Let me remind you that a feature of the Ugolyok ROC is the absolute "Russification" of the complexes being developed, which provides for a complete rejection of foreign materials, components and technologies in relation to weapons, ammunition and sighting systems.
The rejection of western systems and materials with two western calibres?

Hahaha, it made me laugh out loud. I understand that they want to move away from 54r, but sure, but I see very little use testing 7.62x51 Nato round. It's a copy of legacy round. .338 on other hand was tested by Russians for years. It would be good to develop similiar domestic round as by the looks of it - there's a big demand for it.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
I am just hoping these are place holders for new rounds they are working to make better.
I mean the 7.62x51mm round is physically very very similar to a 6x49mm cartridge... 1.5mm smaller calibre and a 2mm shorter case.
They have also mentioned they were working on an adapted long range sniper round based on the .338 Lapua round but that the new round will be a 9mm calibre projectile with more energetic propellent and a heavier but higher velocity projectile for longer effective range shooting but without having to go to that 10-15kg rifle weight you need to go for a 12.7mm rifle.
They might be looking at plastic cased ammo or caseless ammo too, but they mentioned somewhere about new ammo types with vastly higher muzzle velocities and different firing mechanisms... maybe liquid propellents that are microwaved like their new artillery propellent systems...
I would think it would be part of Ratnik III which is supposed to be ready in 2025...
If they do plan new Russian calibres similar to these rounds but obviously domestic then that would make them totally Russian... but if that is the plan then 9x21mm should be the new pistol and SMG calibre too...

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Russia to launch state trials of new Ugolyok sniper rifle for troops in 2022
It is to feature solely domestic materials and components, the Rostec press office told TASS
MOSCOW, February 18. /TASS/. The Central Research Institute of Precision Machine-Building (TsNIITochMash, part of the state tech corporation Rostec) has launched work on creating prototypes of the Ugolyok new sniper rifle that will enter state trials next year, the Rostec press office told TASS on Thursday.
"Currently, sniper rifle prototypes are being made to hold preliminary trials. The state trials are planned to begin in 2022," the press office said.

Today, the Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD) adopted for service in the 1960s is the basic sniper gun in the Russian Army.
The Ugolyok sniper rifle is being developed using solely domestic materials and components. The new gun is expected to be outfitted with new sights. The new sniper system will use Russian cartridges but of NATO calibers: the .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm) and the far more powerful .338 Lapua Magnun (8.6x70mm), the press office said.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Actually the most compelling reason to use HATO standard calibres is so you can use foreign made high precision sniper ammo and not have to go to the expense of making it yourself... but I doubt the best makers would be allowed to supply the Russian armed forces with precision small arms ammo.
If they are going to be producing the ammo themselves I would think making domestic versions would make more sense... like they did with 9x19mm pistol ammo...
Make it too hot to use in western firearms....
I am surprised they are not talking about multicalibre weapons where barrels and parts can be swapped out in a sniping rig that can be used with small closer range ammo and heavier longer ranged ammo.
The 7.62x51mm is not that amazing, they were talking about the 6x49mm ammo being superior in most regards... even the 7.62 x 54mm Rimmed cartridge they use now is easily competitive to the western round in most regards and superior in the heavier bullet weights too due to its larger case capacity.
One factor this is ignoring is that Soviet and Russian 30 calibre firearms... Tokarev pistol (7.62x25mm), Mosin and SVD rifles and PK and Maxim machine guns and 7.62 x 39mm AKs and RPK LMGs all used the same .311 calibre bullet. The 7.62 x 51mm round has a smaller projectile which wont be compatible with any previous Soviet rifle or pistol or SMG calibre.
The projectiles will need to be unique... including API-T rounds and all the other types snipers sometimes need to use against a variety of targets.
Existing AP and other type rounds will be the wrong calibre so new rounds will have to be developed.
Russian ammo makers have been making western calibres for a while but only in soft nose civilian hunting and full metal jacket practise shooting rounds for the commercial hunting market.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Concern "Kalashnikov" finalized a sniper rifle to replace the SVD
Today, 13: 11The Chukavin sniper rifle (SHCH), planned to replace the Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD), has been modified in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Defense. This was reported by the press service of the Kalashnikov concern.
The concern explained that the new microwave sniper rifle, developed as part of the "Reaper" ROC, was improved at the request of the customer - the Russian military. The details of the revision were not reported, the rifle is at the stage of state tests.
Currently, the microwave rifle, modified taking into account the wishes of the customer, continues to undergo a cycle of state tests
- stated in the concern.
The new Chukavin sniper rifle (SHCh) was developed by the Kalashnikov concern on the instructions of the Ministry of Defense to replace the outdated Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD). The microwave oven was first shown to the public in 2017 at the Army-2017 forum.
The rifle was originally sold in three calibers - 7,62x54R, 7,62x51 NATO (.308 Win), and also .338 Lapua Magnum (8,6x70 mm). At the same time, in the caliber 7,62x54R, the microwave rifle is fully compatible with magazines from the SVD.
Trunk weapons allows the installation of devices for silent flameless shooting or muzzle brakes. The weapon is equipped with long Picatinny rails. The length of the microwave, depending on the version, is from 995 to 1015 millimeters, and the mass is 4,2 kilograms with an empty magazine and an installed optical sight. The weapon is equipped with a barrel length of 410 millimeters. The microwave oven has an aiming range of 1200 meters.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
The Chukavin sniper rifle (SHF) is the latest development of the Kalashnikov concern in the field of high-precision small arms. The Chukavin semi-automatic sniper rifle is available in two calibers - 7.62 × 54 mm and 7.62 × 51 mm (the latter is also known as .308 Win, this caliber is very popular on the world market).
The 7.62 × 54 mm rifle uses a reliable and well-proven magazine from the legendary Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD). The microwave caliber 7.62 × 51 mm uses a new magazine designed specifically for it. The fuse can be turned on and off from both the left and right sides, and in general the microwave controls are very convenient and ergonomic. At the international military-technical forum Army-2017, the Kalashnikov concern will present a line of self-loading rifles (SHF). The Chukavin sniper rifle is one of the most innovative developments of the Kalashnikov concern. It is planned that this particular weapon will eventually replace the rifle (SVD), which for many years served the Soviet and Russian armies with faith and truth. According to the general director of the Kalashnikov concern Alexei Krivoruchko, the rifle has a very great future, the Ministry of Defense and the National Guard, as well as export partners, are interested. There are great prospects in the civilian market.
CHARACTERISTICS:
Caliber 7.62 mm
Used ammunition 7.62 × 54R
Weight without cartridges 4.6 kg
Total length 1090-1150 mm
Magazine capacity 10 cartridges
Barrel length 565 mm

Cadets of the Western Military District's sniping center performed live firing at targets at ranges of up to 1,300 meters during control exercises at a training ground in the Leningrad Region.
The servicemen took up positions for firing on unequipped terrain, determined the initial data for the shot and carried out camouflage.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Nice.
To be clear unequipped terrain means just shooting out in normal open area, as opposed to on a shooting range where distances to different target positions are fixed and known.
Shame there is no word on new rifle calibres, the 7.62 x54 was a good round, but a more modern round could be designed.
They are going to have to do it eventually and the longer the leave it the more painful it is going to be... although as existing optical sights in armoured vehicles are replaced with electronic sights the issue will reduce.
When the PKM replaced the SGMT as the standard Soviet coaxial weapon on armour vehicles, they cheated a little and actually extended the barrel of the PKMT so that its ballistics better matched those of the SGMT it replaced so they could continue to use existing optical sights installed for the SGMT weapons.
This made the transition much quicker and easier, but a new 6x49mm round will be higher velocity flatter shooting cartridge, which will have a rather different range scale for shooting, which is not a big deal for a hand held weapon as its iron sights will be properly calibrated, but for a vehicle mount you would also need to change the optical sight.
For a vehicle like Armata etc it would like just be a software upgrade to change the ballistics profile of the coaxial MG so it gives the correct point of aim.
There would be no point in trying to shorten the barrel to match the trajectory of the PK because improved flatter trajectory is the whole point of the weapon.
An extra long heavy barrel for vehicle mounts might further improve ballistic performance...

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
State tests of the Chukavin sniper rifle will end at the end of 2021.
Prototypes of the rifle as part of the Zhnets (Eng: Reaper) development work are being tested at the Russian Ministry of Defense. This was announced at the International Military-Technical Forum "Army-2021" by the press service of the Kalashnikov concern, Interfax writes.
Chukavin's new sniper rifle was shown at the forum in 2017. It is made according to an unusual layout scheme for Russian weapons: almost all the load falls on the upper steel part. For the rifle,7.62 x 54 rounds are used, the magazine capacity is 10-20 rounds, the weight is 4.2 kilograms.
Small arms are equipped with a telescopic butt, and the Picatinny rail is installed along the entire length of the receiver. This allows you to mount any attachments.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Russia is developing rifle range up to 3 km with NATO caliber, 18/09/2021.
Russia is developing an ultra-long-range, high-precision rifle with NATO caliber ammunition capable of hitting targets in real combat conditions at a distance of 2.5-3 kilometers, Maksim Baimetov, chief designer of the Russian company Orsis, said in an interview with Sputnik.
"We decided to go even further: to create a large-caliber rifle with universal NATO ammunition of .50 bmg (12.7 99 millimeters), which is used in a wide range of weapons, from shotguns to machine guns. This rifle will be able to fire at a record distance of 2.5 - 3 kilometers," he explained.
Baimetov noted that the tests of the rifle should begin in early 2022. According to him, this weapon is being developed for export, but the project has already aroused interest from Russian security forces.
The interlocutor stressed that this is a weapon for use in real combat conditions, which will be able to hit targets at these distances not in isolated cases, when the goal is to set a record, but on a regular basis.
"Our indicated parameters suggest that snipers will be able to hit targets at a distance of about 2.5 km with accurate firing and this will be the rule and not the exception. Currently, no one in Russia produces combat weapons of this class," commented chief designer.
For comparison, Baimetov referred to the most popular weapon developed by the company, the T-5000 - high-precision rifle with a range of 1.6 km.
The T-5000 was developed in collaboration with professional shooters. This weapon can be used day or night and in all weather conditions with high shooting accuracy and at great distances.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
This design is clearly aimed at export and the chances of the Russian military adopting it will hopefully be low.
This Orsis design is based on western 50 cal calibre rounds and as the article is intended for the 2.5-3km range range use category.
Kalashnikov has developed the Sevastopol for use in a similar range bracket using a round that is not in Russian military use either, but is designed for long range shooting.
408 Chaytak is 2.3km range and 375 Chaytak to 2.8km... sounds good enough in a rifle that weighs 8.5kgs
The Orsis model would make sense in 12.7 x 108mm or even 14.5 x 114mm, but if you are going to use an American cartridge why not use a round custom designed for long range accurate shooting?

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Scope for improvement: Russian army to adopt state-of-the-art marksman rifle as part of modernization plans, weapon developer says, 05/10/2021.
Russia’s largest arms manufacturer has said that its new and improved sniper rifle has now completed the final stages of production, showing “positive results” in tests, and could soon be used to hunt enemies on the battlefield.
In a statement to RIA Novosti on Tuesday, the Kalashnikov Group reported that the Chukavin rifle – codenamed Reaper – is close to being ready to enter mass production. It is set to replace the Army’s current long-range rifle, the Dragunov, which despite its easy operation and reliability since 1963, no longer satisfies requirements in terms of range and destruction. The new Chukavin is capable of destroying a target up to a kilometer away with a single shot.
The semi-automatic rifle was first presented at the ‘Army-2017’ exhibition as part of a new generation of guns being produced for Russia’s troops on the ground. Other weapon upgrades include replacing the standard issue AK-74 assault rifle with the new AK-12, arming Russian air force pilots with PPK-20 submachine guns, and swapping the Makarov pistol for the new Udav side arm.
“At present, the results of the tests are being documented, after which a decision is expected to adopt a new rifle complex into service,” the group told RIA.
The news about Russia’s latest sniper rifle comes just days after the country’s military announced further developments in modernizing and upgrading its forces. Head of the Russian ground units General Oleg Salyukov revealed last week that a “new ‘robotic’ subsystem as part of the combat outfit” is being developed as part of the ‘future soldier’ program.
In September this year during the Zapad-2021 exercises, Russia also unveiled combat robots that are able to destroy tanks without risking the lives of ground forces. Other advanced developments include the Zircon hypersonic missile, which was successfully launched on Monday from a submarine, as well as the S-500 Prometey surface-to-air missile system, the T-14 Armata main battle tank, and the TOS-2 Tosochka heavy flamethrower.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian sniper rifle manufacturer Lobaev Arms has developed a unique multi-calibre DXL-5 Ravager rifle (export name Havoc), capable of interchangeably using NATO’s and Russian cartridges, Vladislav Lobaev, the director-general of Lobaev Arms enterprise-developer, told Sputnik.
"The main feature of the new rifle is its modularity. On the Ravager, we were the first to implement the ability for snipers to change barrels for two calibres at once - NATO’s .50 BMG [Browning Machine Gun] (12.7 x 99 mm) and domestic 12.7 x 108 mm, depending on the military task at hand. This significantly increases its export prospects," Lobaev said.
The developer emphasised that the new rifle has an accuracy of 0.5 arcminutes, which is unique for the 12.7 mm calibre. It means that the Ravager shoots four times more accurately than its US competitor Barret, which has an accuracy of 2 arcminutes.
Lobaev noted that such high accuracy and target range shooting distance (about 7,545 feet versus 5,905 feet for Barret) will allow the Ravager to perform one of the most complex tasks, namely to fight against the enemy sniper units.
According to Lobaev, the Ravager also has a damping device on its stock, which significantly reduces the kick of the rifle weighing 13 kilograms (29 pounds).
"The Ravager is not just a sniper rifle, but also a ‘laboratory’ for testing new calibres. Especially for it, we have developed four new calibres, which we plan to test in the near future. If everything goes well, then we will be able to reach simply unique indicators of the firing range for weapons of this class," Lobaev said.
Currently, Sumrak (Twilight) rifle, also produced by Lobaev Arms, is the world's longest-range rifle, as it can strike targets at a maximum range of 4.2 kilometres.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
TASS: the longest-range rifle in the world Sumrak ("Twilight") was used for the first time in a special operation in Ukraine, 21.07.2022.
The Russian sniper rifle SVLK-14S "Twilight", which is considered the most long-range rifle in the world, was first used during a military special operation in Ukraine. It is reported by TASS with reference to a source in law enforcement agencies.
“Russian special forces in the zone of the military operation in Ukraine for the first time began to use the SVLK-14S ultra-long-range rifle,” the source said. He clarified that the rifle was used near Kharkov and Kyiv, but rarely, since there was no suitable terrain.
The TASS source called the combination of large-caliber cartridges and high accuracy of shooting at ultra-long distances the advantages of the Twilight rifle. Cons - a lot of weight, as well as expensive and hard-to-reach cartridges.
SVLK-14S (Large-caliber Lobaev sniper rifle) was developed by the private arms company Lobaev Arms in 2012. With its use in 2017, a world record was achieved - hitting a target at a distance of 4210 m.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Russian Sumrak sniper rifle helped eliminate dozens of high-priority targets, 09.20.2022.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Snipers of the allied forces of Russia and the Donbas Republics using the SVLK-14S Sumrak long-range rifles have already eliminated dozens of high-priority targets with this weapon during the military operation, the Lobaev Arms company told Sputnik.
"The Lobaev Arms rifles used by the Allied forces in the special military operation [in Ukraine] exhibit high efficiency. Particularly with the SVLK-14S Sumrak sniper rifle, dozens of high-priority targets have already been eliminated," the Russian company reported.
They also commented that sniper units also use other models of Lobaev Arms rifles in the military operation. For example, along with the Sumrak the TSVL-8 M1 Stalingrad with the cartridge are used.338 LM/.300 WM or the DXL-5 Opustoshitel rifle with a cartridge.50 BMG (12.7×99 mm NATO).
The SVLK-14S Sumrak rifle was developed by Lobaev Arms with the powerful ammunition .375 Cheytac/.408 Cheytac as a long-range rifle capable of hitting targets at distances of more than 3,000 meters.
Last August, Lobaev Arms informed Sputnik that the Allied forces participating in the special military operation in Ukraine use the NATO DXL-5 Opustoshitel sniper rifle of calibre 12.7x99 mm. The weapon stands out for high accuracy.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Russia has created a remote-controlled anti-sniper system
Russia has created the first remote-controlled anti-sniper system "Rubezh".
MOSCOW, October 14 - RIA Novosti. Russia has created the world's first anti-sniper system "Rubezh", Vladislav Lobaev, the founder of the enterprise-developer of this weapon Lobaev Arms, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“Currently, we are finalizing our anti-sniper system “Rubezh” consisting of: the “Defeat”, “False target” and “False weapon” complex. <…> This is not even about a rifle, but about a robotic weapon with electric trigger and shutter drives , this is our know-how - other enterprises of both the domestic and foreign shooting industry, including the enemy, do not have such projects yet," he said.
Speaking about the principle of operation of the "Frontier", Lobaev explained that the operator of such a system would control all three of its constituent complexes at once: call fire on a false target using decoy weapons, identify the position of the enemy and eliminate him using the destruction complex.
According to him, Lobaev Arms already has a prototype of this system, which can be demonstrated to a potential customer.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
In Crimea, a counter-sniper unit with Lobaev rifles is being formed, by Oleg Koryakin for Rossiskaya Gazeta. 01.21.2023
A counter-sniper unit is being created in Crimea, which will work in the NMD on the basis of the "fire brigade" principle. This was reported on the air of the TV channel "Crimea 24".
A unit is being formed on the basis of the 165 training center on the initiative of the head of the region Vasily Aksenov and with the participation of the famous gunsmith Vladislav Lobaev.
“This will allow combatant units that for some reason did not take care of acquiring high-precision modern sniper weapons or were unable to organize training, or did not have time, to receive such counter-sniper services, so to speak,” Vladislav Lobaev explained. “The unit will carry out tasks in the hottest sectors of the front, where the activity of enemy snipers is very high."
He specified that the unit will be armed with the full range of sniper rifles that his company manufactures.
Recall that Lobaev's ultra-long-range and high-precision rifles are extremely in demand in the NVO zone. They allow you to deal great damage to the enemy.
The most productive sniper with the call sign "Yaryy", who destroyed more than 100 fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, uses the SVLK-14S "Dusk" rifle.

Re: Russian Sniper Rifles
Russia Starts Producing Completely Domestic Cheytac Sniper Cartridge, 05.13.2023.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has launched the serial production of the Cheytac sniper rifle cartridge made from domestic components only, thanks to import substitution, the head of Russian arms manufacturer Lobaev Arms, Vladislav Lobaev, told Sputnik.
"We have created a fully Russian cartridge for caliber 375 Cheytac rifles, and have already begun its mass production. For the first time, our 375 Cheytac rifles are supplied with Russian cartridges developed by Lobaev Arms and gunpowder from a Kazan enterprise, before we used foreign components," Lobaev said.
He specified that the foreign components previously used for cartridges of this caliber were supplied from the US, Finland and Australia.
After Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Western countries rolled out a massive sanctions campaign against Moscow. Sanctions, particularly restrictions on new technology, have pushed Russian manufacturers to accelerate import substitution.
According to data of Russian statistical agency Rosstat, in 2022, an increase in production was registered in various domestically oriented businesses, including the production of drugs and medical equipment. The growth amounted to 8.6% in comparison with 2021.
