    R-27 is still good for peace time air patrols and air exercises.

    Real weapons have a very restricted life period on the pylon, so it doesn't make sense to take up the latest and the best unless you are training to fire a new missile specifically. Older missiles near their expiry make rather more sense as they need to be disposed of anyway and you are still firing a real missile rather than just a simulation.

    But for planes like Su-30SM and Su-35 equipped with Bars-R or Irbis radar, this old missile is practically degrading their combat capabilities and they need in their armament more capable missiles as RVV-AE (R-77 type) and RVV-BD (R-37 type) missiles to exploit their capabilities in full.

    Actually I would disagree there as the R-27E models had extended effective range and a variety of guidance options that make them different enough from R-77 and indeed R-37M to be useful... especially in the context of training where the missile wont make it home anyway.

    New planes simply need new armament and crews have to become familiar with them.

    Using real weapons 95% of the time with the real weapon 5% of the time is normally good enough.

    Perhaps it's possible the fielded r27s are still 1980s designs that are continually being refurbished, but are otherwise technologically some 25+ years old.

    All the more reason to stop coddling them and wasting money keeping them in stocks, and to instead use them widely for training so pilots get experience and old stocks get used up.

    Russia's Irkut to Deliver 60 Combat Jets to Russian Military in 2015: Company

    MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Irkut aircraft maker will deliver 30 Su-family fighter jets and 30 Yak-130 combat trainers to the Russian Armed Forces, the company said Monday.

    "The year 2015 will be a record-setting year for us as we will deliver 60 aircraft, including 30 of the Su-family and 30 Yaks," head of Irkut, Oleg Demchenko, said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television.

    The company is expected to deliver 54 combat jets to the Russian military by the end of 2014.

    This is better than what I expect for Irkut to deliver next year (24 to 26 Su-30SM planes max.). thumbsup This will most probably be 24 Su-30SM for full regiment for RuAF and 6 Su-30SM to equip fill squadron for RuNAVY in Eysk. russia


    When I look more on pictures of Su-30 planes, I find something interesting. Su-30SM have the same round data link antennas as Su-35, which seems to be newer more capable complex.

Its objective is to protect the area located near the state border and stretching from Baikal to Amur, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the head of press-service of Eastern Military District, Colonel Alexnader Gordeev.

    Su-30SM is the 4++-generation multi-role super-maneuverable fighter able to attack five ground and air targets simultaneously and track up to 15 targets.     I am venturing to guess that the Russian domestic version is therefore different from the ones that they export to Vietnam, China, India among other countries because these export models do not have holographic HUD & LANTIRN, apart from AESA radars, making it almost impossible for these aircraft to undertake terrain-hugging flights something that the F-15E, Typhoon and Rafael can do very easily.

    The Su-24 has no holographic HUD, nor Lantirn, nor an AESA radar, yet it manages to fly low and fast routinely...

    Even a basic radar can scan terrain ahead and send flight commands to the autopilot to manouver to avoid terrain features by flying over them or around them.

    I am not sure what he means by Holographic HUD, since Su-30 has various type of HUDS (Thalse produces the one for Su-30MKI as example). Russia gets their own HUD. terrain movement (or avoiding, whatever it is called) is done via the radar does the mapping of the terrain, and the computer then does the autoflying through the terrain. Su-34 apparently has the most advanced variant of it as its radar is very good at ground tracking (hence why it is a strike aircraft, as its air to air tracking/engaging is much weaker). Things like Domacles pod is not meant for terrain navigation. It is meant for tracking and engaging ground targets at decent ranges and have visual image which is then sent to the pilot to launch guided munitions that way.

    Su-24 also has a HUD, so I dunno what anyone is talking about specifically.

    Holographic HUD doesn't have an influence for low altitude flying. It is about LANTIRN, which have two pods. One pod have FLIR and laser designator to use with LGBs. The other pod have terrain following radar, which allow low flying for F-15E and F-16 planes, which doesn't have terrain following radar in its nose as Su-24 or Tornado IDS. Su-24 and Tornado have two radars in nose cone, smaller lower one is terrain following radar and bigger upper one is search and engagement radar.

    Su-34 have modern PESA bomber radar, which include terrain following modes. Its air to air modes are not like in Bars or Irbis, but still not to be underestimated. It could still use all Russian AAMs and have a decent range. Today V004 radar in serial Su-34 is for sure modernized and more capable than V004 prototype from the nineties. They are still keeping V004 radar in secrecy and for sure they have a reason. I think this radar is far more capable than what we could think about it from few informations for prototype from nineties.

    Radars in both Su-30M2 and Su-30SM have terrain mapping modes and altitude measuring radar and GLONASS navigation, but I doubt they are as capable for low flying as Su-24 or Su-34. Anyway, I don't think this is a problem as RuAF have Su-34 for that job and Su-30 as multirole fighters will make attacks on ground targets with PGMs and than provide air protection. Even Su-34 will not use it much as it will make attacks with cruise missiles and PGMs from distance and for longer range they have to fly higher.
