Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
So other than needing more powerful engines, is there anything else the il-112v lacks? Did the imbalance issues requiring 2 tonnes of ballast in the nose get fixed?

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
The aircraft is intended to replace the An-26 range of aircraft, as well as the Yak-40 and Let L-410 aircraft.
The Il-112 has similar weight and dimensions to the An-26 but has a larger cabin cross section that allows it to carry 44 equipped soldiers instead of 38 in the Antonov.
The engines are rather more fuel efficient which doubles its ferry range and the crew is reduced from 6 to 2 with modern avionics and systems and equipment on board.
According to Wiki the first prototype had an 800kg weight reduction and the second two prototypes lost a further 2,000kgs lighter, so the next prototype should be 2,800kgs lighter than the first model before it flew.
The so called under powered engines are about 600hp more powerful than the engines fitted to the An-26 which has a MTOW about 4 tons heavier than this plane.

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
A prototype of the Il-112V military transport aircraft crashed during a flight from Zhukovsky to Kubinka for the Army-2021 exhibition. Preliminary information – the cause of the crash is a fire of the right engine. The health of the crew is unknown
I can't guarantee the truthfulness of the information, but if it's true, then it's just terrible...
UPD: Rostec is creating a commission with the involvement of aircraft research institutes and factories to investigate the causes of the Il-112V accident.
There were 3 crew members in the plane, most likely they were killed. After the fire of the right engine, the plane tilted and crashed right nose into the ground....
UPD2: The commander of the Il-112B crew was the Honored test pilot Hero of Russia Nikolai Kuimov, reports UAC.

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
Doesn't it have fire estinguishers for engines ?
I guess they could also put ejectable seats like on fighter on transport aircraft.
That's a big fire.
RIP to the crew.

Wow tragic news indeed - esp the loss of two test pilots within a week. RIP

RIP.
I hope they don't cancel the Il-112 project after this tragedy.
Wasn't this the only flying prototype yet built?

That´s what prototypes are build for. See what can go wrong and how to prevent it in the end product.
Only problem I see is th slow production of prototypes. UAC/MoD should accalerate the program!

There are 3 I believe. But they most likely won't cancel the project after a single crash (if that was the case, the development of many planes that exist today would have been halted). The only setback to this program is currently the evaluation of what happened and the loss of the test pilot. If anything, a crash would actually urge the design and development team to work harder. Nevertheless, test pilots have always been heroes to me. It's indeed a tragedy.
Also, I read somewhere that the pilots were steering the plane (which was flying at low alt, low speed) away from residential areas, so parachutes would hv been useless here.

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
This may slow down the Il-112 program. The Russian army urgently needs a replacement for the An-26, which have already exhausted their resource, but continue to fly.owais.usmani wrote:RIP.

Now three more planes are being built, one of them is close to completion of construction, if I am not mistaken

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
It came down quite suddenly. Maybe the pilots, recognising their fate, rather than bringing it down in a residential area, spotted a clear space and went for instant death rather than burning alive in a wreck whilst saving other's lives. However it happened it was a sad end. RIP.

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
Watching the video I got the same impression, they clearly flew the plane as far away from the residential area as soon as that engine caught fire so there wouldn't be any collateral damage on the ground.Lennox wrote:Also, I read somewhere that the pilots were steering the plane (which was flying at low alt, low speed) away from residential areas, so parachutes would hv been useless here.

Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
I was wrong. Two aircraft were built. The first plane crashed, and the second was used for static tests. Two more prototypes are being built, not three. And they are still quite far from the completion of the constructionRussian_Patriot_ wrote:This may slow down the Il-112 program. Re: Il-112V/Il-212 light military transport
From watching the video, appears there is a balance problem as plane got inverted real fast and these planes have to be able to fly with just 1 engine while realizing that the fire was pretty intense with wing structure damage no doubt... however no aeronautic engineer so will leave it to others.

This is ominous development for this program. Bad sign... Russia keeps struggling big time with new products/projects...

Not Really
mr_hd wrote:This is ominous development for this program. Bad sign... Russia keeps struggling big time with new products/projects...
Given the absolute disaster of the 1990s, Russia is hardly struggling "big time" with new projects as witnessed by its roughly 10 year lead in hypersonic technology. The best and the brightest of Russian mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and software developers are the best in the world bar none. The problem is post 1990s/early 2000's the bench is not particularly deep. There was such an outflow of talent that secondary priority areas didn't exactly get the cream of the crop of new graduates. On top of that, there was rampant academic fraud up until about 2005 wherein one could "buy" their diploma or academic credentials pretty easily.

Your statement is contradictory. Would you have them churn out scores of these clearly unsafe planes before the issues are sorted out? That was a pretty serious fire, likely took out the control surfaces. Looks like they deployed flaps, they deployed assymetrically and it was game over.

This is tragic yes - no doubt but need i remind you that shit happens. A few years back the Superjet 100 prototype crashed but that didn't stop the program from being a success. This is just one of many examples.

Ukrainians will be having a field day with this.
RIP to the pilots. Unfortunately this happens.
Mind you, why don't they test fly it as a drone first?
