF) - Page 6 Empty Interview with "Czech"

Post  Aristonicus Wed Mar 09, 2016 1:29 pm

I came across this interview with a Czech volunteer with the NAF. I thought that I would post it here so as not to clutter the main thread while the UAF is brewing something up.

    Original Russian: http://ukraina.ru/interview/20150708/1013596916.html

    Part 1
Oldrich "Czech" Grund: Under Debaltseve we lost 40% of our tank battalion

Czech volunteer lieutenant colonel of tank troops DNR in an interview with "Ukraina.Ru" about how he fought in Slaviansk and Ilovaisk, and that when he will be able to allow himself a cup of beer
    Oldrich, aren’t you from Prague?
    - No, (used to live on) the border with Germany.
    - You are a Czech. For Czech volunteer coming to Donbass to fight for Novorossia requires at least sympathy for the Russian world. And how to be with a tooth (meaning: hidden anger – RA), which Czechs are supposed to have on Russians, because in 1968 Soviet tanks crushed the Prague Spring? After all, you, on the contrary, should fight for Ukraine. What was your motive to come to the Donbass? Aren’t you angry at Russians for the Prague Spring?
    - I do not take offence to the Russians. No reasons for it. The fact is, when, in August 1968 in Prague, Warsaw Pact troops entered, I was not born yet. I was born in 1975. You see, those who take offensce at Russians, tend to live in Prague. And if you move 60 kilometers away from Prague – people start to perceive you by what personality you are. Everything! Even though you're Russian, though you’re a German. Nobody does not make a difference. All people. In the Czech Republic there are good people and there are bad.
    - When you and your friends have decided to come to fight in the Donbass?
    - When it all began, there was not much on TV about this (events). Basically all they antagonize Russia. Nothing particular. Only in Internet one could find information. After reading it, it was possible to identify and draw conclusions. When it all began in Slavyansk, I immediately came to the conclusion that the beginning of the second Yugoslavia. When I saw that they were civilians - old men, women and children - being killed with phosphorus and chlorine, I just went mad. Again, when I saw how Ukrainian nationalists fly the flags of the Third Reich, I would like to ask them a question: have you mixed up something? And I decided, if I can help, then I should go help. I knew where I was going and what I was doing. I knew I could be killed. If a person goes to war, they must be ready for anything.
    - What was your profession before the war?
    - As a mechanic, a specialist in fuel equipment. Diesel engines and fuel injection equipment. Before the war, I worked for three years on crawler excavators, and the rest of the time - the trucks.
    -  Served in Czech army?
    - Yes, (was) the driver of the tank T-55 AM2. I served in 1993. Czech Republic was only just then entering NATO.
    - You've come to the Donbass alone or with friends?
    - I arrived in Slavyansk alone. When we left Slavyansk for Donetsk, along came my friend from Brno. He was a physical education teacher. And somewhere in the middle of July came my brother. He hitchhiked across Ukraine. I myself managed to come via Belarus to Russia, and then came here from Russia. We were just with ‘Thor’ and fought under the Saur-Mogila and in Stepanovka.
    - When you come to Slavyansk, where did you go, to enlist in the militia?
    - I arrived at the Russian border. Talked with the guys there ... I was travelling not alone but with Russians. We joined there with them, drove to the border at Izvarino. We were then driven across the border, and from there to Krasnodon. It was the end of May. On June 3, I was already in Slavyansk. There I met with Strelkov. He was meeting every newcomer personally. Greeting, communicating with every one.
    - Can you remember your conversation with him?
    - (Laughing) He was surprised that citizen of the Czech Republic arrived in Slavyansk. There I was the first foreigner. He questioned me how I managed to reach Slavyansk. It was him giving announcements via Internet: anyone who may - come to Slavyansk. Help needed: tankers with experience to help to teach. I thought that I would go as tanker: help by teaching. Strelkov told me that he was very pleased.
    - And there, in Slavyansk, as I recall, there was "Nona". So you drove it?
    - Yes. Two "Nona", which were in Slavyansk, inherited from the 25th Airmobile Brigade. When the militia seized Artemovsk military unit, also from there came two "Nona". When exiting from the Slavyansk we had one "Nona" left, because of a broken clutch. The motor was removed, the engine is not present, there is no transmission. We have failed to fix it. By the time of exit (from Slavyansk –RA). I had to leave her there. We took off with it all they could. We tried to set fire to it, but for some reason it failed to burn. And when Ukrainian troops moved to our base where we were in Slavyansk, they found her and took her to Kiev, to the museum. And the other "Nona" was working, so come with us from Slavyansk.
    - What was your first fight?
    - We went to a position to fire at the columns of "Grad" and "Uragans" passing by. They moved toward Semyonovka with Motorola, Trump (“Козырь”) and Cap(itan). There were a lot of people. Just recruited fresh crew. The first combat mission. One "Nona" works, shoots, and the second, we can not load. It is necessary to do it in wise way. Well nobody knew. The first trip we have not fired a single bullet. My gunner was the guy who served on a D-30, and the "Nona" is all different. So we had to take our time to investigate. During the second mission... There was a fire depo on Artema street. We got into position. In the morning we moved there. We have struck Dill (Pro-Ukrainians) with two Nonas. We had two crews. One behind the "Nona" and the other - on the roof. Correcting fire from there. Then we hit the convoy. Caught in a feed mill, and then they turned to chemical weapons storage.
    - Phosphorus?
    - No chlorine. We hit it. It was four o'clock in the afternoon. The wind, thank God, was in their (enemy-RA) direction, and not in the direction of the city. Up to 6 o'clock in the morning there drove ambulances. The next day there was news in the Internet, it's all done by fifteen hundred Russian special forces and heavy tanks. Survivors there heard cries of "Allahu Akbar!".
    - Well it's Motorola broadcasting the tapes with prayers of Muslims.
    - Yes, Motorola. Every morning Motorola was placing loudspeakers and switching on prayer. They thought that there are Chechens, the Russian troops. We thought that would be a part of Donbass and Russia, as well as the Crimea. I think that Russia will help. That's right, they will come. But she did not come. Everyone understands that if (Russia) does come, it will start the Third World. It is, however, already going on. Thank you for this comrade Obama and unfortunate Merkel.

Novorossiya Armed Forces (NAF) - Page 6 Empty Interview with "Czech" part 2

Post  Aristonicus Wed Mar 09, 2016 1:29 pm

    - But you have George Cross hanging on your chest. What it is awarded for?
    - I got it for the exit from Slavyansk. We were providing cover for column leaving city. And my "Nona" broke right at this moment. Clutch failure. We repaired it under (enemy) fire to be able to use gearbox without clutch (this is not clear in Russian original-RA).
An order was given - I still do not know by whom. Someone ran from the darkness and said to me “Commander, why do you not moving?”  I answered: “the clutch failed, can’t switch gears”. Person asks “Do you have hand grenade?” I answered: “Yes I have”. He: “then blow the vehicle along with ammunition and leave on foot over fields for Kramatorsk”. We were getting each vehicle in fight from enemy in Slavyansk, how could I blow it now? Impossible. I managed to start the vehicle and drove it to Kramatorsk. Twice stalled engine by the road. There were columns of destroyed cars on this road. A lot of our guys were killed. But we dragged ourselves to Donetsk.
The Slavyansk armour group (before breaking out from the city) received order: to go to the outskirts of the city. There had been four tanks. Three were runners, one not. The order was: to fire at Ukrainian troops checkpoint. It was distracting blow. Hospital patients, the elderly and children have been evacuated already at 2pm. There was only one way – through the fields. And it was under fire. We fired on the checkpoint and at Karachun where they had guns. The Armour group was ordered to cover the column, and then move over the fields to Kramatorsk. But it turned out that someone had taken command. No-one give him order to break out through checkpoint. And those who took command himself, gave the order to go through the checkpoint. Seventy percent of the armoured group - three tanks, BMD, BMP - all destroyed there. Who gave the order, I still do not know. Igor Ivanovich (Strelkov – RA) did not give such an order. He tried to take care of all the people. If the shelling began, he was always ordering: “Guys, keep away from vehicles. If something happens to the "hardware" - is not terrible”. (Laughs) “Our recon will get new vehicles from Ukrainian army”.
    - You had enough fuel in Slavyansk for tanks and other equipment. Was it enough ammo?
    - At first, Ukrainians where abandoning all and fleeing 2-3 km away. We come, and see they have a lot of inventory there. Tank shells we had, but they were few. We took them when pushed dill (Ukrainians-RA) or ambushed their column. Once we got "Ural" loaded with shells. For the "Nona" munitions were, however, rare. Sometimes 120-mm mortar shells came across. "Nona" can shoot them. Small arms come across. AKs were burned. Guys who knew how to do it restored them. At first some of us were armed with hunting rifles. When Artemovsk warehouse was taken, some of us got SKS carbines and some got Mosin-Nagan rifles.
If Russia, according to what Ukrainian propaganda is saying, provided vehicle and weapons for Slavyansk - we would still be there.
    - Do you think whether it was possible not to leave Slavyansk? And if yes, how could it be held?
    - Owners of gas stations helped us with fuel. Nobody asked for money. But it never was in a way like to come with a car and a gun and demanded to be filled up. There was order and discipline. With us, people shared everything, even though they had little themselves. All we respected each other. Ammunition, if we did not leave Slavyansk, we would have enough only for a week.
    - Was outside help reaching you?
    - Yes. Donetsk was doing their best. They tried, whenever possible, to supply us with what they found in the strategic stocks. All here too it was not easy. The fact is that while Artemovsk was under our control, we had a lot of things. What they had time to transport to Donetsk, then was sent to us.
    - And the second medal you have is - "For Defence of Slavyansk"?
    - Yes.
    - When you come to Donetsk, in what battles have you participated?
    -  We where thrown first to Netaylovo and Karlovka. (North of Donetsk airport, under Ukr Army now – RA)
    - And why did you evacuate Karlivka? They say that if you had not evacuated Karlivka, then the Ukrainians could not capture Avdeevka and Peski, and then there would not be these terrible attacks of Donetsk and the airport would then be taken quickly.
    - Why? Because we did not have anything to defend it with. We were armed with AKs only.
    - And no armour?
    - No. All vehicles were under repair after Slavyansk. The tanks have appeared only after the Ilovaisk encirclement and Stepanovka.
    - How many have you got there?
    - If only tanks counted - from 300 to 400.
    - Has Ukrainians abandoned all this?
    - Yes, all the Ukrainians have left behind. They also left "Grads", S-1 and D-30. As soon as dill (Ukrainians – RA) retreated from Illovaisk, Kuteynikova, Zerkalnaya  - we immediately moved in this forest strip (between fields – RA), and there were four SPGs standing, landmine-laying vehicles with AT -mines. We took it all.
Then we went on Starobeshevo with one person who began his service in Snejoye. Took two self-propelled howitzers "MSTA-S" there. One was taken away by MGB (Ministry of state security of Donetsk republic – RA), and the second one – by Cossacks (laughs)
    - And how did the Cossacks take it?
    - Yes, we drove from the fields to the road. While we drove to take another one, they (Cossacks) came, hooked it up and dragged it away (laughs).
    - Cossacks of Kozitsyn?
    - No, another (unit). Some Cossacks are normal, do fighting, everything. Others live as the saying goes, "For some people war is best time to prosper" (my translation of Russian proverb meaning – RA). Someone fills his pockets, while others fight for conscience.
    - So now you go to battle on these vehicles?
    - Yes.
    - I know that your friend and your brother died. How did this happen?
    - They died on August, 12 (2014). There was a battle, close to town of Krasny Luch in Lugansk Republic. There they were killed. They served under the command of “Cap”. First Miusynsk was liberated. They travelled by car. He was given the order to drive to the outskirts of the village, to see what is going on there. They went there by car, and they were fired at by a BMP. They managed to jump out of the car, but immediately came under fire. The boys were killed. The elder brother Vojtech Hlinka died immediately and the other friend Ivo Steyskalu’s foot was blown away by a BMP shot. There's the 30mm caliber. The Ukrainians came and finished him. And ride the same BMP over them. They were buried by local man in Miusynsk. And when we liberated Saur-Mogila on September 27, it was the official reburial: their bodies were moved to Saur-Mogila.
    - I interviewed former Defense Minister Valery Geletey. He told me that the Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office found that the encirclement at Ilovaiskaya killed just 107 people. You as a participant in those fights can you comment on that figure?
    - In Ilovaiskaya encirclement? Five thousand.
    - Have you seen corpses of Ukrainian soldiers personally?
    - Not only seen but felt. They even did not take their dead. They abandoned them. You go and smell. Just walk into the forest strips between the fields and listen. Even the dead were not buried. In the DNR was created a group that investigated who and where the dead lay. Sometimes they are simply covered with earth, and then go and picked up. You open burned destroyed vehicles, and there are charred bones inside. Someone is identified - and then handed the Ukrainians. And what has been done under the Debaltseve. “Dill” dragged transportable crematorium and burned their fighters. And then they said they were missing. If missing, the money will not have to be payed to anyone.
Here in our conversation comes Vitali "Thor" Yudin, a friend of "Czech." - You know, on this occasion there is even an anecdote. Someone knocks at the door of Paradise. Peter opens, and there is a large crowd. Several thousand “dill”. He: Who came? Dill answer: We're defended our home, we are promised to go to Paradise. Peter: strange, by summaries of the Ministry of Defence only 102 people lost.
We laugh. Again, I ask questions, "Cech." - Under Ilovaiskaya you fought with tanks?
    - No. With guns. First in Ilovaiskaya it was then we were transferred to Stepanovka under Saur-Mogila. And then I was sent to Strarobeshevo. We liberated it. Near Saur-Mogila were our guys, and we went from Starobeshevo take them into the cauldron.
    - Talking with the prisoners?
    - Yes. I can tell you one thing: I have friends among the prisoners.
    - Even so? How did this happen?
    - We captured surrendered tankers. Good guys. I do not want you to call them names. They've got a family at all. They helped us to restore vehicles. No one was hurt. We gave them food, and cigarettes. The first thing we did when I took them captive: take phone - call home. Say that you're alive and you're all right, but you're a prisoner. At best, it is clear no one is let. They helped us to restore good vehicles. They're great. They then got exchanged. I recently called up with one. He came home. Again people come to him from the recruiting office, and drafted him again as a tanker, but, thank God, he managed to escape to Germany. Now he is denounced as a traitor, and they are harassing his mother.
    - Were you involved in the encirclement at Debaltsevo?
    - Yes, this time in a tank. We came from the Lugansk Republic direction. In the battles of Sanzharovkoy. There were very strong fortifications. There were a lot of our good guys killed. To be honest, 40% of the battalion lost at Sanzharovkoy.
    - Why? Because Ukrainians are much stronger and have learned to fight?
    - Because of our bad intelligence. According to my information, they did not carry out a reconnaissance. They just come to the front with the infantry, and talked with the guys. Those they tell something, and all the more they did not find out. We are told, rise to a height, drive 3.5 km. There's forest strip there. Dig in. And then after another 300 meters are pro-Ukr position. All the time it was fog. My guys are passing 600 meters and turn right on the Ukrainian positions. And from the trenches they (pro-Ukrainians) began to burn our tanks. One after another. And then what did the chief of intelligence do? He took the gun and shot himself in the foot in the soft tissue. Oh, I was wounded, oh, I was wounded. And to me the tankers come: what kind of rubbish is this? I go, it turns out, he was shot in the leg. And now, it turns out, he got an award for it.
    - A nightmare.
    - This is what nightmares are, I'm sorry ... it's useless. Sorry boys.
    - Are there other Czechs fighting here?
    - I heard that, yes, but I, unfortunately, did not meet with them.
    - And here you answer to me as a Czech, Russian and Ukrainian beer good? Better or worse then Czech?
    – Here as soon as you are drunk, write a report and leave the army. So this is what I can tell you only after the victory.

Hello, I'm not sure very up to speed about the situation in Novorossiya, and to be honest I'm a little confused. Was it not announced on May 20th 2015 that the project of a confederation between the DPR and LPR was frozen?

Officially yes it is frozen. As an entity of its own. But it doesn't mean it is gone neither. Essentially, the idea behind it was shelved in hopes of obtaining special republic status in Ukraine. But obviously that is failing so most believe that Novorussia will become an entity by default without even many pushing for it. Neither Donetsk or Lugansk wants to be part of Ukraine.

It's good to know the autonomous republics are still going strong... Has there been any major developments in 2016 yet?

If you are referring to the existence of the Novorossiya Armed Forces, it was a matter of survival that the two republics co-ordinate their defense and a joint military was formed. It has a joint High Command with two Army Corps. The 1st Corp is the troops of the Donetsk Republic and the 2nd Corps is the troops of the Lugansk Republic.

Very much a threat. The NAF said that they have been recruiting about a thousand volunteers a month lately. Don't know how many had left to be replaced but they had reached a total of 70-75,000 regulars and reservist last summer. Basically cut off at that total due to lack of weapons for more. All members are volunteers, last summer the figure was about 10% foreign mostly Russian, 20% from other regions of Ukraine and 70% local (this was for the regulars which was about half the total force)

Thank you! I was thinking about all the videos posted at mpnet in the beginning and wished there was somewhere to view all of them, from beginning to now!

    It's my unique pleasure.

Last page has images from Lugansk (Russian) Death Trek. Over 40 tanks, about 25/30 IFV's and countless vehicles. When you hear about Ilovaisk, most of it is a week long fight. The Lugansk death Trek was done in two days. Baghdad Rolling thunder has nothing on this.

Could you tell me more about this "Death Trek"?
Someone supporting the rebels decided to get secretly involved and smashed whatever the Ukrops had there.

KoTeMoRe, do you by chance have any realistic lead to what were the casualty numbers that the Ukrops sustained during the whole North Wind ordeal? The official figures from the Ukrainian Military are laughably low while the NAF guesses seem too high.

Death Trek is movement made by "Russian" armored battalion in the rear of Ukrainian forces along M04/E40(Novoanovka carnage) by the end of August, Ukrainains weren't expecting that Russians move out in such quantities. Also while initially laughed at, the notion that T90's were employed found some echo after our "beloved Dagestani tanker" lumped about 20 pictures on vk around october 2014 that went right along the "Death Trek". There's nothing official about it, it's something we ironically dubbed Death Trek (Marche de la Mort) at the older Theatrum Belli forums.

That gets me back ever further, 8 years, summer holidays in Paros. Left my laptop reading digicam, Dana, Humvee, Cobra and M4 Carbine "Georgia strοnk" posts. Came back after after 8 hours of overnight partying and find the same thread filled with Team Homeless and Yamadaev's goons, chasing the Team gucci all the way to Tbilisi or looting Gori barracks and cretin-in-chief eating his tie on CNN. Had to sober up and go through the thread twice, just to be sure.

Not sure how you'd call that, shish kebab Trek probably.

That's what a russian guy called the Ossetian onlslaught @Theatrum Belli. Hobo Invasion. There were a couple of french people that posted in MP, specifically making TB inside jokes about spilled vomit camo (Partizanka) and gopnik shop cart (Zapad guys on captured BMP's). Wesh wesh (typical Paris Suburb lingo) Brother technique with pulled up socks and drugdealer sneakers. Those were aesome time, Novorossian Hobos brought their A game, but the Originals will always be the 58th and its 62's.

At some point this was posted by the SOP trolls.

It's interesting, that some of Novorussian T-72 tanks of "Diesel" battalion don't have big IR lights on the side of the gun. Maybe they modernize their night sights with at least 2nd gen II tubes, that they don't need IR lights for them. They also increase ERA protection on the tanks.
