It reminded me of the Ural command/ intelligence ship, with bow and stern chopped off...
I think another smaller intelligence ship was recently scrapped.

Would've been a shame to blow up the Ural.

Looks like a nice big fat juicy target with high RCS that is hard to miss.
On the other hand the USNavy carriers and amphibious ships are even bigger, fatter, juicier and with an even bigger RCS.

Thanks Garry , my voteGarryB wrote:If you look at a conventional (ie diesel electric) sub you will see along with the periscope there are other mast mounted antenna including active and passive radar and radio antenna as well as different optical periscopes including slim attack periscopes as well as standard thermal equipped scopes etc etc.
Also the snorkel for running the diesel engines while at periscope depth... any of which could be used to mount radar or IR sensors to detect helos and MPA aircraft. New missiles like Morfei make it even easier as they are lock on after launch missiles that will likely have a two way data link and some intelligence when it comes to engaging targets.
It wouldn't be that hard to release a hemispherical IIR sensor that gives a 360 degree view horizontally and a 180 degree view vertically of the air space above the water showing any IR targets like helos or Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA)... in fact an unmanned underwater vehicle could have stabilised optics and IIR sensors as well as an array of passive radar and radio sensors that can be released by the sub to go to the surface and look for targets before the sub decides to snorkel... enemy radar could detect the UUV but it might be 5km from where the mother sub actually is so the data it sends to the mother ship might let the captain decide whether to come to near the surface and engage the threat to the UUV or if the UUV might be armed with MANPADS it could defend itself, or it could submerge and go down to 1,000m beyond the reach of anything the helo or MPA is carrying and then start to make its way back to the mother sub...
of course in the future the MPA or Helo might drop their own UUVs to hunt down subs... expendible in the case of the MPA but recoverable with the helo...
Look
Triple M hoistable mast for subs: can be equipped with Mauser RMK 30mm cannon. That would allow a sub to engage a target with guinfire while submerged. Possibly in such a manner, one could also deploy MANPADS while submerged.
http://maschinenbau.gabler-luebeck.de/de/entwicklungen/eigenschutz/index.html
I also think the german navy see the need to have a surface to air missile because German navy operates subs often/mainly in the confined, shallow waters of the Baltic (as opposed to e.g. the deep open North Atlantic). Hence the use on Type 212A of non-magnetic steel and regular seel on Type 214. I.e. the sub is more likely to not have anywhere to go to avoid detection. Hence, an option that gives it a fighting chance makes good sense.

The SA-N-1 is still in service on land as the SA-3 but it is being withdrawn... they made hundreds of thousands of those missiles.
In terms of taking on NATO it is obsolete, but it is still a reliable and useful vessel that can perform a range of roles.

If the average level of technical proficiency and OPFOR's capability assessment and knowledge in US Navy is somewhat similar to that shown by Lieutenant Commander Tom Spahn we are completely safe

Re: Russian Navy: Status & News #1
Load of BS.As increasingly vitriolic rhetoric flows despite President Barack Obama’s repeated overtures of friendship, Moscow’s intentions are particularly troubling considering its recent rush to claim newly accessible resources laid bare by the receding Arctic ice sheet.
Anyone who didn't know any better would think the US was being friendly and Russia was being aggressive.
Who is encircling whom? Who directly tried to interfere in the others elections? etc etc etc... this guy has been living under a rock.

It is now in @ Mahachkala, along with "Mahachkala" the gunboat. So the Caspian Flotilla now has 2 new frigates (Tatarstan and Dagestan) + 3 21630 gunboats + 1 21631 missile ship. More of the latter will arrive next year, probably two more boats. Along with that small patrol boats like bellow, and Dugyn landing craft.
