A name which could go back 2 millenniums, for all we know, as that's about the time that China first expanded to what's today known as Xinjiang

A bit hard for an American to wrap their mind around I know, that someone's idea of 'new territory' could still refer to land that's been part of their state for several times longer than your entire nation's history
