Japan vs USSR war 1990 [hypothetical scenario] - Page 2 Empty Harpoon missile

    Post  nastle77 Wed Jan 04, 2017 6:30 pm

When the harpoon missile became widespread in the 80s it must have been a huge threat for soviet navy
What tactics and weapons did it rely on to defeat them and judging by evidence availAble how successful they would have been?
Which soviet naval SAMs can counter harpoon with realistic chances of success ?
The larger soviet ships had several gating guns did they constitute a credible defence ?
Did Soviets have a capability to use ECM against harpoon as it was a active radar homing weapon ?

The defences of Soviet navy vessels were optimised to defeat their own wide range of anti ship weapons... so the only virtue of the Harpoon was its numbers and I honestly don't think in this case it would have been that decisive as they had a lot of engagement channels to defeat enemy air threats.

But didn't the harpoon proved invulnerable to all soviet SAM and CIWS?

Hahahahahaha... where did that crap come from?

Harpoons have sunk some Iraqi Osa corvettes, an Iranian frigate made by the British, other than that it has a very patchy record.

Most Soviet CIWSs and SAMs were optimised for intercepting Soviet anti ship missiles... ie faster and much more capable threats...

Of course on paper the British should have been safe from exocets in the early 1980s as they have Exocet missiles in their own inventory... but sometimes they do get through.

Japan vs USSR war 1990 [hypothetical scenario] - Page 2 Empty Japanese self-defense Force

How do the 2 compare in 1980s era

    Soviet SAG
    1 Kiev 8 x SSN-12 sandbox
    2 Kyndas 8 x SSN-3 b Shaddock
    2 Sovermenyy 8 x SSN-22
2 Udaloy no SSM but extensive SAM
supported by 4 SSN like Victor III or Charlie I/II with type 76 longe range ASUW torpedoes or SSN-7/9

    vs

4 Hatsuyuki class DD + 3 Asagiri class destroyers
    each with 8 x Harpoon
    with ASROC

supposing neither side has any decisive air support

IMHO these are the pros and cons of each side

    Jap
    Modern ASM like Harpoon
good anti-missile defences like CIWS and sea sparrow

    Soviet
    mixed type of ASM
Longer ranged high speed ASM like P-500 bazalt and SSN-22 are advanced and former is long range
SSN-7/9 can be fired by submerged submarines out of range of DD ASROC
long range SSN-3b is primitive system and kyndas are not well protected with CIWS and SAM

what do you guys think ? which one will win
