Russian Movies and TV Series: Empty Russian Movies and TV Series:

Post  Regular Thu Jun 13, 2013 9:25 am

Me and my wife were looking for Russian movies we could watch. Comedies, good tv shows, anything except action will go.
I know almost all Soviet cinematography, but can't say same about Russian one. Only few good comedies like Peculiarities of the
National Hunt. I found Russian action movies to be rather poor, 9rota being Okeyish, but it only made me angry as it distorted real story and made it into Hollywood nonsense.

Thanks everybody - I finally found good proxy and rutorrented good amount of movies.
Recently I've seen Blokpost and damn it was good.
Syostri was directed by Bodrov if I recall correctly. I have to check it. I loved Brat 1&2.
Zhmurki is funny. Seen it long time ago on TV. Especially laughed at the scene with black guy.

Any good Chechen war movies? I mean, real good and not the typical hollywood style? And with eng subs as well since my Russian is horrible (almost as good as my Punjabi) and my wife knows zilch as well (obviously since I doubt Russian is taught in Punjab India).

I would greatly appreciate it too.

My friend told me that he saw a Chechen movie "13" about Chechen roulette and that this French movie

is its remake or did borrow an idea from it. I could not find it but perhaps you could.

    Any good Chechen war movies?
"The Purgatory" ("Chestilishe") is a great movie about infamous Storm of Grozni at the New Year's eve (many episodes of the film is based on actual events), the only thing you should know about it is that it was paid by Berezovki who was an "oligarch" and chechen terrorist supporter (it's one of the best propaganda movies I ever saw). I contains many stupid moments (for a man, who knows something about a warfare), but still one of the best russian movies of the 90's. I think there is no english version, I'll try to find subs.
Attection: too strong for those under 21 years-old or pregnant. Very intense violance and strong language (I've warned you). I watched it in a secret when I was 12 or so and was shocked.

I you want something more positive and bit less bloody - "Grozovie vorota" ("Storm gates") is good a mini-series. "Voina" is another good film previously mentoned, still hard to see (only for me may be). There are no good films about the Chechen wars I think

Russian Movies and TV Series: Empty Star Media

Post  Walther von Oldenburg Sat Mar 07, 2015 1:58 pm

This producer deserves it's own topic here - it is good enough to be called world class.

In short - Star Media is a Russian producer of TV series, focusing mostly on historical documentary and action series but they make other productions as well.

Let's start with the classic - Soviet Storm (all videos are with ENG sub):

    WW1:

    Napoleonic wars:

    Korean war:

    History of spaceflight:

Ubit' Stalina - a fictional story about an Abwehr's plot to assassinate Stalin and NKVD efforts to prevent it:

... and more. StarMediaEN is their official channel. They upload new videos all the time.

Director Yuri Bykov started shooting the “First Time” movie about the first spacewalk
    Russian Aviaton » Tuesday March 31, 2015 02:00 MSK

Director Yuri Bykov started shooting the Russian “First Time” movie about the first spacewalk (the 50th anniversary of this spacewalk was celebrated on March 18th), RIA Novosti reports with reference to Bazelevs Company.

The movie will be shot in two stages: the first one will be started this summer in Moscow, where the exact copy of Voskhod-2 spacecraft will be built under the supervision of specialists from Energia design bureau; in the network of the second one the team will shoot the scenes of emergency landing in the snowy taiga located near Perm. Alexey Leonov (the first man to perform a spacewalk) acts as a consultant for the crew. Evgeny Mironov will act as Alexey Leonov; he is also one of the movie’s producers (together with Timur Bekmambetov). It was reported earlier that Sergey Bodrov would be chosen as the director.

“It is a hard story, which requires a special approach. And I think that Yuri Bykov is the ideal fit, because he is very much like our heroes. We didn’t want the movie to be directed by someone, who has experience in shooting ambitious movies,” Mironov told RIA Novosti.

Yuri Bykov is not only the director of this movie, but also one of its writers; he said that the story would be showed “first of all, via relations between people, the movie will not be limited by the “disaster film” format”. “For me it’s a great opportunity to reconsider my experience in shooting social movies and take a crack at the project focused on mass audience,” the director known for Mayor and Durak dramas, told RIA Novosti.

According to Bekmambetov, it was Mironov’s idea to shoot the movie about Leonov’s legendary flight. “The idea seemed interesting, but after the meeting with Leonov, where Alexey Arkhipovich spent six hours telling us the story of his amazing life, it was clear that we must shoot the movie about this man,” the producer explained. The film is based on the story of Voskhod-2 mission performed on March 18th 1965, which resulted in the Leonov’s spacewalk. The circumstances of this mission were kept secret for a long time. According to a chronicle, Leonov successfully returned to the spacecraft without any accidents, in fact he encountered a number of problems, starting from deformation of his space suit to emergency landing in manual mode.

“This story blew my mind after I saw a documentary about Alexey Arkhipovich and it was clear that the story should be shown in cinema. For me the Leonov’s story is the story of the true hero, whom modern films and books need so desperately,” Mironov said.

“Hollywood would have shot such movie long ago if this had been their victory,” he added.
