I'd find it hard to put a half decent force on a tiny useless lump of rocks. Its the fishing waters around kunashir that matter. So Why not just put 2-3 admiral gorshkov frigates patrolling around the island? Much more economical and still will make the japanese think twice.

As for tsushima and port arthur, almost enirely fault of stupid aristocratic admirals that cared more about their well being than the well being of their men. Hence the massive dissent of the armed forces afterb the war and attempt of revolution.

But for the sake of fareness the americans also had an ambush situation like port arthur and didnt react correctly to it: PEARL HARBOR

Japan seeks to solve Southern Kuril Islands dispute during Putin’s visit

"We would like to conclude a peace agreement and solve the territorial issue", former Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said

TOKYO, May 20. /TASS/. The Japanese leadership expects that President Vladimir Putin will visit Tokyo and hopes to solve the issue of the Southern Kuril Islands with Russia, former Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura has said.

"I want to switch to the political issue - we would like to conclude a peace agreement and solve the territorial issue, and therefore we would like President Putin to come to Japan," Komura said at the meeting with the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, Sergey Naryshkin, in Tokyo on Wednesday.

"Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is thinking about this very seriously," said Komura, who is the vice-president of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Earlier this week, Japan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Tokyo was planning to continue working on preparing for holding this year’s visit of the Russian president.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe informed US President Barack Obama about this at their latest meeting in April, according to the diplomats.

"At talks with President Obama in April Prime Minister Abe said that the coordination effort linked to the Russian president’s visit to Japan will continue," the ministry official told TASS. "He also said that Japan attaches great importance to the cooperation as part of the G7 and will make effort towards the peaceful solution to the issues linked to Ukraine," the diplomat said.

So now the Japanese want to talk and solve the issues of the Kuril Islands... last time there was communication Japan wasn't talking and was joining sanctions over the Ukraine.

Russia is developing its far east region... that was the only benefit of an agreement with Japan over the Kuril islands... that the Japanese would invest in development in the region... which had been neglected for some time.

I hardly think the Russians will just hand over ownership of the islands... they are a strategic entrance for the Russian Navy to its main naval areas... I rather doubt they will hand them over to Japan and let Japan let the US build listening posts and other secret bases there... this is not about fish.

Not just that, because the Kuril Islands as well as Sakhalin are Russian territory, which allowed the Russians to petition towards the UN to name the Sea of Okhotsk as undisputed Russian territorial waters 3 years ago in which the UN recognized, and just recently a consortium of Russian energy companies announced that there's at least $2 trillion worth of recoverable oil in the Sea of Okhotsk.

...It would be incredibly foolish now to sell the Kuril Islands to Japan, in which Japan will likely challenge the UN mandate and try to take a share of that petroleum pie!

"On Wednesday, Russia’s Armed Forces stepped up their combat in the area using the latest anti-missile system ‘Tor-M2U’ in the Kuril Islands, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
Prior to this, for the past six months the soldiers and officers used the air defense system in experimental mode. The Russian General Staff chose this particular weapon to protect the far eastern borders of Russia due to its combat capabilities. The Tor-M2U refers to a new generation of short-range air defense systems. Its main task is to cover the most important military and government facilities from attack from aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and enemy drones."

Japanese facilities and bases are easily within striking range from Vladivostok (mainland) with both cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. While Japan may have a force to be reckoned with, these days, Russian cruise missiles would be dropped so hard on Japanese facilities, airfields, navy bases, etc, that they would lose a ridiculous amount of manpower, equipment and what not in the first few days that at that point, taking the Kuril islands would have been pointless.

Very simply the problem is that Japan would not try to take the Kuriles by force because they know the Russians would actually react and try to stop them... and if they could not stop them, they would try to take them back.

In either situation the Japanese will lose rather more than they could ever possibly gain.

Even assuming the Russians ignored the Japanese attack they would likely not accept Japanese territorial claims to the seas around their ill gotten gains.

    A very strange article:

Two Possible Solutions for Russia-Japan Territorial Dispute Over Kuril Islands

Tokyo has long claimed all of the Kuril Islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Japanese nation appear to have gradually become open to a compromise regarding the territorial dispute with Russia that has plagued bilateral relations for decades, experts said.

    http://sputniknews.com/politics/20160903/1044924720/russia-japan-kurils-solution.html

In this article the belief is that Shinso Abe isn't a western stooge, based on the fact that Japan hasn't joined the western sanctions.
But that's not the strange part, it's the words of Vasily Kashin that really got me, he states that Japan wants to improve relations with Russia to counterbalance Moscow's relationship with Beijing, how a small island with a dwindling population and a semi-decent economy can serve as a counter balance to China is beyond me, also there's the odd statement that Russia "needs Japan's help in modernizing its (Russia's) economy", i think mister Kashin needs to check his calender and see what year it is.

It is all just words.  They will not say the truth in front of the Japanese when Abe is in Russia currently signing agreements on economic development.  Japan has nothing to offer Russia but pure investments, and this is what Russia wants.  Russia also wants to counter balance China's growth in the far eastern regions with other Asian countries investments so as China doesn't get any idea's in the future of territory up north.  Because then the Koreans, Japanese, Indian's and alike will be massively pissed off.

Putin also stated that the Kuril Islands are non-negotiable anyway.

That little wanker Abe really annoys me.

Japan hasn't got a single friend in Asia. Europe hates them too.(I worked at a Japanese company once, what arseholes!)
Their only "friend" is Uncle Sham. Because they're America's bitch.

I wish Putin or the Ru media would hammer the point home harder.
They don't need investment from these barbarians and monsters. Japan has always been a nasty, imperialist bully in its own area. Its also about the most "racist" country in the World.
All of its neighbours utterly DESPISE Japan.

Japan can have the Kurils (why? do they fuck puffins or something?) as soon as it hands back the 27 MILLION Russians it assisted in the genocide of during the Gr Patriotic War. Until then, they should realise its a good time to stfu.

Japan agreed on the Kurils situation in the 1950s. Now it regages on it. Who can trust these war criminal heinous liars anyway? Japan needs Russia. Not the other way round!

All of Japan's neighbours hate her ruling class. None are "allies".
Infact her only "ally" in the world is an occupying enemy who nuked 2 of her cities and tells her what to do.

Russia should tell Japan straight. Give us back the 40m RUssians you assisted Germany in the genocide of, in the Gr Patriotic War. ANd then we will give you a)a trillion gazillion dollars and b)the Kurils.

Until then, Japan should consider themselves having got off lightly for the atrocities they commited. Its a couple of shitty islands as far as Japan is concerned. For Russia, its a matter of national safety. Russia should not acquiesce to the bullying, imperialism and arrogance of Japan's elite. Or the AMerican elite thats agitating all this shit.

Here's something I didn't know. THe BBC in England did a programme on it.
Japan's big North Island, Hokkaido only recently even became Japanese. In around the 1860s it was inhabited by a completely different ethnic group, not part of Japan. They were mostly called the Ainu, and spoke a different language, had different culture even looked different to the Japanese. Anyway, the Japanese invade the Ainu's island and began to ban the language and culture. Just 5% of the Hokkaido today (it was a new Japanese name) are the original indigeneous inhabitants. With a few more, of mixed descent.

So not only are the Kurils NOT Japanese, the whole of Hokkaido isn't really Japanese either. Infact given that Russia's ethnic groups are generally happy, you could argue that the Ainu would have been better off under Russia. Infact, Japan invaded modern day Hokaido partly because they thought it would join Russia. It also invaded Hokaido because Japan has a history of bloody imperialism.

So it all kind of fucks up Japan's claim to the Kurils...!

Return to 1956 declaration implies no transfer of Russian territories to Japan - Peskov

According to the Kremlin spokesman the sides will reach a compromise that will not run counter to their interests

MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. The return to the 1956 Joint Declaration in the Russia-Japan peace treaty talks in no way implies an automatic transfer of Russian territories to the Japanese side, Russian president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.

"Over these days we have heard a great variety of different speculations, political guesses about some sort of a separate deal on the transfer of the islands and so on. This is not true and cannot be true," he told the Moscow. Kremlin. Putin program of the Rossiya-1 television channel, commenting on the Russian-Japanese agreement to continue the peace treaty talks on the basis of the 1956 declaration.

    Read also
Putin: Negotiations with Japan on peace treaty require deep analysis

"Can we say that it means automatic transference of any territories? Absolutely no. This is what President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin was saying when he answered journalists’ question," Peskov said.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, the sides will reach a compromise that will not run counter to their interests. "Naturally, a compromise will be needed. We can say it already now that this compromise will not be in conflict with the national interests of either of the sides," he said. "Obviously, having such a vast experience, Russia cannot ignore Japan’s allied relations with other countries, first of all, with the United States. It is taken into account during the talks and this matter will need a solution."

"Despite the complexity of the topic of the peace treaty with Japan, this problem can be settled. Such difficult problems are solvable all the same, and the experience of territorial talks with China is a good example of that," Peskov stressed.

After Putin’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Singapore, Peskov told journalists that the two leaders had agreed to intensify the peace treaty talks on the basis on the 1956 declaration.

Since the mid-20th century, Russia and Japan have been negotiating a peace treaty after World War II. The main stumbling block to this is the issue of the ownership of the southern Kuril Islands. After the end of World War II, all Kuril Islands were incorporated into the Soviet Union. However, Japan challenged the ownership of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan islands and a number of uninhibited islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge called the Habomai Islands in Japan.

In 1956, the Soviet Union and Japan signed a joint declaration on ceasing the state of war. The two countries resumed diplomatic and other relations, however no peace treaty has been signed until now. The Soviet Union committed to paper in the declaration its readiness to hand over Shikotan, Habomai and a number of uninhibited small islands to Japan as a gesture of good will after the peace treaty is ultimately signed.

However following Japan’s signing a security treaty with the United States in 1060, the former Soviet Union revoked its liabilities concerning the transference of islands. The Soviet government said back then that the islands would be handed over to Japan only when all foreign forces were withdrawn from its territory.

I don't personally have a problem with a return to the 1855 border if it is part of a comprehensive peace and trade accord, including Japan's recognition of all other Russian territorial claims (including Crimea), favorable trade conditions for Russia (including potential Sakhalinsk-Hokkaido pipeline), massive Japanese payments for the relocation of those islands' populations, etc.

Trust me, never concede to screeching hyper-victims. Shinzo Abe doesn't even recognize that the Imperial Japanese committed any atrocities during WW2 (that includes the Nanking Massacre), he believes the Japanese were the victims not the perpetrators. What's even crazier is that his historical revisionism of Imperial Japanese victimhood  is being used (by the neocons) to antagonize war with China.

Believe me you can't rationalize with the mentally ill, nevermind offering them concessions.
