Director Yuri Bykov started shooting the Russian “First Time” movie about the first spacewalk (the 50th anniversary of this spacewalk was celebrated on March 18th), RIA Novosti reports with reference to Bazelevs Company.
The movie will be shot in two stages: the first one will be started this summer in Moscow, where the exact copy of Voskhod-2 spacecraft will be built under the supervision of specialists from Energia design bureau; in the network of the second one the team will shoot the scenes of emergency landing in the snowy taiga located near Perm. Alexey Leonov (the first man to perform a spacewalk) acts as a consultant for the crew. Evgeny Mironov will act as Alexey Leonov; he is also one of the movie’s producers (together with Timur Bekmambetov). It was reported earlier that Sergey Bodrov would be chosen as the director.
“It is a hard story, which requires a special approach. And I think that Yuri Bykov is the ideal fit, because he is very much like our heroes. We didn’t want the movie to be directed by someone, who has experience in shooting ambitious movies,” Mironov told RIA Novosti.
Yuri Bykov is not only the director of this movie, but also one of its writers; he said that the story would be showed “first of all, via relations between people, the movie will not be limited by the “disaster film” format”. “For me it’s a great opportunity to reconsider my experience in shooting social movies and take a crack at the project focused on mass audience,” the director known for Mayor and Durak dramas, told RIA Novosti.
According to Bekmambetov, it was Mironov’s idea to shoot the movie about Leonov’s legendary flight. “The idea seemed interesting, but after the meeting with Leonov, where Alexey Arkhipovich spent six hours telling us the story of his amazing life, it was clear that we must shoot the movie about this man,” the producer explained. The film is based on the story of Voskhod-2 mission performed on March 18th 1965, which resulted in the Leonov’s spacewalk. The circumstances of this mission were kept secret for a long time. According to a chronicle, Leonov successfully returned to the spacecraft without any accidents, in fact he encountered a number of problems, starting from deformation of his space suit to emergency landing in manual mode.
“This story blew my mind after I saw a documentary about Alexey Arkhipovich and it was clear that the story should be shown in cinema. For me the Leonov’s story is the story of the true hero, whom modern films and books need so desperately,” Mironov said.
“Hollywood would have shot such movie long ago if this had been their victory,” he added.
