There is radiation to contend with... and that will continue to kill... not just humans but any animals we might be able to live on.

We hear about these wonderful seed banks... but the critical thing about backup plans is that they need to be tested to make sure they work...

They also need to be accessable... there is no point in having the seeds and DNA of every plant and animal on the planet if it is up in the arctic circle and the safe places to plant are in the middle of Africa or South America... seeds on their own wont last long as a food source... you need fertile ground to plant the seed to grow more seed to eat and plant... a cycle big companies like Monsanto are trying to break with their frankenstein seed that does not produce plants that produce seed so every year you need to buy more seed from them...

“The successful completion of the Poseidon’s nuclear power plant tests has opened the way to conducting factory sea trials at sea. It’s planned to begin testing in favorable weather conditions this summer,” the agency’s source said.

He specified that "on the undercarriage" Poseidon "will be shot at sea from the coastal stand", since the construction of the regular carrier of the UAV - the nuclear submarine of the special purpose project 09851 Khabarovsk - continues on Sevmash.

If factory tests have yet to be conducted on the Poseidon UUV, it would be interesting to know what weapon developments were tested using the Sarov? I suppose the Poseidon is latest iteration of a "Status-6" type weapon and is the initial version that is fit for service.

Now they can put it all together and fully test it perhaps?

Absolutely nothing and they should develop one.

Question is what will they target with it?

Only "safe" bet is Vladivostok. Everything else is in close proximity to their allies. And I don't mean just some disposable trash they keep around but real allies like Germans, Swedes or Danes.

And it's still just couple of million of victims at best, Russia's population is not packed on the coastline unlike USA's.

This is nuclear weapon so best defense is certainty of retaliation towards which this weapon contributes.

And they didn't randomly decide to make it, USA pulled out of ABM treaty for a reason. Which means they are seriously considering first strike and they are trying to avoid retaliation. It may be a long shot but do you really want to risk it?

Americans may act like clowns but they are not stupid.

Also one important (and crucial) advantage Poseidon has over sea-launched ICBMs: Poseidon can be launched instantly.

In order to launch SLBM submarine needs to move at specific depth. This takes time and if it's detected by enemy SSN it can be destroyed before is launches missiles.

If you kill SSBN you are preventing nuclear strike.

However launching torpedoes is much faster. Reactors on Poseidon will always be running (as all reactors do) and the moment submarine detects enemy firing at them they would launch Poseidons at enemy coastline.

It's impossible for enemy to attack submarine armed with Poseidon without dooming their own population. And it acts as defense for it's carrier submarine. It no longer needs to have any defensive weaponry, these WMDs are it's defense.

Basically Poseidon is perfect second-strike weapon. It can't be used in first strike but it's impossible to stop it from carrying out second strike.

It will have 2MT warhead because that is one that is available off-the-shelf at the moment. It can get bigger one later but they would have to be custom made which is not a big deal but they will want to finish tests and complete production and deployment before they order larger warheads.

That is an interesting possibility indeed, and since the torpedo is faster than any other with exception of supercavitating ones (which NATO does not posses yet from what I know) it would be all but unstoppable. All needed would be to keep the torpedo always updated with target and carrier coordinates. Difficult problem to deal with, US will go for supercavitating torpedoes next I guess.

In any case the good thing here is that even putting all kind of ABM assets in the space as Trump wants will not solve the threat of Poseidon in any way, forcing US to invest even more in a completely different field if they want first strike capability against Russia.

The point is there is an aggressor and a defender... the US is the one wanting a first strike capability so they can win a nuke war and they think that will give them control and peace.

The Russians want to defend themselves and know the only way to ensure the US does not attack is if it knows it wont survive the response.

Poseidon is part of the argument that the US wont survive.

Having stealth bombers was an American invention because a bomber entering enemy airspace where radars and air defence systems are actually operating makes it a first strike weapon.

Poseidon is a retaliation weapon which has little value for the Americans... they will spend a lot to try to defend themselves from it, but I really don't see much value for them in developing their own versions, because it would not really be that effective as a first strike weapon...

A source in the defense-industrial complex told TASS earlier the unmanned underwater vehicles Poseidon would be provided for the Russian Navy under the current 2018-2027 program for armaments. They will be used to arm a new generation nuclear powered submarine being built at the Sevmash shipyards. At the moment Sevmash is building at least two special submarines: project 949A The Belgorod, expected to carry unmanned and manned deep diving research apparatuses and a special purpose submarine called The Khabarovsk. According to unconfirmed reports, this project 09851 submarine will be able to carry various deep diving vehicles and a new weapon system.

Another source told TASS the underwater tests of a nuclear power plant had confirmed the unmanned vehicle Poseidon would have an unlimited range and a maximum speed of more than 200 kilometers per hour.

Nice.

But it would make sense to fit them to roll on roll off ferries too... I could imagine a land base would encourage attacks on choke points out of the area so being able to load up large numbers of them in a ship and sailing off and dropping them into the water at night almost anywhere you like and have them go from there is interesting...

My guess: 3 versions.
Warhead 1 with a few hundred kilotons as carrier killer.
Warhead 2 with 2 megatons to destroy harbors/coastal installations.
Warhead 3 with a lot more than 2 megatons to destroy… the coast.

The warhead for the coast destroyer version should atleast have a 100 megaton warhead to ensure total destruction of enemy cities and blanket a huge area with deadly radiation for atleast 50+ years to get rid of all the remaining survivors.

2 megaton is largest standard warhead available off-the-shelf at the moment and it will be first one to get installed on this

Larger ones will need to be custom ordered but they won't be doing that until they fully test and introduce the whole system first
