Russia's new-generation manned spaceship may be called Gagarin Vector or Federation

The new vehicle will service Russia’s lunar program

MOSCOW, December 25. /TASS/. The names Gagarin, that of the first man in space, Vector and Federation top the Internet shortlist of names for a new-generation manned transport spacecraft, the press service of Russia’s Energia Rocket and Space Corporation said on Friday.
"As many as 35,105 people took part in the voting," the statement said. "More than 10,000 people suggested the new spaceship to be named after Earth’s first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. Near 5,000 people voted for the Vector name, and above 3,500 for the Federation name."
Whoever has entered the eventual winning name will take the main prize, a trip to Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan to watch the launch of a Soyuz manned cargo spaceship to the International Space Station next spring.
Russia’s space agency, Rosсosmos, will announce the winner on January 15.
The new vehicle will service Russia’s lunar program. The ship, accommodating up to four crew, will be able to stay in independent flight for up to 30 days and up to a year when docked to the space station. The ship’s weight in orbiting flight will be 14.4 tonnes, and 19 tonnes in a lunar mission.

Conducted the first test of a new spacecraft "Federation"

MOSCOW, 5 may — RIA Novosti. Specialists RSC "Energia" has held the first tests of the elements of human-machine interface on a unique stand ergonomic testing piloted transport ship (PTK) a new generation of "Federation", is spoken in the message of the Corporation.
Stand ergonomic testing with high accuracy simulates the jobs of the crew on the command deck of the ship and the working conditions of the crew, including with the use of rescue suits.

"In the framework of the tests performed the tests of different management information formats for the crew of the "Federation", after the analysis of the results of which decisions will be made on whether to implement those or other elements of the interface in the new vehicle, information zones on the displays of the astronauts", — stated in the message.

Working off of elements of human-machine interface is on the basic algorithms of crew performance and all phases of flight – launch, elimination, Autonomous flight, rendezvous and docking and flying in a part of a space station or a lunar orbital transfer complex.
Manned transport spacecraft of new generation developments of RSC "Energia" is designed to deliver people and cargo to the moon and a space station in earth orbit.
The spacecraft is reusable, its design incorporates advanced technologies, some of which have no analogues in world cosmonautics. In particular, the return apparatus of PTK will be performed using new materials, and have a reusable connecting unit. Modern avionics will allow to solve more effectively the problem of rendezvous and docking ship, will increase the safety of the crew during launch and descent to the Ground.

The number of crew PTK will be up to four people. In the Autonomous flight mode, the ship can be up to 30 days, in flight in the orbital station to one year. The total mass of the spacecraft during the flight to the space station will be equal to 14.4 tonnes (19 tons during the flight to the moon), the weight of the recovery vehicle 9 tons. The ship length — 6.1 meters. For launching craft into orbit is planned to use the carrier rocket heavy class "Angara-А5П"

so no more option for 6 persons?  Shocked

It was dropped quite a while ago. Originally idea was to be able to carry full complement of crew to ISS with 6 man version and to have 4 man version for deep space missions.

6-man version was abandoned because there is almost never a need to carry entire ISS crew in one go other than emergency evac but if that happens they would simply split into two or more groups and board separate craft. 6-man version would also need to use specialized seats for every crewmember that have to be custom built in advance like on Soyuz which makes it very complicated to make quick changes in crew roster or even seating order. 4-man version will be using adjustable seats that are slightly larger but way more practical.

    "Oryol" next-generation manned spacecraft - Page 2 9705833153_ae5f37bf11_o

4-man version also has enough room to install toilet in separate space. This is done next to entry hatch since that part is not used once crew boards the ship. Toilet system is taken out of storage, installed on the wall and plastic screen slides over to give users privacy. This may sound irrelevant but it is huge issue up there. It is in the video I linked several posts earlier.

Life support can operate lot longer on version with fewer crewmen.

There is also the fact that ISS will be getting scraped soon and that new space stations are unlikely to have larger crew complement than 6 any time soon.

SpaceX was pitching 7-man capsule to NASA but this was just advertising trick to "reduce" cost of launch per person. While it is cheaper "per person" it still does not change price of launch itself and NASA also does not need to send that many people up there at once.
And just imagine 7 people cramped in the ship with the same size and internal space as Federation. It would make Soyuz look spacious...Very Happy

This all does not mean that they cannot build 6-man (or even more) "life-boat" version some day but that might be done only after standard version is brought into use.

Voronezh plant to start producing systems for Federation spacecraft in 2017

The Federation is the next-generation reusable spacecraft, expected to enter service in 2021

VORONEZH, February 2. /TASS/. The Voronezh-based Orbita company will start serial production of equipment to be installed on Russia’s next-generation Federation manned spacecraft, the regional government’s press service said Thursday.

"In December 2016, the Rocket and Space Corporation Energia (RKK Energia) has approved the first stage of works to create electricity circuits for the new Russia manned spacecraft, the Federation, to replace Soyuz spacecrafts and Progress space freighters. In mid-2017, Orbita will start serial production of this equipment," the Voronezh Region government said.

The Federation is the next-generation reusable spacecraft, expected to enter service in 2021 to replace Russia’s flagship Soyuz spacecraft. It will be capable of delivering people and cargo both to the Earth orbit and the Moon.

The orbital version of the vehicle will measure 20 feet (6.1 meters) in length and weigh approximately 14.4 metric tons, the lunar version will be nearly five metric tons heavier.

The spacecraft is designed to send up to four cosmonauts to space. It will be able to operate in the autonomous regime for up to 30 days, with the possibility of staying attached to the International Space Station (ISS) for up to one year. It will be launched atop the heavy Angara-A5V and Angara-A5P rockets.

Russian space firm launches production of new spacecraft for lunar missions

The heavy Angara-A5V and Angara-A5P carrier rockets are planned for delivering the spacecraft to the orbit

KOROLYOV (Moscow Region), March 17. /TASS/. Russia’s Energiya Space Rocket Corporation has launched the production of a new spacecraft called Federatsiya (Federation) and intended for near-Earth flights and lunar missions, Energiya CEO Vladimir Solntsev said on Friday.

"It is in the active stage of work. Actually all design documentation has been issued and we are now producing separate assembly units," he said.

The first Federatsiya spacecraft is designed for a flight into a low-Earth orbit, he added.

The Federatsiya spacecraft will be 80% made of composite materials and the descent vehicle of aluminum, he said.

"The question is what the descent vehicle should be made of. Today we are working with aluminum but simultaneously it is important not only to produce the spacecraft but also to make it competitive," Solntsev said.

The spacecraft Federatsiya designed by the Energiya Space Rocket Corporation is intended for delivering humans and cargoes to the near-Earth orbit and to the Moon. Its crew will comprise up to four members. The spacecraft will have an endurance of up to 30 days and up to twelve months as part of an orbital station.

The heavy Angara-A5V and Angara-A5P carrier rockets are planned for delivering Federatsiya spacecraft into orbit. The first unmanned launch of the Federatsiya space vehicle is scheduled for 2021 and the first manned flight for late 2023.

New Russian spacecraft designed for lunar missions to be run by fail-safe computer

Humans, however, won’t be excluded from the spaceship's control system just yet

MOSCOW, March 28. /TASS/. Russia’s new spacecraft 'Federation' intended for near-Earth flights and lunar missions will be controlled by an onboard digital computer network whose failure is ruled out, Head of the Flight Test Center at Energiya Space Rocket Corporation Mark Serov told TASS.

Energiya Space Rocket Corporation is the developer of the new spacecraft Federation.

"Federation’s onboard computer system has profound redundancy and therefore the computer network’s failure is something unthinkable. There will be just few push buttons aboard (following the tradition inherited from Soyuz spacecraft, we call them the buttons of ‘especially important commands’) to activate backup power supply and restore the work of onboard computers," Serov said.

Humans won’t be excluded from the control system because otherwise they won’t be able to take charge of it when necessary, he said.

‘We support the ideology of an ‘active operator:’ the automated control process proceeds under the crew’s control and the system informs persons about all developments and makes requests for the fulfillment of tasks. The manual control mode in this spacecraft is largely envisaged for accomplishing tasks unstipulated in the automated system’s algorithms rather than for the scenario of the failure of algorithms," Serov said.

US specialists working on the Orion spacecraft are confronted with the same problems as their Russian counterparts, he noted.

"To my mind, the working space in the Federatsiya spacecraft is organized better and features modern means of reflecting information. Our colleagues have started the development of their spacecraft earlier and that is why they cannot, for example, use sensor panels in Orion because the space vehicle’s control board has already been created. We, however, started later and believe that the use of sensor technologies is a long-term trend," he said.

In his opinion, the US Orion spacecraft is the sole space vehicle that can be compared with the Federation spaceship because it is also designed for flights to the Moon.

"All comparisons with the Dragon [the spacecraft of the private company SpaceX], Starliner [a spaceship being developed by Boeing] and other space vehicles are wrongful as they are intended for the low near-Earth orbit. The statements by Elon Musk [the head of SpaceX] that he intends to deliver astronauts to the ISS [the International Space Station] and carry tourists around the Moon aboard the same spacecraft cause big doubts, for example. This is physically impossible as serious changes in the spaceship are needed for the second cosmic speed," Serov said.

Cockpit of Russia’s new spacecraft to have three touch screens

The technology will enable the crew to operate while wearing spacesuits and gloves

MOSCOW, March 29. /TASS/. The crew of Russia’s next-generation spacecraft, Federation, will control it via three touch screens and one side handle, a senior official at the Federation’s designer told TASS in an interview.

"Initially, we planned to install five monitors - one main screen, two for the commander and two for the second crew member. Later we decided that there should be one screen for each of the crew members and one main screen to be used by them jointly. All of them will be based on the touch screen technology," said Mark Serov, the head of the flight test department at the Energiya Space Rocket Corporation.

He added that RSC Energia’s technology will enable the crew to operate while wearing spacesuits and gloves.

"Any kind of gloves are suitable for our screens, there’s even no need to sew in special elements on digits. These screens were designed to operate in the conditions of vacuum and differential pressure, including in a spacewalk," Serov said.

In addition, a control handle will be placed between the seats of the commander and the second crew member for manual control.

According to Serov, the cockpit of Federation’s rival Orion currently under development by Lockheed Martin for NASA, will also be equipped with three monitors. Another rival project, Boeing’s Starliner space capsule, is expected to have two monitors and a system of manual switches and controls resembling those that can be found in a cockpit of a plane.

The spacecraft is intended for delivering humans and cargoes to the near-Earth and lunar missions. The space capsule has a life span of up to 30 days and can operate up to twelve months as part of an orbital station. It will be launched atop the heavy Angara-A5V and Angara-A5P carrier rockets. The first unmanned launch of the Federation space vehicle is scheduled for 2021 and the first manned flight for late 2023.

It's that time of the year when Zak is actually useful:

Giant Mi-26 helicopter to be used for PTK Federatsiya drop tests

In a major step toward testing full-scale systems for the PTK Federatsiya spacecraft, Russian engineers began preparations for aircraft drop tests of the ship's Return Vehicle, VA. A life-size mockup of the cone-shaped capsule was expected to be lifted by Russia's heavy Mi-26 helicopter before being dropped in mid-air in order to try out various components of the landing system for the future spacecraft.

During 2017, RKK Energia developed the drop test program in cooperation with NII Parashutostroeniya, the nation's prime developer of parachute systems for the Ministry of Defense and Roskosmos. By September, engineers were also completing the planning of the tests with the Mil MVZ, which builds Russia's Mi helicopter series, including the Mi-26, the largest serially produced vehicle in its class. The finalized test program was expected to be approved by Roskosmos and the Ministry of Defense.

Thanks. Seems to be coming along nicely....apparently, the plan is for a humanoid robot named FEDOR to pilot the first flight as a test run
