Looks like some wishful thinking... Russia doesn't have the time, resources, and money to build a carrier, at least for now.

Actually they're in the design stages of a new mega-carrier, and developing a electro-magnetic catapult for it.

I don't doubt that they are, but chances are it won't even begin the be built by ~2020 (~2025 would be a good guess).

Yes your right, it won't be in service until mid-2020's.

Re: Future russian aircraft carriers. #1
- That isn't a bad thing. I'd rather have Russia focus on nuclear subs, and subs in general, than a carrier of the future. Carriers are simply too large nowadays, I'm amazed the US still builds them... (Size = cost, increased maintenance, more resources and manpower etc. They are also very large targets!)

New aircraft carrier "Soviet Union".
Hmm, can't say I'd put that top of the betting.
Unless Putin asked Rogozin "what name would really annoy the Americans best?"

I think the plan for the carrier will come with the next state armaments program.

Name it Peter the Great with an iron figurehead of Peter the Great at the front like old ships have.

I wonder how the US would feel with the return of the Soviet Union... especially the part they played...

"The Kremlin" actually does sound pretty good, and intimidating as well... That "Peter the Great" idea would be just as good. Choices choices!

Re: Future russian aircraft carriers. #1
Ok, so lets say Russia builds 4 carriers, 2 for the northern and 2 for the pacific fleet:
1) The Kremlin
2) The Soviet Union
3) Peter the Great
4) The Khrushchev
Hmmm... to bad Gorshkov name was already taken.
