I'm not sure I ever introduced myself before when I made this account a good 10 years ago (surprised I could remember my user/login!).. but here goes.
I was born in Sumy, Ukraine/USSR (1988), but left in 1992 as my dad got a job in Asia, where I grew up and then ended up in the US East Coast for college/grad schoo/work (where I still am).
Though my family is all from Ukraine, my immediate family got Russian passports in the 90's and speak Russian/identify as Russian as much as Ukrainian.
I was in Sumy last in September 2021, where I saw my grandfather, who I was very close to.
By whatever powers that be, he passed away in the very early morning of Feb 24, 2022, after being hospitalized with some respiratory health issues.
On the one hand he hated the Banderas & related groups with a passion, on the other hand, according to my mother, he was afraid that after being "born into a war" (b. 1937), he would die in a war. Well, I suppose, he escaped that fate by hours, if that. On the other hand, he will never know that the Russians were coming to dismantle what the Ukrainian ultranationalists did to Ukraine. He lost a brother in the GPW and another was wounded, but survived. All those memories were with him forever, even if he was 2-7 years old when it happened.
