Indeed. When I read that looting had taken place, I felt it summed up the last 20 years rather well.

I am sure the locals will be wondering who is next... there are probably all sorts of rare earth minerals and material wealth in those mountains that have not been taken advantage of because it is so remote and inhospitable.
Of course so many factions are used to being manipulated there there is always going to be opposition and fighting... even just to economic growth and development...

Looking at the performance of this things in Syria (engine malfunctions, whole tyres coming of) it was a good decision to leave them behind.

U.S. Creating 400,000 Strong Military Force for Asia-Pacific War on China - Russian Intelligence Chief
As the Joe Biden administration makes countering China its primary foreign policy priority, it has drastically increased military activities in the East and South China Seas and escalated efforts to great a power bloc to maintain American hegemony in the region. Chief of the Main Directorate of the Russian General Staff (GRU) military intelligence agency, Igor Kostyukov, reported that the United States has created a 400,000 strong force for the Asia-Pacific to target China. Speaking in Moscow at a conference on international security on June 23, Kostyukov said Washington was demonstrating that it is was not ready to engage in equal dialogue, and sought to pull India into a NATO-style alliance to dominate the region and isolate Russia and China. He stated to this effect: "The United States, obsessed with the goal of global domination, is demonstrating its unwillingness to engage in equal dialogue. US doctrinal documents enshrine the methods for building relations with other countries from a position of strength.”
According to Kostyukov, the Pentagon plans to create a task force in the Pacific specifically aimed at containing China in south and east Asia by 2024, and will set up two brigades for cyber operations by 2028. Hypersonic missiles will also be deployed to the region by that time. China became the world’s largest economy in 2017, and has been the primary focus of American military attentions since 2010 when the Barak (sic) Obama administration launched the ‘Pivot to Asia’ initiative. China has notably outspent the U.S. in new military acquisitions from 2020, and its defence sector is able to provide new armaments at a small fraction of the cost in part due to its far larger industrial base. China’s J-20 stealth fighter, for example, has a research of development cost before entering service of just $4.5 billion - while its lighter America rival the F-35 which has similar technological features cost approximately $55 billion to develop. This discrepancy has forced the U.S. to rely on building coalitions to try to maintain a balance of power in the region that favours American and Western interests. The majority of countries in the region, however, attribute much more importance to their trading relations with China than with the U.S., and have been reluctant to enter into an anti-Chinese partnership despite considerable Western pressure. Others such as Cambodia, North Korea and Russia are much more likely to align against the U.S. if forced to choose.

That' not even bigger than a neighbourhood of a small chinese town.
They will need at least 10-20 million soldiers to fight China on its soil.

You're right I don't think the Chinese would waste any tactical nuclear bombs on those 400 000 US troops at all!
When the Chinese crossed the Yellow River back in the 50's just the sound of the bugles were enough to rout the US troops!

400.000 is exactly the number of people required to operate US arsenal of IRBMs aimed at China plus their security detail and logistics
It's not a big mystery

Yeah not gonna happen. China isn't going to invade US anyway so those missiles will never be used.
What they will invade is south China sea and Taiwan one day. And US have nothing to counter that.

What I find hilarious is how small Taiwan actually is, it's like half the size of Serbia
And how close to China it is, 300 miles at most, that's close enough for Zubr-class hovercraft to make a round trip with plenty of gas to spare

Not really the sea between China and Taiwan is very very rough to the point landing operations are only possibly like 2 months out of the year.
This is the reason China hasn't attacked yet because they have a small timeframe to do so and they will need lots and lots men and equipment.
Taiwan has been turned into a natural fortress, China will eventually take but their losses are going to be immense doing so

Re: US Overseas Deployments and Bases
To be honest for years having the very occasional Big Mac, I did not realise what many of its contents were... didn't realise it was supposed to have onions in it.
In comparison Burger King the meat tastes like meat and the onions on the whopper taste like real onions.
IMHO BK is superior to Maccers.... but many local burger joints do a much better more filling burger for less...
Of all American fast food options I prefer KFC and even then I can't have it more than about once a fortnight.
Colonel Sanders... gotta respect a man that thinks more about breasts and thighs than I do...

The US move into Jordan
A really significant strategic move by the US. Allowing them to interfere all over the ME with ground based, as opposed to sea based, forces.
Last month the White House reported to move the troops and equipment slowly to Jordan. It started by Joe Biden presidency which reformed the military and political priorities of USA in the realm of CENTCOM responsibility. The redistribution of the troops are as follows,
1- Qatar: US Army closed As Sayliyah Army Base and Falcon warehouse and transfered them to Jordan in June. US will probably keep Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
2- Afghanistan: All for the US troops and equipment to evacuate Afghanistan, some of which will go to the neighbors of Afghanistan such as Tajikistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Jordan. Two thousand American troops transfered from Afghanistan to Jordan.
3 Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE: The transfer of American troops and equipment to Jordan. After call between Lloyd Austin, US DoD, with Mohammad Bin Salman, Saudi crown prince, it was agreed that US transfer eight Patriot SAMs from Iraq, Kuwait and Jordan and one THAAD SAM from Saudi Arabia.
Why US is transferring the troops to Jordan? On 31th January Jordan and USA signed a defense treatment. Jordan government approved it on 17 February. It includes 19 sections that allows US soldiers to carry weapons in Jordan and allows US aerial and naval crew to enter Jordan without visa. The agreement was criticized by some members of the Jordanian parliament and political and legal experts, with many expressing concern that the agreement was a sign of colonialism and a violation of Jordanian sovereignty and was unconstitutional because it was passed without parliamentary approval by the government. One of the reasons for this transfer is to keep them out of Iran’s missiles and its proxies reaches, according to American analysts.
According to US DoD, Jordan is a strategic friend of US in security in the region and cooperates with American coalition against ISIS, Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. According to this agreement, American forces control 12 bases for 15 Years, from which 4 are used jointly by Jordan for training and other purposes.Under the agreement, some Jordanian bases will also be used by US forces. Accordingly, Muwaffaq Salti Air Base will become the main base and headquarters of US drones in West Asia.
It was also decided that the US military would operate at the Jordanian Air Force Main Training Center (Amman Training Center) in the Jordanian capital, Al-Hamimah Naval Base, Jordanian Air Force Command Center (King Abdullah II Air Base), Aqaba Naval Base، Jordanian military training base in al-Quwara, King Abdullah’s base to train Jordanian special forces, Prince Hassan Air Base, Prince Faisal Air Base, Al-Tatan Training Barracks and 15 border bases with Iraq and Syria.
Al-Tanf’s US base on the Iraqi-Syrian border is expected to be strengthened after the large-scale deployment of US troops in Jordan.
This extensive shift of power in west of Asia shows that Jordan is to be used as US main HQ to fight with the resistance axis and keep Israel safe by opposing Iran’s activities! This is not in favor of Islamic Republic and states of the region were warned numerous times by Iran.

Why so many US bases in Africa? It can't surely be anything to do with these statistics, can it?

98% of the world's chromium

The US is bolstering its military footprint in Africa despite not being at war with any African country.

Re: US Overseas Deployments and Bases
Interesting, surely the rise of Islamic terrorism in the Sahel and Mozambique et al would play a part in an increase in America’s military footprint. I wonder if/when the first squadrons of the usaf get permanently assigned to a base in Africa, I’ve heard nothing about it happening but I have heard rumours of the 349th ARS moving to Mildenhall to allow for an increase in African ops.

Looks like a proper US installation to me, monitoring quite a large area up to Russia. A southern version of RAF Fylingdales in the UK.

Qatar considers Iran its biggest military threat.
Qatar installed an AN/FPS-132 (Solid-state phased array) radar to monitor missile activity within a radius of 3,000 miles (4828km). This was a big purchase, $1.1 billion, making Qatar the only one with this radar after US & UK.
