KGB History
Mysterious"Mr. X". As a scout Feklisov saved the world from nuclear war
March 9 marks the 105th anniversary of the birth of Hero of Russia Alexander Feklisov. TASS recalls the details of the biography and the finest hour of the legendary Soviet intelligence officer, who extracted US nuclear secrets.
Until recently, a bronze plaque hung on the Occidental restaurant in Washington DC that read: “During the tense period of the Cuban crisis, October 1962, the mysterious Russian“ Mr. Based on this meeting, the threat of nuclear war was averted. "
This mysterious stranger was Alexander Semenovich Feklisov , a resident intelligence officer of the USSR KGB in Washington. Then, in October 1962, for 13 days, the world was on the verge of a monstrous disaster. Fomin (under this pseudonym Feklisov worked in the United States) actively participated in defusing this tension and directly contributed to the decision by the American President John F. Kennedy to end the blockade of revolutionary Cuba. 15 years before these events, he was directly involved in obtaining the most important information on atomic topics: he worked with the eminent German nuclear physicist Klaus Fuchs, from whom he received the scheme and device of the hydrogen bomb.
