Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
was going through some old army documents that i no longer need or want (currently in the process of destroying all my ex army documents etc etc), and found information on the Su-25 and it stated that the aircraft was very rugged and can use rough airfields and its very easy to service and cheap to maintain to which i think everyone knows, but the next bit surprised that it stated that if needed can be run on all types of fuel including diesel, has anyone else heard of this? the source was a military document.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Yes.
Their tanks were the same.
Obviously if you mix different fuels like petrol and diesel and kerosene and methanol and benzine it is not going to get the best fuel economy, but a flight of Su-25s operating in Europe could land on a road near a petrol station and fuel up with almost anything they had... not LPG of course...

Imagine how long it would take to fill up and SU-25 at a petrol pump..lol. You'd be there for HOURS. 3660l

Average rig truck can fill 1000l up and no it doesn't take hours. It takes 5-10mins.

Depends if the station is equipped with a truck pump, if not its 50l a min.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
You could take the pipes from four different pumps clustered together and use them at once.
The diesel pumps at our stations have a turbo button for trucks to pump at higher rates....

I think those are older variants, but still awesome nonetheless!

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Should really be in another thread but we don't see 32 Su-25 together very often.
Chris Biggers@CSBiggers
Imagery of Luninets shows that additional Su-25 have arrived. 32 Frogfoot are visible up from 15 on 4 February. (Imagery: @planet)
A few weeks back.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Didn't they show a new fuelling truck that could fuel a dozen aircraft at once at high speed for dispersed operations away from airfields?

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
RIA Novosti publishes a video with a Russian Su-25SM3 attack aircraft, which was successfully landed by its pilot on the airfield after receiving damage from the fire of the Ukrainian MANPADS.

This is not Su-25SM3, this is non modernized original Su-25.

I used built-in translation service in Microsoft Edge for the source. But I think initial news mentioned SM3.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Those planes are irreplaceable, the fact they can be operated at low level and just eat up MANPADS
Means it is the most effective vehicle in CAS missions where mid and short range radar guided systems are not a threat
Actually coupled with strike bombers, the shturmovik has a lot of reserve for service time

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
They certainly need to follow on with a replacement aircraft that is not just a medium fighter adapted to the role...

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Honestly, there is no need to replace the Su-25.
They could simply modernize it and build new ones that have a lot more advanced avionics in a form of AI to assist the pilot, and possibly more efficient jet engines to it. Otherwise, the rest of the jet is more than good enough as is.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
The losses during the war on both side show they have no real future unless they use stand off weapons.
Drones with precision guided munitions will do a better job without risking pilots life.
For bigger missions they have cruise missiles and su-34.

Something like that will be good as a remote-controlled drone. Armored, subsonic, flying low, and brimming with weapons
But I suspect this is the Su-25s last flight
Good unit. Just past its due. With the type of missions its flying and the altitudes its working at, the pilot has no chance of ejecting if the plane is shot down or goes out of control, the only thing you can try for is a crash landing but that's a low probability.
If there's an option to modernize them into an unmanned variant, that would be superb. Otherwise give them to Syria, Tajikistan and the Central African Republic - they'll be great for them.
I would say the same for the Mi-24 series, but I think they still have a role in the VDV as combined gunships and troop carriers, and maybe the modern variants for long range missiles and Syria-type duties for another decade or so.
For the Sturmovik role, Sturmovik drones are the future

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
How can you say that when su25 took manpads where su34 could not?
Su25sm3 with MAWS from Vitebsk is a survivable aircraft , and with the sol25 system it can fire long range munitions
To me su25sm3 with vitebsk is an ideal CAS plane which is highly survivable
If we see the sortie rate for su25 in this war , it's probably highest of fix3d wing aircraft
Ergo , it flew many missions and survived them while delivering munitions on target
This is su25 basic we talk about
So what kind of talk is this about su25 last fight

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Yes it survived a manpad impact. But plenty of su-25 were destroyed, even in NK they got downed (armenian or azeri I don't remember).
Ka-52 also had self protection systems yet they got hit. Those systems aren't protecting 100%.
The aircraft can inflict a lot of damages but it takes heavy loses too. Drones can do most risky mission with better survivability and hunt AD systems. Then su-34 can launch kh-31 to take out radars and bigger system and bombing once no AD is left. It is also a supersonic aircraft and can evade more easily enemy fighters.
Ka-52 also proved to be better plateform.
A-10 and su-25 won't be replaced IMO.

Su-25SM3 will live out its days. Maybe see action again.
Would be interesting to see the after action and sorted reports, or any statistics post the war.
But work on an unmanned version or a drone with the same flight profile and capabilities should begin IMHO.
