Building more tubs to patrol irrelevant regions is not going to achieve much. The US desperately wants to control the
North Sea route. If it thinks that more of its tubs will simply roll over Russia, it has another thing coming.

Navy is useless in any war with Russia so no wonder why Russia is so helpful when it comes to assisting China with naval development and not considered with USA building it's own
The more money either dump into navies the less of a threat they will be to Russia

Re: Icebreakers
US doesn't have nor won't have in decades a proper fleet for the north. Russian vessels not only go through there, they have plenty of ice breakers, air defense systems around, subs and now military bases up there.
There really isn't anything US can do. Russia's borders are already defined and US has stretched itself thin.

They can have it if they want. With Chinas road and belt, control of the oceans will be much less important. China can trade on the Eurasian continent and the Americas will be irrelevant

Aren't they planning to patrol the NSR including Russia's territorial and EEZ waters?
Funny "coast guard" they have.

The red one is Yamal, not 50 Let Pobedy, which is a bit longer.

No, thanks
Russia needs a century long break from color red, it's been way overused

Re: Icebreakers
Russia may continue to enlarge its nuclear icebreaker fleet
https://bmpd.livejournal.com/4287819.html
According to the newspaper "Sea News of Russia", after 2030, Russia could continue to build up the nuclear icebreaker fleet. Currently four icebreakers are being built: two nuclear-powered vessels of the project 22220 type "Arktika" and two vessels of the project 10510 type "Leader". The relevant proposals were sent to the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin by Rosatom. This was stated by the representative of the state corporation Mikhail Belkin during the final extended meeting of the Board of Rosmorrechflot. His words are quoted by the correspondent of "Sea News of Russia"....

Re: Icebreakers
I can see them doing this if the northern sea route becomes popular. It will be like a winter Suez Canal through Russian waters with the requisite transit fees. Very lucerative.

Re: Icebreakers
Should be good for ports along the arctic coast too for stopovers and repairs, but also as the ports where material from the far north and far east can be sent by rail to be shipped anywhere in the world...

Re: Icebreakers
AFAIK they are only currently building one of the Leader nuclear icebreakers. But yes more are planned.
Almost 70000 tons displacement ship. About as much as a carrier. Two RITM-400 315 MWt nuclear reactors.
Two Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers launched and two under construction. One active.
Hopefully Russia can start on the battlecruisers and carriers after these ships come out.

Re: Icebreakers
I think if they can combine cargo with icebreakers they can truely revolutionize the Northern sea route. Other ships can wait outside the ice until a couple of these large units can cut a path for them.

Re: Icebreakers
Two icebreakers running ahead of a long line of ships one slightly ahead of the other with the second making the path wider should be plenty.
Many Russian ships are already ice rated anyway...
There are estimates that in a few years time it will be largely ice free during summer and not very thick at all during winter...
