Some further info on the Forpost-R...sounds like a decent system, they've extended the max range by 100km and it will be able to be equipped with various payloads (OE, EW and Radar) and they're planning to eventually arm it with 2 small guided bombs

UAVS etc
the Russians can build anything … their weakness is powerplants
so what powerplant is in this Forpost ?
and yes the small powerplant issue relates to USSR and small engines being based in Eastern EU …
but in the next 3-5 years …. powerplants will not be an issue after that … watch this space
given the enormity of Russia's borders UAVS are a no-brainer ...

7 ton VTOL drone
that sounds like the Fregat …. my favourite "weird" aircraft …..
thing is …. what will be its powerplant ..
7000 kgs no pilot ….
Ka-52 …. 2 crew …. max takeoff 11000kg
sounds like 1x engine from Ka-52 = VK-2500 x1
why not ? ….. no crew
or maybe 2x VK800.....
but looking at the Fregat design you'd surely be going electric pod powerplants ? re rotating engine fan pods .. to avoid shaft drives etc
at least …. that's what I'd be doing …
ie have a fuselage mounted gas turbine electric generator ….. and electric pod engines … 1x VK-2500 makes sense to me
interesting bit - they have funds to make a 2000kg prototype . following recent small model flight success
sounds like 1x VK800 ?
whatever it is … it has to be a lightweight engine …. says gas turbine to me
anyway ….. interesting - as always
looking forward to photos from MAKS

The original powerplant for thr IAF Searcher is the german Limbach L550E aircraft engine, a 50 hp (37 kW) gasoline engine.
I do not know if the russians localised the production of this engine, or if they already developed their own.

I would expect they would go for a diesel if they could for fuel endurance and economy.

Re: UAVs in Russian Armed Forces: News
Does the 85 in its designation mean 85 hp?
I would have thought in an engine weight that size it would be more efficient to use a diesel... guess they didn't have a suitable model available, or I am wrong and a petrol model is better.

There isn't anything publicly available on the specific engine (must be pretty new). However it's likely made by JSC "Ägat" which makes a range of smaller piston engines for light aviation and UAV's which have the designations APD-110/120, APD-500 and so on....these sort of engines were until recently not produced in post-Soviet Russia
Report from 2015 with a few pics of different engines
https://missiles2go.ru/2015/12/04/rotax-ru/
They also have a diesel engine in their range, the AGAT-D / APD-250/300 (pic below)...so it's possible that the APD-85 is diesel...I just don't know atm

Hey, thanks for that... those links led me to this website: http://gmzagat.ru/
In the shop link there are motors there that seem rather cheap to me...
for instance, this 6.5hp motor is 7,300 roubles... which works out at roughly $180 NZ...

MAKS-2019: three promising UAVs of Kronstadt JSC
The Kronstadt group will show a full-scale UAV model weighing 5000 kg and with a payload of 1000 kg during the MAKS-2019 International Aviation and Space Salon. The expected duration of the UAV flight at maximum load will be 40 hours. The Group will also present other promising developments in the unmanned sphere, the company's press service reports.
Guests of the air show will see a multi-purpose long-range unmanned aerial vehicle based on the Orion-E air reconnaissance complex (CWR) - the first Russian CWR with an unmanned aerial vehicle corresponding to the international classification MALE class - this is a class of medium-altitude long-range vehicles. It is assumed that the UAV will be able to be in the sky for at least 24 hours.
The Kronstadt Group will also demonstrate a model of the Fregat non-aerodrome-based aircraft, a high-speed vertical take-off and landing UAV, designed to carry out aviation operations in the Arctic and the Far East. The design of the "Frigate" will allow its use on minimally prepared landing sites and significantly reduce the cost of ground-based infrastructure.
In addition, the company's specialists will talk about composite technologies used in their own production, about new developments in the field of on-board electronics and avionics, control and communication systems, as well as target loads for unmanned vehicles.

It has the same characteristics, the same company, so yes, if they didn't change the name it's Orion-2, that Jane talked about.

He Is right, they changed the name...
UAV Sirius is an initiatively created unmanned aircraft with a take-off mass of 5 tons with a wingspan of 30 m, capable of being in the air for up to 40 hours. UAV "Sirius" is developed taking into account its certification as an unmanned aerial vehicle and is designed to solve a wide range of tasks of civil aviation. The large carrying capacity (1 ton) allows carrying combined target loads, which will ensure high information content of air monitoring data. The presence of a satellite control channel and data transmission makes the radius of use of the device limited only by the fuel supply. The flight range of UAV Sirius exceeds 10,000 km, which will allow it to be used to deliver emergency cargo over long distances. The device can also be used for the tasks of relaying radio signals, monitoring weather and climate,

Re: UAVs in Russian Armed Forces: News
A previously unknown heavy drone was shown at MAX-2019.
The Kronstadt group of companies presented at the opening International Air Show MAKS-2019 a line of its drones, including the Orion-E reconnaissance UAV, intended for export. This is stated on the company's website.
According to the press service, the company presented three promising developments at its exhibition booth: the Orion-E multi-purpose UAV of a long duration, the Fregat non-aerodrome based mock-up, and the Sirius full-size unmanned aerial vehicle.
Export-made Orion-E UAVs are positioned in the company as the first Russian airborne reconnaissance complex with a long-duration UAV that meets the international classification MALE class (medium-high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles of long flight duration). Earlier, Military Review wrote about him as a promising fire-fighting UAV. You can read more. going to the news :
The second Frigate UAV presented by the company is a vertical take-off and landing drone using rotary screws and is designed to operate in arctic conditions and in the Far East. It is claimed that the UAV was created specifically for off-air base, which will provide it with take-off and landing "in helicopter" and has a high flight speed "in aircraft", which reaches 500 km / h. It has a long range.
The third drone presented by the company - UAV Sirius - in the form of a full-size layout. It is stated that the weight of the UAV reaches 5 tons, which classifies it in the heavy class. At the same time, its payload is 1 ton. The drone can be in the air for up to 40 hours.

Recall that the Kronstadt group of companies does not have a license to produce military drones. Therefore, all products of the company are positioned as civilian.

They're 'civilian drones', moreover one of them looks like a licensed produced versions of a Chinese drone that I have seen.

If kronsdat group don't have a military license, how could Orion-e tested bombs?
The modified Orion-E has a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 1,000 kg and can carry a maximum payload of 200 kg, including four 50-kg aerial bombs. "In the baseline configuration, the UAV carries one 50-kg guided bomb unit," the source said. It should be mentioned that Kronstadt has developed its own guided bomb unit for the Orion-E in order to maximize the combat performance of the vehicle.

The ones shown at MAKS are civilian...but I'd be surprised if they don't have military versions

About Sirius
ZHUKOVSKY (Moscow region), Aug 27 - RIA Novosti. The first prototype of the Russian heavy UAV Sirius will be ready by 2023, Nikolai Dolzhenkov, the general designer of the enterprise developing the UAV, the Kronstadt group, told RIA Novosti.
A full-size mock-up of a five-ton drone with a payload per ton was first shown at the MAKS-2019 air show. Previously, this device was presented as a promising five-ton drone without a specific name.
“There is confidence that we can take on most of the costs of this program. I think that we can get the first prototype by 2023. If we fail to find any strategic investor, we will do this work ourselves, and if we find, then we will complete it faster, "Dolzhenkov said.

So MOD didn't show interest yet.

Flying prototype of Russia’s Orion-2 drone to be ready in four years
The official described the future UAV as a "monitoring drone to observe vast areas for a long period of time in the optical, infra-red and radar bands"
ZHUKOVSKY /Moscow Region/, August 29. /TASS/. It will take at least four years to build a flying prototype of the Orion-2 (production name Sirius) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the chief designer of Kronshtadt Group, Nikolai Dolzhenkov, has told TASS.
"It will take at least four years to transform this into a flying prototype," Dolzhenkov said.
The official described the future UAV as a "monitoring drone to observe vast areas for a long period of time in the optical, infra-red and radar bands."

So far, the company is running this project on its own initiative, but the Russian Natural Resources and Environment Ministry and the Emergency Situations Ministry may find the prospective aircraft useful in the future, Dolzhenkov suggested.
Along with other projects, St. Petersburg-based Kronshtadt Group is designing long-endurance and off-aerodrome UAVs and on-board equipment.
One of its projects is the Orion aerial reconnaissance system - an unmanned aerial vehicle with a maximum takeoff weight of 1 ton, and maximum payload of 200 kg. Its ceiling is 7.5 km; maximum flight endurance with a standard load is 24 hours, and a horizontal flight speed is 200 km/h.

Defense Ministry may receive one Orion unmanned complex in 2019
Kronstadt Group General Designer Nikolai Dolzhenkov noted that the timing of the start of serial production of a drone will depend on the decision of the defense department
ZHUKOVSKY / Moscow Region /, August 29. / TASS /. The Orion drone is in the final stages of testing. The RF Ministry of Defense may receive one such complex before the end of the year, Nikolay Dolzhenkov, general designer of the Kronstadt group, said on Thursday to TASS.
"We are at the final stage of testing under the contract, which is being implemented with the Ministry of Defense. We plan to put the initial first complex in the near future, perhaps even this year," Dolzenkov said.
At the same time, the general designer specified that the timing of the start of serial production of the drone will depend on the decision of the Ministry of Defense.

From what I can understand, kronsdat group don't have the military export license, to Russian mod is ok.
