Last new member was months ago so I assume it would have cooled off

You can switch it back on now (or periodically allow new members to keep it manageable for mods)

If noobs misbehave then ban them (you can set up stricter rules for members below certain post count or time on forum)

It may be messy but if nobody new comes entire forum will die off gradually

I think we should allow again for a while and see what happens. We do need to attract new views and expertise, even if we don't agree with some of it.

Also is it possible to give the banned members names? Sometimes wonder if when posters vanish it is enforced or they just find something else to do.

So we have had a few members say yes to opening up new members... even if for a specific period...

I am happy with that... I will give you guys a couple of days to say no or just put your opinion and then I will open the forum for a period and see how we go.

Considering the political sphere in Europe I am against "Open Borders" policies, but fortunately this is a forum and we should open it to see who wants to enter.

Unlike the European borders I can open and close them at the push of a button, and those already in can be denied access just as easily if necessary.

I will try to not let the power go to my head... Embarassed

OK, it has been a couple of days and all the responses so far are positive, so I am going to open the forum to new members.

To start with it will be open for two weeks, if it is abused it will be closed again.

If it is not abused, then I will simply keep it open.

If we do have problems there is an alternative... I think I read in the Admin forum that general membership can be closed as it is now, but new members can be created via invitation, which could be plan B where if anyone approaches a current member wanting to join their details can be forwarded to me and I invite them.

Obviously definitely plan B as it would just be more work for us and assumes a few things as well...

Give me a little time to get it open properly, but it shouldn't take too long opening up as of now.

    Should be working now.

There is an approval component that allows the admin to approve new users to activate new accounts.

At the moment I have used user activation and we will see how it goes.

If we have problems I can change it to activate approved by me accounts only, but it sounds like a lot of messing around because I doubt I will recognise the usernames anyway.

Play nice to new members and remember you need to introduce yourself in your own new thread in the Members rules and introductions thread.

Garry the adds shown on the forum shows some porn. IMO it's automatic but it's not really appropriate for such a website.

Don't want to embarrass Lsos, but normally the system generates advertising based on the users cookies, so if you visit Amazon a lot then Amazon adverts will appear on here.

I remember a US senator complaining about porn being advertised on a site he was supposed to be accessing and so it was investigated (he wanted that site closed because he was offended) but it turned out the site in question used an automatic advert system that based the selection of adverts on the users cookies and the senators son allegedly was using daddies computer to look at stuff he was not supposed to... he was clearing out the cache and history and the system that selects the advert content obviously used some other information. Well the senator blamed his son... but who knows right...

I will look in to it, and apologies for any offence regarding anything you might have seen.

Don' worry ! That's not top quality

    Makes it worse IMHO. Embarassed

I have found a list of allowable advert websites but the list is enormous.

Lsos could you please move your mouse arrow over the advert and right click and choose "copy link location" to get the website address of the offending website and post that into a reply to me on this thread so I can try to track down the source and eliminate it.

Note it should look like something like this:

    { https://adclick.g.doubleclick.net/aclk?sa=L&ai=Cbrv3XrOsX-_0OavjyAPfqJnAAseDkpBc_cXf-PkEwI23ARABIABgq-SzhfgoggEXY2EtcHViLTQ0MjE1OTMwODg1NjM2MTnIAQngAgCoAwGqBJYCT9BncTC66RR0Jj3CrpvD2fQVNVx-3AEMRzumM7uz7dlfJpQ3ZvFLj8Zn1I4XqBmCPIUrTrn0sX-6rQ2to9QUi5ZNPeIae5HYuW2C39DPl9E9v6VVDkO11vmUv1nnM4s0Biep3K5I6Ui_yX6koKKZvebMKOPCzcM8pWUCi3KrNwuNd3As5cVd8I6gF87OXzlQ8So7yiufyw-Y35812yS2pYhOLoambrU9_Bd0G6Kk9X3sanZEDwIuTxS8uL3MePW_JPKusVInWTIzQfZFePeX6npKjMA-ai13VWZsf8c1W5eP7xEqHVK7xppQLs33YUgS1CZS22A_KTdtYXhzCoRS3lRAPW0STj8TajgUa_DEmIOKAZu9P4HgBAGABrGew__MurKINKAGIagHpr4bqAfw2RuoB_LZG6gH7NUbqAeW2BuoB-TgG6gHm5exAqgHwtob2AcA0ggFCIBhEAH6CwIIAYAMAQ&num=1&sig=AOD64_286Xtu3h3vxe8UUBp4_tOCGnPMdw&client=ca-pub-4421593088563619&adurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsin.creativecdn.com%2Fclicks%3Fid%3D20201112_FpSR0NX87ZRLEyy273Nx%26tdc%3Dsin%26tk%3Dqe1SlldiQgqX9uKHklkCIvQ9MhfNGiY8tFi96ohnoB0r6OGNRfTBYDBf_Lp5n0-LxL8Kwfdqa9MQzMhM1CEWMMqob0e9WURnSufRm27NFa3EXLVjZFfSjelnOD_Cy0YQNz7A6w8oFMtyPQKTrxTBVDt_OAlzijIUflPy4geefbEnqwHA2Wvhn6r_BSQni9XBBuuNN6nFPT0vIRokRRiVYAF6TvchhShBIk5Qk8671_mFKwuZ0K6i8_4bwL-Vd5DQY0aijMz85euXDErwNic2lPlzIZaGiWSZuMzXf8o-ZU9AD2i15vqcwhRBU-klaJmw-0AW57izqKU7uPZ4iqN7lhagwPq3Z_f7mDw9d1vn73s9Ps2vKnElKyKahmlXQdfm1Xx_2x2Ng3x_yFXI6Lb9uP800QazgcBMYQbo8Q3iNBIKxCRzFiXEMRBJE4kQJwZ4}

But I should be able to use it to find what website is linking there and see if I can remove it.

I actually started watching a serie on streaming which shows lit of pop ups when you start the players which also contains porn.

I'll try to clean my cookies.

It's not really a problem for me but every time I see such adds I think some kids will see it too. Google clearly doesn't care and let everyone see them.. there is no moderation.

That's why I think websites should ask google not to share such BS.

    I have an existential question:

why do my "points" keep coming and going?

Is this some sort of "warning" of sorts? If it is, I have no clue for what reason, so it really is not going to help correcting any mistake I could have done...

I should add I was not accusing you of anything, but since I was made admin I only get adverts for this forum to buy extra bits and pieces to expand and probably make them more money I suspect.

I don't even remember the adverts I used to get. If you get an advert from a website you visit occasionally for shopping it helps this forum if you click on it in this forum because it creates income to support keeping this forum free basically.

why do my "points" keep coming and going?

I honestly don't know what they are for... I will have a look.

OK, I have found some information on points... you get points for posting, and creating threads, the number of friends you have, the number of messages in your profile and other such things.

As far as I can work out it seems to be rather meaningless to be honest.

I would also add that I recently got an automatic email asking to be a friend of a member... when I clicked on the link in the email it took me to a part of this site I don't think I have visited in quite a few years... there were a lot of friend requests... which I accepted of course... sorry to those who asked years ago and got no reply... I was not ignoring you.

Also a further reminder, if you need to talk to me about anything I prefer PM or private messaging... I notice those indicators straight away so it will be responded to much faster than a message left on my profile page which I don't spend much time on at all normally.

Garry while I am not an expert on backlinks and SEOs, I will be happy to click those adverts if it helps this forum. Furthermore, if there are any other ways in which I can help to create income for this forum, please do let me know.

AFAIK you don't need to buy anything from the linked adverts... just clicking on them and opening up their page should generate traffic that gives us credit and helps pay for the site use.
