The ISS returned to its original position without damage after the incident of the Russian Nauka module, by Victor Kulakov for Sputniknews France. 30.07.2021.
The International Space Station did not suffer any damage after the thrusters of the recently docked Nauka module accidentally started. The incident did not endanger the crew, Nasa reports.
Although the International Space Station (ISS) was moved 45 degrees from its position after the Nauka module's thrusters started working unexpectedly, it did not cause any damage, according to Nasa officials.
"We did not notice any damage," Joel Montalbano, director of the ISS program at the US space agency, told a press conference by phone.
He said the people on board did not feel any shaking.
"There was no immediate danger to the crew.»
Crew safe, station in good condition
Nasa confirmed on Thursday 29 July the words of Mr. Montalbano via Twitter.
"The crew members are safe and will revise their schedule for today to focus on recovery efforts following the unexpected loss of attitude caused by the start of the thrusters of the Russian Nauka module. The station has returned to its original position and is in good condition.»
The Nauka ("science" in Russian) module launched on July 21 by a Proton M rocket docked with the ISS on July 29 after eight days of flight.
Engines on to straighten the position
A few hours after docking, the module engines started accidentally. The ISS was moved from its normal position, which forced the cosmonauts to turn on the engines of the Russian segment of the station to compensate for the movement.
"The thrusters [from Nauka] began to work unexpectedly and inadvertently, moving the station 45 degrees from its position . The recovery operations put it back in its (original) position," Nasa explained.
Roscosmos' comments
The Russian space agency Roscosmos explained the accidental start of the thrusters by "work with the remaining fuel".
"The process of transitioning the Nauka module from the ISS-docked flight regime is underway. The work is conducted with the remaining fuel, " his press service commented to Sputnik.
Agency director Dmitry Rogozin was terse on Twitter:
"Everything is in good order on board the ISS. The crew is resting. I advise you to do the same".
