Do you know if they have filled those spend shells with sand or anything to actually increase protection or is ist just "spaced armor"?

Either an AK-74 or perhaps an AK-101, which is an AK-74 in 5.56mm calibre... I think AK-74 in 5.45mm calibre as the 5.56mm mag is almost straight.

It has an under barrel 40mm grenade launcher and a scope.

The SAA looks completely spent and exhausted; their vehicles are battered, equipment/uniforms becoming ever more non-standerdised, no time for paint-jobs or cleaning - everything and everyone looks like its been through hell, extensive piecemail field modifications to vehicles, ever more manpower reliance on older men and women... parts of it look more like a militia than a regular army.

Really, I hope the conflict finishes soon. I'm surprised it's still ongoing. It has entered stalemate long-ago and no-one on any side is in any condition to fight it anymore, nor is there much reason to; other than perhaps finishing off the extremists like ISIS or Al-Nusra. Everyone else should accept negotiations/coalition government/general amnesty/whatever.
