Hamas 'got so strong' because Israel did not withdraw from the West Bank and follow the peace plan and understandings with the Palestinian side that it reached in the early 90s when both sides accepted the other's borders. The Palestinians had already accepted Israel in its 1967 borders for the sake of lasting peace despite the fact that these same borders would handicap any sort of future Palestinian state.

Furthermore Israel from approx. 2003-2023 was at the historical height of its power and was in a golden age of economic development and security relative to its neighbours. Israel had every opportunity to follow through with stopping colonization and then disbanding the settlements in return for its recognition by the rest of the Middle East. Regardless of Hamas or Hezbollah. They couldn't threaten Israel, or so it seemed, and by exercising good will and political wisdom Israel could isolate them.
Why didn't it pursue this avenue? Who knows.
You can blame Netanyahu but he's just the public face of a much wider, 'greater Israel' political movement.

But what isn't a mystery to me at all is why radically-orientated forces cemented themselves in Gaza in turn. What would you have the Palestinians do, await the fate of the Red Indians?

Right, the Zionism was a colonial project from the start; "divide & rule" method used by Israel isn't anything new, & it was made easier by the Arabs themselves who r fragmented (just like the Jews, btw) by their different religions & ethnic makeup.
That the "radically-orientated forces cemented themselves in Gaza" is no mystery: many of their foot soldiers r the decendants of displaced Palestians that have nothing to lose; Hamas became the only credible force to maintain order & capable of defending the population, unlike the corrupt & anemic PA in the W. Bank. Now both Israeli & Palestinian civilans r paying the price.
There is the Zion NP in the state of Utah, founded by the Mormons- perhaps creating a new enclave there for the Israelis will solve the problem! also Australia's interior needs people & development- the Israelis could turn that desert into a garden & the few Aboriginees still there can be moved again, if need be.
