Quite possibly one of the most expensive ways to advertise you're not allowed nukes...

I would say it is more of a case that their enemies are much closer than Americas are or Russias are so a missile with a range of 3,500km is good enough, but they want to obliterate their enemies with as many warheads as they can make and deliver.

These warheads will not be directed against military targets... they will be city killers with the objective to wipe out a large portion of the civilian population of their enemy countries... Japan and South Korea no doubt....

Without a nuclear warhead city killers they ain't.

Or they do and they're just going to launder their micro-nukes as conventional strikes. Razz

I mean, that's what FOAB and MOAB are. Razz

Technically speaking, what they do and develop suggests strongly that can go nuclear at any moment.
Having a conventional submarine Iskander-like carrier is senseless because you can't do much damage with it in a case of war.
But you can train crews, procedures, and tactics to be used later for nuclear deterrence.
    This thing is much alike.
A 9-axis carrier of a 3500 km missile is a serious overkill. The size of that thing is giant.
It is again a training ground for something much more serious, to master operations. And you can put an ICBM on the same hull at any moment, with every operational issue already trained ...
We are talking about the world's No 2 civil nuclear technology owner that puts satellites into space with its own carriers ...

The third, or second or first, is China with its highly developed civilian nuclear energy.

There is one interesting issue with the Hyunmoo 5, and that is official.
It carries a monstrous, 8 ton penetration warhead.
But Al Jazeera reported a statement to some SK defense committee member that if replaced by a normal, 1 ton class warhead, its range "exceeds 5kkm".
Not that I am any sort of missile technology specialist, but making the payload 1/8 of the original would increase the range by more than 30% ...
It is an ICBM, if you ask me ...

At ICBM range it will carry 1 to 1.5 tons. This is Yars level.

I wonder if the Russians helped them create this ICBM like in the case of the Korean Iskander, Onyx, etc.
