Russian missile troops can not find a replacement Belarusian wheels

In Russia took another fourth consecutive successful launch of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) ground-based MS-26 "Frontier". Although reports of this event does not clarify what wheelbase uses the new complex, we can confidently assert that this Ming chassis. Other options Russians today is not there.

It is the lack of appropriate design and technological potential of the Russian defense industry can not completely abandon the service of the Belarusian defense industry, while the ambitious attempts of this kind for some areas take place.

Recall that the first test launch of the RS-26, manufactured by September 28, 2011 from Plesetsk, proved unsuccessful. Rocket at the exit of the transport and launch container touched him, and fell eight kilometers from the starting point. All subsequent launches were held in May and October 2012, October 2013 and, finally, on March 18 of this year (last run made from Kapustin Yar in the Astrakhan region on range Sary Shagan in Kazakhstan), considered a success.

In the near future leadership of the Ministry of Defense of Russia shall issue a decision on the adoption of the RS-26 into service. According to statements by the Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) Colonel-General Sergei Karakaeva, the deployment of the new ICBM will be launched next year.

As can be seen from the publications in the media, missile RS-26, also known as the "Vanguard" and "abroad", created using design solutions used in creating mobile missile system (PGRK) RS-24 "yars" and "Topol-M ". And in the future the new complex should replace them.

Talking about the technical characteristics of the RS-26, experts attribute it to complexes with small-sized MDBs having two or three steps. They most likely, a new type of solid fuel, accelerating passage of the active portion of path. According to estimations of experts, the minimum launch range ICBM is about 2000 km, maximum - more than 6000 km.

"Frontier" virtually immune to missiles, since it has a speed unattainable for them in their boost phase and endowed with "an intelligent maneuver" to avoid at the same time from 35 interceptor missiles. Additional invulnerability makes this PGRK placement on a mobile launcher.

According to available information, the missile warheads of this complex have their own engines and after separation from the carrier can maneuver in unpredictable flight path at supersonic speed. A variation of this type of missile warheads are already equipped with tactical complex "Iskander-M".

The new missile to be smaller in size and lighter "Yarsa". It is assumed that the weight of the loaded mobile launcher of the new complex will be 80 tons compared to 120 tons of its predecessor.

According to Russian military analysts, decision PGRK "Frontier" for service and start its mass production will quickly eliminate the current gap between Russia and the US in the number of deployed delivery vehicles and warheads. As a result, Moscow will be able to derive quantitative measures of nuclear weapons and their means of delivery to the maximum level allowed by the terms of the START-3.

In addition, the new missile system should enhance the combat potential of the Strategic Missile Forces plan to overcome missile defense. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees the government Russian military-industrial complex, called the RS-26 "killer missile defense," meaning that any existing or prospective missile defense system is unable to intercept the missile of this complex.

Serial production of ICBMs for PGRK "Frontier" to be deployed at the Votkinsk Machine Building Plant. Equipment for launchers supposed to be doing at the Volgograd plant "Barricades". But with respect to the manufacturer wheeled chassis for them until recently, experts had doubts.

The fact is that the traditional supplier of machines for ground missile Soviet Union and then Russia is Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant (MZKT). However, over the past one and a half or two years in the Russian press has passed a series of publications about the Russian Defense Ministry plans to abandon the use of Belarusian chassis as carriers of new PGRK.

They allegedly planned to be placed on the chassis of the family "platform" development of the Kama Automobile Plant. Later, it was reported, the car of the family entered service of all kinds and types of troops and MZKT will lose the majority of Russian military orders.

Some representatives of the expert community, this information was taken seriously. Others viewed it as an information box stuffing, which aims - to force Minsk to Moscow with the terms of a joint venture on the basis MZKT (by the way, Alexander Lukashenko, has recently made it clear that he intends to keep the plant owned by the Belarusian state).

Skeptics pointed out that in order to Russian army moved to another wheelbase will require huge investment of time and money on the production of not only the vehicles, but also all placed on the chassis MZKT superstructures and weapons. And the entire infrastructure that provides strategic PGRK functioning, adapted from Minsk wheeled chassis.

However, the main argument in favor of MZKT - a lack of Russian manufacturers design and technology and production capacity to develop and establish serial production vehicles in its class. That, in fact, confirmed by subsequent developments. KAMAZ-7850, which was supposed to create the program "Platform" in 2014, and has not appeared.

Meanwhile, the chassis MZKT-79291 (12x12) with a capacity of 650 hp for stand-alone launcher MS-26 Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology (MIT) - the developer of the Soviet and Russian PGRK - was on hand as TEHPROEKT in 2008. A July 3, 2013 the new chassis was first presented at the parade in honor of Independence Day in Minsk.

On this chariot missile system "Frontier" and must step up combat duty in 2016.

Might make them have second thoughts about all these ABM systems they are planning for all over the place (ie Europe, SK/Japan, etc etc).

Of course initially the Russians would benefit from the US blowing a few trillion on useless systems like these, but eventually it will get better and better and become a real problem that would likely need steps to deal with... of course even if it never works the potential for US leaders to actually think it will be effective is just as dangerous as if it did work.

Shouldn't be all Soviet-era missiles withdrawn from service before they start to decommission missiles from the post-Soviet era?

According to him, the Topol missile system is currently in service with 7 RVSN divisions of the total 12. "The Teikovo missile division has been rearmed with the Topol-M and Yars missile systems now. Its rearmament has been completed," he said.

Isn't the Rubezh supposed to be a 2-stage version of the Yars/Topol, with reduced range but more advanced features?

Well I'm not sure if it suits the Yars-M designation; it's not really a modernized Yars after all, but rather a different missile that will be used concurrently with the Yars but differently.

    What's the Yars-M?

All a little confusing, but as far as I know the Yars is an upgrade of the TOPOL-M with multiple warheads as standard... Topol-M has one warhead normally plus decoys and jammers.

    Yars is heavier than Topol-M.

Yars-M could be the Rubezh... sometimes called Avanguard and has hypersonic manouering warheads (ie MARV).

But then there is the Sarmat liquid fuelled missile intended to replace the SS-18.

Shouldn't be all Soviet-era missiles withdrawn from service before they start to decommission missiles from the post-Soviet era?

    Yes and no.

Yes... they obviously want to withdraw all the missiles with ukrainian components as quickly as possible, but the problem with Topol and Topol-M is that they were developed under the START II period when large warhead payloads were not allowed and single warheads on each missile was required. When you have half the warheads in your forces on a few heavyweight missiles and the other half on single warhead missiles... if you retire the missiles with 10 warheads in each then you either make ten new missiles with one warhead to replace the retired warheads from one old missile, or you retire the newer missile but replace it with an even newer missile with 6 warheads.

In other words replace 10 single warhead Topols and two ten warhead SS-18 with 5 Yars missiles with 6 warheads and you keep the same number of warheads... in time when Sarmat is ready you can replace SS-18s one for one so you can replace them much faster without worrying about not having enough warheads or having to make hundreds of single warhead missiles.

the point is that it is easier to replace the Topol and Topol-M single warhead missiles than the older heavier missiles with more warheads.

Isn't the Rubezh supposed to be a 2-stage version of the Yars/Topol, with reduced range but more advanced features?

AFAIK it is an upgraded Yars with MARV warheads and launched from a truck... perhaps the M is for mobile?

Well I'm not sure if it suits the Yars-M designation; it's not really a modernized Yars after all, but rather a different missile that will be used concurrently with the Yars but differently.

Perhaps Yars will be silo based and Yars-M will be truck based...

then of course there will be Sarmat... and possible trained based Yars too.

Cutting-edge ballistic missile to be fielded with Russian missile force in 2016

The first regiment is to enter combat duty as part of the Strategic Missile Force division in Irkutsk next year.An advanced solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile derived from the RS-24 Yars (NATO reporting name SS-27 Mod. 2) and designated tentatively as RS-26 will be fielded with the Irkutsk-based Guards division in 2016, a source in Russian’s defense industry told TASS on Wednesday.

"Its full-rate production is to be launched later in the year, and the first regiment is to enter combat duty as part of the Strategic Missile Force division in Irkutsk next year," the source said. As was reported in the press, the RS-26 will enter the Irkutsk Guards division’s inventory in 2015. However, its service entry had to be postponed due to several of its tests having been put off.

The RS-26 missile, also known as Rubezh, is an RS-24 Yars derivative. It is supposed to be lighter than the Yars, but carry improved equipment and a multiple individually targeted re-entry vehicle. Only mobile launchers will fire off missiles like that, since no provision has been made for a silo-based version.

This confirms it then - the RS-26 (AKA Yars-M) is the Rubezh/Avangard.

Why the Hell are they still allowing plant tours by NATO agents? Time to retire this "post Cold War" nonsense and
rip up some of the ICBM reductions treaties. NATO's ABM agenda is excuse enough.

Russia delays demonstrating new RS-26 ballistic missile to US inspectors till 2016

The US side has been notified of this decision and has taken note of it, a source says

Strategic missile force tests ballistic missile Topol with advanced warhead

MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. The demonstration of Russia’s newest RS-26 Rubezh ballistic missile to US inspectors has been delayed until next year, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry told TASS on Wednesday.

"By decision of the Defense Ministry, the demonstration of our new intercontinental ballistic missile RS-26 to a group of US inspectors has been rescheduled from November 2015 to 2016 and the new time schedule of the demonstration has not yet been determined," the source said.

"The US side has been notified of this decision and has taken note of it," the source said.

According to the source, as the missile will be demonstrated at the Votkinsk machine-building enterprise in Udmurtia in the Urals in compliance with the new START Treaty on strategic offensive arms reduction and limitation, the US side will get "certain data" on its technical characteristics, which make it different from the existing Yars and Topol-M missiles.

In addition, the Russian side will also give US inspectors photos of the RS-26 missile, if it receives a relevant request. Finally, the US inspectors will be able to examine and measure the missile but they won’t be allowed to touch it or make video footage of it and they also won’t see the missile launcher.

Russia’s Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) announced a tender in spring for organizing the demonstration of the RS-26 missile to US inspectors. Over 11 million rubles ($178,000) were planned to be allocated for this event, including organizing the trip of the US inspectors and accompanying Russian officials, providing food, accommodation and souvenirs.

The RS-26 solid-propellant ballistic missile code-named Rubezh is based on the RS-24 missile. The RS-26 is expected to be lighter than the Yars missile and will carry a multiple warhead (the Yars missile is equipped only with one warhead).

The RS-26 will be launched only from mobile systems as it has no silo-based version. The missile is expected to come into service with the Irkutsk missile division of Russia’s Strategic Missile Force in 2016.

Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces to test-fire new RS-26 missile in 2nd quarter of 2016

The firing is to be conducted in the second quarter of this year from the Kapustin Yar range at the Balkhash range in Kazakhstan

MOSCOW, February 20. /TASS/. Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces will test-fire an RS-26 Rubezh state-of-the-art intercontinental ballistic missile in the second quarter of 2016, a source in the defense industry sector told TASS Saturday.

"The firing is to be conducted in the second quarter of this year from the Kapustin Yar range at the Balkhash range in Kazakhstan," the source said.

The RS-26 solid-propellant ballistic missile codenamed Rubezh is based on the RS-24 missile. The RS-26 is expected to be lighter than the RS-24 Yars missile and will carry a multiple warhead (the Yars missile is equipped only with one warhead).

The RS-26 will be launched only from mobile systems as it has no silo-based version. The missile is expected to come into service with the Irkutsk missile division of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces in 2016.

The confidence test-firing of the RS-26 was carried out in mid-March 2015.

A range of 11,000 km and a continuously changing trajectory, meaning that it can very likely penetrate even the most advanced missile defense shields. RS-26 so special is that even though it weighs just 80 tons, compared to the 120-ton heft of its RS-24 Yars predecessor, the Rubezh packs a frightening 1,2 megatons into its four 300 kiloton warheads.

Moreover, its booster stage is down to under five minutes, which means that NATO radars in Europe will have no time to register the launch.

Adding to NATO air defenders’ worries, during the descending section of its trajectory, with only a few hundred kilometers left to the target, the missile’s warheads suddenly take a dive, lose altitude, and continue the approach as a cruise missile.

All work on the" Rubezh "and" Barguzin" frozen until the end of 2027

This saves lots of money and releases resources to economy. As long as Kindzhal, Sarmat/Avangard and Poseidon are in place no hurry for Rubezh.
