German submarines were equipped with Russian navigation systems
28.3.2021
German military submarines are equipped with navigation devices developed by a Russian company, Bild am Sonntag reported.
According to the newspaper, Berlin began to cooperate with the Russian company "Transas" in 2005: under Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, about 100 ships of the German Navy were equipped with new navigation systems. Later, the authorities chose the Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 system for modern German submarines U 35 (in operation since 2015) and U 36 (since 2016), RIA Novosti reports .
According to the newspaper, Transas was founded in St. Petersburg in 1990 and operates in both the civilian and military sectors. At the same time, the material notes that in 2018 the company was bought by the Finnish company Wartsila, but the arms division remained with Russia. "Due to close ties with the Russian security apparatus, this part of Transas, according to security experts, is in the focus of Western intelligence services," the article says.
In response to a request from the publication about whether the Transas devices could pose a threat to German submarines, the German Defense Ministry said that "the government is making great efforts to ensure the security of IT, cyber and crypto assets under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense."
Recall that in August 2018, the American edition of the National Interest called the state of the German Navy a shame for the richest country in Europe.

Yeah, but their navigation systems seem to work... unlike Norwaywegian and US nav systems that make them run into oil tankers and cargo ships in the dark.
I am surprised Transas was sold to a Finnish company... sounds like a CIA scam...

From this map you will find lots of countries in Africa dealing with Russia on military matters.
Obviously many deserve a thread of their own, especially for a particular event like Niger currently, but most don't. So I thought it a plan to sweep the others into this thread.
What do you think?
