The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, is scheduled to take place from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi[1], Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. Ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports will be held. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOOC).

Sochi was selected as the host city on 4 July 2007 during the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City, defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria; and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Sochi Olympics are the first Winter Olympics (and first Olympics altogether) for the Russian Federation, as the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were in the Soviet Union.

Construction in preparation for the Games involves the building of new venues; and modernizing the telecommunications, power, and transport infrastructure of the area. This will include the construction of a new Olympic Park by the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley, with venues clustered around a central area. The venues in Krasnaya Polyana will also be new.

The Olympic Games in Sochi will be holding events in 15 disciplines of 7 winter sports:

    • Biathlon

    • Bobsleigh: Bobsleigh and Skeleton

    • Curling

    • Ice Hockey

    • Luge

    • Skating: Figure Skating, Short Track Speed Skating and Speed Skating

    • Skiing: Alpine, Cross Country, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Freestyle and Snowboard

Events at 2014 Sochi Games to start day earlier

LONDON (AP) -- The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, will get off to an early start - a day early.

For the first time at a winter games, competition will begin a day before the opening ceremony.

Qualifying events in figure skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding will take place on Feb. 6, 2014, to give organizers "breathing space," IOC sports director Christophe Dubi told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The opening ceremony is on Feb. 7, with the games running until Feb. 23. That means the actual period of the games will cover 18 days rather than the standard 17.

The Sochi Games will feature 98 medal events, 12 more than the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Dubi said qualifying will be held Feb. 6 in the men's and pairs short program in figure skating, women's moguls in freestyle and men's snowboard slopestyle.

The move builds contingency into the packed sports schedule and makes it possible for more athletes to attend the opening ceremony the next day, when no competitions will be held, Dubi said. The first medal events will be on Feb. 8.

Competitions have been scheduled on the day of the opening ceremony at previous winter games, but this will be the first time events will be held a day before, Dubi said.

Events at the much bigger summer games usually start a few days before the opening ceremony. The women's football tournament kicked off with two games Wednesday, two days before the official opening of the London Olympics.

Among the new events approved by the IOC last year for Sochi are women's ski jumping, men's and women's slopestyle, men's and women's ski halfpipe, mixed relay in biathlon and team events in luge and figure skating.

Russia’s Olympic University: a 'sports Harvard'

On July 30, Russia’s delegation in London presented the country’s new International Olympic University for sports executives in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi.

On the same day, the University signed exchange deals with two top British schools - the Universities of Sheffield and Brunel.

Russia’s government signed a decree supporting an idea to create a college for sports managers in 2009. The University was established by the National Olympic Committee, the Sochi 2014 organizing committee and Interros private investment company engaged in the construction of Sochi sports facilities.

The Sochi Games were the main reason for the University but not the only one, says the head of the Interros, tycoon Vladimir Potanin.

"We thought of a new university as a “sports Harvard” as it has not that many competitors. There exist some international colleges which cooperate with the IOC and we signed an agreement with two of them today. However, this sphere is not that packed so we hope to lead it."

Tuition will be expensive indeed – one mln roubles a year (some 30,000 dollars). But it’s worth it, as professors will be top sports and business figures. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin pledged to allocate 20 scholarships to attract the first students.

The University will open its doors in 2013 when its building and campus are ready. Academia will also be recruited by that time, says Vladimir Potanin.

"We’ll have some permanent staff and guest professors or sport celebrities to cover specific themes. Thus, Rene Fasel, the IHF President already worked as a lecturer and delivered lectures in Russia. We are oriented at CEOs, executives, like managers of the leading football or basketball clubs, event managers, for example Olympic organizers. We are offering top-notch education ad super professional staff."

Half of the staff will be hired from abroad and 50% will be Russians. The same is applied to students though things can change, the University management says.

Air Recon System to Secure Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi

To maintain security of Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi, Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs will order an air reconnaissance system equipped with unmanned helicopters, reports Interfax referring to Dmitry Sadovy, chief engineer for unmanned systems at the ministry's aircraft center.

According to Sadovy, in 2013 Russian Ministry of Interior Affairs will purchase several systems of this kind; each of them consists of two unmanned helicopters Horizon Air S-100 and a ground-based (or ship-based) control post.

Helicopters Horizon Air S-100 made by JSC Horizon (Rostov, Russia) jointly with Austrian company Schiebel can be operated in any weather conditions, day and night, on land and at sea. Takeoff weight of the vehicle is 34 kg; operating radius is up to 200 km; endurance is up to 10 hours.

As was earlier reported, Federal Security Service (FSB) will use new surveillance and reporting systems Plastun to secure the coming Olympics in Sochi; those systems are supposed to patrol and detect suspicious objects. In addition, a special air defense group will be formed in Sochi by 2014.

    Main problem is perceptions.

Perception that it will be gigantically expensive for tourists.
Perception that the flights are (extremely) terrible. (Even that the airlines are rubbish).
Perception that getting a visa from Europe or the US etc is a massive amt of hassle.
Perception that Russia burns pillowbiters at stakes.

Its a shame the EU and Russia cant get the mutual visa thing sorted. I mean some complete banana republics citizens dont even need a visa for Russia.

However, overall I think any negative perceptions about Russia/Sochi are completely wrong.
I also think it will be the best Winter Olympics ever.

    Bang on target Firebird..
Putin knows about this , Thats why he has made the public announcement of abysmal low turnout in Sochi 2014.

This is what happens when you have 40% of planet landmass and just 1 % of world population. That too disproportionately skewed towards
    old age people.

I hope new surveillance drones being churned out by Russian companies prevent any terror attacks on empty stadiums.. Shocked

The armed forces of the RUSSIAN FEDERATION submitted 18 antiaircraft-missile complexes, pantsir-s1. They will provide security for the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

ZRPK is now located in Adler and Sochi. Following the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi complexes will be redeployed to other areas of the country.

Ooh god, few weeks before Sochi starts up and the U.S press is going all out on there fear mongering, granted there is a possible security risk, at one point they make it sound like there was an soviet iron curtain around Sochi not to protect the guest and players, but to separate the "real" sochi from the Olympic Sochi and they make the security checkpoints in Sochi sound like the ones in Palistine.

And of course doing whatever it takes to make this PUTIN'S Olympics.

Sadly couldn't find the vid i was looking for, but these will have to do:

2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Games Empty Putins Showdown With Terror.

Post  Flyingdutchman Fri Jan 24, 2014 9:27 pm

Russian President Vladimir Putin is augmenting security for the upcoming Winter Olympics in southern Russia in the hope of preventing possible Islamic terrorist attacks at the international sporting event.
Putin tried to reassure Russian media that visitors will be safe at the Olympics that will take place from Feb. 6 through Feb. 23 in Sochi in the Caucusus mountains in the region of Krasnodar Krai on the Black Sea, not too far from Russia’s land border with Georgia. Islamists have already threatened to attack the games and authorities are searching for potential suicide bomber Ruzanna Ibragimova, the 22-year-old widow of a jihadist killed by Russian security forces who may have traveled from Dagestan to Sochi. Last week three security officers and four militants who may have been planning attacks on the Olympics were killed in a gunfight.

Parts of Russia are reportedly turning into armed camps as authorities crack down on protests and perceived anti-government activities in the sprawling nation with a significant Muslim minority.
About 40,000 members of Russia’s police and security forces will patrol the events, he said, and elite Spetsnaz fighters will be guarding against violent Muslim separatists.
“We will try to make certain that the security measures are not intrusive or too conspicuous, so they are not too noticeable for the athletes, the Olympics’ guests or journalists,” Putin said. “But at the same time, we will do our utmost to ensure that they are effective.”
Russian authorities have created a large security zone around Sochi, deployed thousands of extra police and troops, and are spending billions of dollars to keep the games safe. Submarines are patrolling the Black Sea coast while drones keep an eye on the host city from above. S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems are in place, capable of blowing hijacked aircraft out of the sky.
Sochi may as well have a giant bulls-eye painted over it. It stretches more than 60 miles and the Olympic Stadium, media complex, and ice hockey, speed skating, and figure skating facilities are located on the coast. A 44-mile express train route runs from the shore through the mountains to one of the two Olympic Villages, ski runs, and luxury hotels, generating headaches for security experts.
Critics are worried that Putin can’t guarantee security for athletes and tourists in the wake of last month’s Islamist bomb attacks in Volgograd that left more than 30 dead. The U.S. Department of State warns that Americans planning to visit Sochi should be vigilant about security because of potential terrorist threats, crime, and unreliable medical care.
Although former CIA Director Michael Hayden said he’s confident in Putin’s ability to provide the needed security, some American politicians aren’t convinced aren’t convinced that Putin is shooting straight.
After the FBI announced this month they would be deploy special agents to Sochi to assist the Russians in counterterrorism activities, House Intelligence Committee chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), called on Putin’s government to be more cooperative in sharing intelligence with the United States before the games begin.

“Their level of concern is great, but we don’t seem to be getting all of the information we need to protect our athletes in the games,” said Rogers. “I think this needs to change, and it should change soon,” he told CNN.
Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he didn’t plan to attend the games himself – “and I don’t think I would send my family,” King told CNN.
“It’s a very serious fear because the Olympics are being held in an area where there’s a history of terrorist activity, where there’s been a lot of tension between Islamists in that area and the government of Russia,” King said.
Hosting the Olympics in Sochi is fraught with risk, according to Der Spiegel.
“For years, tensions have been brewing in the region east of the Black Sea city. Riots continuously erupt between Russians and Caucasians. The federal subjects of Kabardino-Balkaria, Chechnya and Dagestan — only some 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Sochi — are active operational zones for Islamist terrorists. In the past year, 33 attacks shook the North Caucasus. Since October alone, 139 people have been killed by terrorists. Back in September at a meeting of the Security Council of Russia, Putin called for the mobilization of all forces to ensure the safety of the Winter Games.”
Dagestan was in the news in the U.S. last year because it has a connection to terrorism stateside. The late Boston Marathon bombing mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev frequented a radical mosque in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, during a six-month visit to that politically unstable, jihadist-friendly Russian republic. The mosque is reportedly a terrorist hangout.
Three years ago Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) warned the U.S. government about Tsarnaev, saying he could be an Islamic terrorist, but those admonitions went unheeded in Washington, D.C.
The clueless bunglers at Obama’s Department of Homeland Security haven’t stopped much of anything in recent years. When a terrorist attack has been foiled, it has been stopped because the plot was uncovered inadvertently (e.g. Faisal Shahzad) or because by-standers took action (e.g. “underwear bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab).
And if Putin’s forces learn of legitimate terrorist threats related to Sochi, unlike his American counterpart he won’t be handicapped by politically correct rules drafted to prevent minority groups from being inconvenienced.

Why the heck should russia allow FBI agents in russia anway, not part of teir buisness, they only piss always on the wrong leg, i m very suprised with the patience of russian duma when it comes to western propaganda, interference into economical and interior affairs. That still there was no big reaction to punish US on economical level.
It's not that USA has nothing to import from russia, like the biggest import of various of metals from the biggest supplier of all kinds of metals, gems and precious metals which is Russia and even oil, even that they have 2nd and 3rd suppliers for oil it still sends a message.

2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Games Empty Boston Marathon Bombers

Post  calripson Sun Jan 26, 2014 1:37 am

The perfect example is the Boston Marathon bombers. The government and press lied to the American public. The two bombers were well known to the US government and in all probability were working for US intelligence as a conduit to rebels in Russia. Their famous telegenic Uncle Ruslan just happens to be married to the daughter of a high ranking CIA official who previously worked with Muslim groups. Their academic advisor just happens to have worked extensively for the CIA "researching" different issues in Eurasia. The FBI pretended that the had no idea who the images on the still photos were when of course they knew immediately who they were. That was according to Israeli website Debka. But, it's pretty difficult to explain to even brain dead Americans why your CIA/FBI assets just went off the reservation and killed a little girl by blowing her legs off. Zbigniew's line about terrorism is a tactic not an ideology wouldn't quite cut it in Peoria.

The more they can halt Russia economy ,and damage its image , the less submarines they can buy

This is what you start to do when you read only neoliberal western media:
    "
My daily deep thought on things relates to the official song of Russia on the Olympics-- the silly song of the duo Tatu -- “You’re not gonna get us.” I am a sort of Tatu fan, although nowadays they sound pretty démodé. However, despite my musical preferences, I can’t stop wandering why on earth an Olympic host would choose a song with such a tasteless refrain--- You’re not gonna get us! (Нас недогонят)??
I mean, it doesn’t show much hospitality, does it? Nor it displays humility, typical of the Olympic spirit. What it shows is a boisterous and baseless bragging about, well, I don’t know about what. Because Russia these days doesn’t have much to brag about, except, of course, corruption and being backward. And, of course, in this respect it has very little competition. That’s why, I find it quite pathetic to announce yourself with this song. If I were a Russian athlete, I would have been embarrassed."
