Re: Su-34 Tactical Bomber: News
Painting the cockpit black just makes it darker and harder to see buttons and displays... think of trying to read text where the text is white and the background is black.

Re: Su-34 Tactical Bomber: News
Nice find Medo, another pic:
I was reading in an older article that a special reconnaissance version of Su-34 will replace Su-24MR, so probably this is the pod for Su-34R.

Re: Su-34 Tactical Bomber: News
It's called "Sich" and apparently back in 2011, 8 were ordered for tests on the Su-34. They come in 3 versions:
- Radar
- Radio/Signals
- Opto-Electronic
A few screenshots from an older video during production

It's damaged, but not destroyed, so it could be repaired.

Re: Su-34 Tactical Bomber: News
Nothing catastrophic. They will replace tires, fins, nose section and damaged parts behind cockpit and it will fly again. It seems the tires didn't make it, when the plane run off the runway.

Status of that radar set looks awful.. hope it can be restored.
Anyway looking at the "golden" portion of that radar set.. It seems like the V-004 Antenna.

Re: Su-34 Tactical Bomber: News
Some very good footage in these videos
We can see footage of the radar and some of the electronic optical systems.
Here we see a computer monitor displaying footage from a electro-optic system from what aircraft I do not know, however it appears to be from datalink as well as radio from the aircraft.
The most curious thing is the latter part showing footage from an aircraft moving away from the target area, the paneling is consistent with that of a Su-34(blue interior etc)
But the Platan system cannot point backwards, targeting pod maybe? Sapsan? The Pak-Fa pod?

Cool footage.
Just love the footage where the Su-34 hangs above the ground and fires its gun and then a ASM missile. Best testing video of weapons i've seen on any jet.

I love the Su-34, I honestly feel like the PAK-Sha should be heavily based off the Su-34, with heavy IR camouflage.

Re: Su-34 Tactical Bomber: News
Here we see a computer monitor displaying footage from a electro-optic system from what aircraft I do not know, however it appears to be from datalink as well as radio from the aircraft.
I suspect a buddy aircraft is monitoring a target while another attacks it and this is the video from the buddy aircraft.
With regard to the Kh-59 and Kh-59M (ie AS-13 and AS-18) there is a datalink pod that transmits the optical view of the target from the missile during the attack, but this is not that because the optical view should be from the missile attacking the target and therefore should show an optical view of actually flying into the target.
Both these weapons require the launch aircraft to monitor its view of the target area and to select the target by moving the crosshair onto the target in real time to select the target. Once selected the launch aircraft is free to do other things and is not required to fly towards the target as the datalink is not directional and once the missile has its lock on the target it needs no further information or communication with the launch platform.
The missile in the second video looks like a Kh-31 so I suspect the target wasn't laser targeted... the most sensible description of the video if the clips are related and not just montaged together, would be that this was two MiG-35s practising hitting a target where one MiG fires an anti radiation missile at an emitting ground target and the other MiG-35 which is filming the launching MiG-35 is also using its lower EO system to film the ground target as they fly over it and the munition hits...
It could equally be older model MiGs with a targeting pod fitted facing backwards to track targets behind the aircraft.
In this case however it is Su-34s and as far as I know Platan has some ability to look backwards as it has a small window in the part of the optical port that lowers down that can face backwards.
Of course it could just as easily be a SAPSAN pod facing backwards on a wing on the aircraft filming the attack.

Just about everything that's available....I think the Su-34 is currently the only one certified for satelite guided bombs
