Re: French Navy: News
French shipyard CMN has just released a video showing its Ocean Eagle trimaran patrol vessel during sea trials in extreme weather conditions (Sea State 5). Thanks to its design, the Ocean Eagle 43 demonstrates exceptional stability. CMN confirmed in September 2013 the signing of a major export contract with Mozambique. The contract includes the delivery of three Ocean Eagle 43 trimaran patrol vessels, three HSI 32 interceptors and eighteen fishing vessels for a total of twenty-four ships. According to the French shipyard, The Ocean Eagle 43 is a revolutionary concept with exceptional performance designed to meet the needs of maritime surveillance and security. It is the result of a fruitful collaboration between CMN, naval architect Nigel Irens, ProLarge and SeaTeam Aviation companies, two small businesses specialized in logistics and operational projects at sea.
The Ocean Eagle 43 is a compact high-performance multifunction vessel that is suited to protect coastal areas, strategic offshore infrastructures. It can also conduct electronic warfare and intelligence missions through the use of 300 Kg class VTOL UAV (such as the SCHIEBEL S100 Camcopter). The first Ocean Eagle 43 is set to be delivered to the Navy of Mozambique in early 2016 following training of the crew. While the vessels for Mozambique will be delivered without weapons, the Ocean Eagle 43 may be fitted with self-defense capabilities consisting in a 20 mm or 30 mm remote weapons station plus two 12.7 mm machine guns with 360° coverage. A ramp at the stern allows the rapid deployment and recovery of a 7 meters RHIB.
The OCEAN EAGLE 43 offers an unmatched cost to performance ratio:
» 3,000 nautical miles autonomy at 20 knots
» Top speed of 30 knots sustainable over a distance of 1,000 nautical miles
» Limited crew of 7 sailors
» Accomodations for 8 additional Special Forces

The fate of the wing of aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle after his departure from the Middle East
Jean-Dominique Merchet in his article «Porte-avions:? Va-t-on débarquer le groupe aérien», located in the French newspaper "Le Point", wonders what will become with the air group of the only French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle: left it in the Middle East and continue to strike at the "Islamic state", or return with it to Toulon. A source in the French Navy argues that there is no question, as the aircraft carrier aircraft may need to be on their way home for some time to patrol the waters not far from Libya.
1. The French Air Force seems to have difficulty in order to allocate more than 12 aircraft (six in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates) for the operation "Chammal" against the Islamic State. Although the French Government speaks of "strengthening the fight" against the IG, the future care of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle with the theater will greatly reduce the number of French aircraft in the theater - from 38 to 12 units. And Air France will have a good reason to "borrow" from the Navy fighter Dassault Rafale M, which will operate from the ground airfields.
2. Since 2017 the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will be decommissioned in the 18 months to carry out repairs in Toulon. At this time, carrier-based aircraft fleet French Navy can work together with the US Navy, but the General Staff of the French Armed Forces expects to use them with ground airfields for combat missions. Something similar happened in 2008 when the Navy Dassault Super Etendard attack aircraft were stationed at the airport of Kandahar (Afghanistan).

Third FREMM Delivered to the Navy
The Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) on March 16, 2016 authorized the hand-over of the frigate “Languedoc,” the third multi-mission frigate (FREMM) to be delivered to the Navy.
The FREMM program is managed by the Organisation for Joint Armaments Cooperation (OCCAR), in cooperation with Italy.
The new ship will continue the renewal of the French navy’s frigate component with eight ships that will form the backbone of the surface fleet. The FREMM, designed, developed and maintained by DCNS, will be the first European frigates to operate naval cruise missiles.
The first two frigates already delivered, “Aquitaine” and “Provence,” recently accompanied and escorted the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle during Operation Chammal operation.
The FREMM frigates are stealthy vessels of a new generation, and are versatile, tough and flexible to use, with a high degree of automation and an optimized workforce to crew.
Its main mission is the dominance of maritime operations areas; precision deep strike with the naval cruise missile; anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare; crisis prevention; support of force projection operations.
Its weapon system includes the Cayman Marine multirole shipboard combat helicopter, with a particularly developed. anti-submarine warfare capability. The FREMM-Caiman combination thus represents a leap forward in the field of underwater combat capability. The FREMM frigates are also equipped with the ECUME, the new tactical commando boat.
The first six frigates will be delivered to the Navy by mid-2019 and will conduct predominantly anti-submarine warfare missions, while the last two frigates, to be delivered in 2021 and 2022, will have a primary air-defense mission.
The multi-mission frigate program supports thousands of French employees. Until 2022, the achievement of FREMM will provide a very significant share of DCNS activities (mainly on its site of Lorient) and of many of its subcontractors, mostly SMEs.
Regarding export, two frigates have already been sold and delivered, respectively to Morocco and Egypt. Several other nations have expressed interest in the innovative concept of FREMM.

France receives first B2M-class vessel
France has received its first new multi-mission ship (Bâtiment Multi-mission - B2M) from shipbuilder Kership, the French defence procurement agency (DGA) announced on 29 March.
d'Enrecastaux is the first of three B2M vessels ordered in later 2013 from Kership, a joint venture between the Piriou shipyard and DCNS.
The vessels are being constructed to support sovereignty missions in the French overseas territories. They are designed to be able to conduct maritime surveillance, force projection, logistics, counter-trafficking and humanitarian assistance roles, among others. The 2,300 tonne B2M vessels have a crew of 20, can be armed with two 12.7x99 mm (.50 cal) machine guns, and have a maximum speed of 15 kt and an endurance of 30 days.
The home port of d'Entrecastaux will be Noumea in French Caledonia. The second ship, Bougainville , will be based in Papeete in French Polynesia with Champlain , the third vessel, to be based in Port des Galets in Reunion Island. The French Navy plans to have them sailing at least 200 days per year.
As part of an update to France's military planning law a decision was made in May 2015 to build a fourth B2M. The contract for its construction is expected to be signed in 2017, with the ship destined to be based in Fort de France, Martinique.

French Navy retires Super Etendard
French Navy retires Super Etendard
France's naval aviation (Aéronavale) officially retired the Super Etendard Modernisé (SEM) maritime strike aircraft from service on 12 July.
The final five aircraft, which were flying with the Flottille 17F, will be kept in long-term storage, although the possibility of seeing them back in flight seems unlikely.
The SEM entered service in 1978 with the French Navy and later benefited from several upgrade programmes, culminating with the Standard 5, which was implemented on 35 aircraft. The Aéronavale started working on the withdrawal of the SEM several years ago when it was decided to stop maintaining an industrial maintenance-level capability. In October 2015 eight airframes were still available and they were all embarked on the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle , together with 18 Dassault Rafales, for Operation 'Chammal' against the Islamic State. Three aircraft reached their end of life when Charles de Gaulle returned to Toulon in March, leaving only five in flying condition.
The SEM's withdrawal leaves the service with a 100% Rafale M fighter force. Of the 48 aircraft delivered since 2001, four have been lost through accidents. Three are flying in St Dizier (together with Armée de l'Air aircraft) within the Rafale conversion unit and a fourth is allocated to the Hyères-based naval test centre. That leaves 40 aircraft available for Flottilles 11F, 12F and 17F, all based in Landivisiau, French Brittany. The average allocation is 12 aircraft per flottille.
Flottille 17F has already started to train its pilots and technicians on the Rafale, but the unit will not be considered fully operational before 2018. This will include the unit regaining its nuclear strike capability with the ASMP-A missile: a capability lost from the SEM over the last decade.
An all Rafale fleet will greatly ease operations on board Charles de Gaulle . The navy aims to embark two flottillas at the same time, with the third one remaining in Landivisiau for training and recovery.

Re: French Navy: News
Look promising French frigate FTI
On passing in Le Bourget near Paris international naval exhibition Euronaval 2016 French shipbuilding association DCNS and the General Directorate of Arms (Direction Generale des Armaments - DGA) of the Ministry of Defence of France October 18, 2016 with the participation of French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian made a formal presentation "Blueprint" of long-term "average" French Navy frigate program for Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire (FTI)
The "average" frigate of the French Navy for FTI was announced in the "White Paper on Defense" in 2013 and was officially implemented in 2015. Preliminary design and vehicle systems have been approved by the Investment Committee of the Government of France October 5, 2016, to determine the cost of the program at 3.8 billion euros. Development is carried out jointly ship DGA, DCNS and the group Thales. Anticipated construction of five frigates such as FTI, which should replace the 5 French Navy frigates of La Fayette type. Thus, it was supposed to support the strength of the French Navy frigates of 15 units - two ships of Horizon project, eight ships of FREMM type and five types of FTI (even after the sale of a French frigate FREMM Egypt in 2015. These plans are in limbo). To reduce the FTI should be "middle" class frigate displacement of 4000 tons, smaller in size than the currently constructed 6,000-ton frigates FREMM.
Issuance of a contract for the construction of the lead ship association DCNS is expected in the first quarter of 2017 with delivery to the fleet in 2023, and commissioning of all five units - in 2030, although according to some French commentators these terms are overly optimistic.
Promulgated on Euronaval 2016 "conceptual design" frigate FTI demonstrates futuristic appearance the ship is relatively similar in architecture to the new USS Zumvalt c "talus" "vodoprorezayuschey" bow. This architecture DCNS marketed under the brand BELH @ RRA c offer an export version of the frigate for the international market, where the French manufacturer intended them to repeat the market success of the family frigate La Fayette.
It is reported that the frigate FTI should have a displacement (apparently standard) 4250 tons, a length of 122.25 m. The combined power plant Combined Diesel and Diesel scheme (CODAD) should include four diesel engines and four diesel generators with a total capacity of 32 MW, providing speed full speed to 27 kt and a cruising range of economic progress up to 5000 miles. The ship should be placed 150 people, including 110 full-time crew and air group of 15 people. The hangar is provided basing class helicopter NH90 helicopter and a drone. The frigate will also carry a small boat bystrospuskaemy special purpose ECUME and semi-rigid boats.
Project arms ship FTI includes two chetyrehkonteynernye launchers of anti-ship missile systems MBDA Exocet MM40 Block 3, 16 vertical launchers, Sylver A50 for anti-aircraft missiles Aster 30 (can accommodate longer UVLM Sylver A70 instead of A50), 76-mm universal artillery installation Oto Melara ( Leonardo) Super Rapid (with the possibility of placing instead of 127-mm artillery installation), two 20-mm remote-controlled artillery Nexter Narhwal, several 12.7-mm machine guns, two twin 324-mm torpedo tubes and two launchers protivotorped.
Electronic weapons of frigate FTI consists of an integrated radar system Thales SeaFire with four fixed antennas AFAR, automated command and control system series DCNS SETIS, two electro-optical surveillance systems Sagem PASEO, podkilnoy CEO Thales Kingclip Mk II and towed CEO Thales CAPTAS-4. The ship will be equipped with advanced EW and RTR. Part of the range of radio equipment has to be selected.

France takes delivery of its 5th FREMM
PARIS – The Directon Générale de l’Armement took delivery July 18 the fifth multi-mission frigate, marking a step toward an eight-strong fleet which will be the “backbone” of the French Navy, the defense procurement office said.
“The Directon Générale de l’Armement (DGA) received July 8 2018 the Brétagne frigate, the fifth FREMM multimission frigate for the French Navy,” the ministry said in a July 25 statement.
This antisubmarine version of the Franco-Italian cooperative FREMM program will renew the French frigate fleet with “eight ships which will make up the backbone of the surface fleet,” the ministry said.
The FREMM frigate, designed, developed and built by Naval Group, the French shipbuilder, is the only European warship which is armed with the naval cruise missile, the ministry said.
