Airborne Troops delivered in the rear of an adversary force must be fast, must have firepower in the level of other ground forces, and must have some option of survival. They are not suicide missions.

This is the reason of why the armour level of the BMD-4(M) platform is significantly above the armour level of the previous generations of Airborne Troops vehicles, and is even over the level of most of the infantry vehicles of the previous generation. Only the BMP-3 can be on par or a little above.

In the future the level of robotization in the Russian Airborne Troops wil be very important. Russia has a strong option of robotization to avoid in the future a dangerous manned use of the less armoured airborne combat vehicles:

But still, this kind of mission will not be totally unmaned, and for the new manned vehicles on the BMD-4(M) platform, a minimum armour to give them some survival option is required. This is why they raised the standards for their armour level.
