USS Montana (SSN 794) multipurpose nuclear submarine launched in USA
On March 4, 2021, the USS Montana (SSN 794) multipurpose nuclear submarine was launched at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia. The USS Montana (SSN 794) multipurpose nuclear submarine became the 21st class submarine Virginia "(" Virginia "), which was built by order of the US Navy. It is also the third of ten Block IV submarines to reduce its core maintenance periods from four to three compared to the Block III, increasing the total deployment of each ship over its lifetime. The submarine has a displacement of 7,800 tons, a length of 115 meters, a width of 10.4 meters, a draft of 9.8 meters and will be able to reach a speed of more than 25 knots when submerged. The cruising range is unlimited. Drive: S9G reactor. The tests are calculated at a depth of 244 meters. Crew of 135 people, including 15 officers. The submarine is equipped with two revolving launchers of 6 Tomahawk missile launchers.

Lawmakers aim to prevent sea-based nuclear cruise missile

The bill would prohibit research and development, production, and deployment of the missile, known as the SLCM-N
Separately on Tuesday, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., called on Biden to cancel the program as well as the submarine-launched, low-yield W76-2 warhead, fielded under Trump. They also asked Biden in a letter to “pause further development of” the controversial Ground Based Strategic Deterrent.

US Navy begins development of new SSN (X) multipurpose nuclear submarine
27 May 2021
The US Navy intends to soon get into service with a new multipurpose nuclear submarine, which in the future will replace the Virginia class submarines (SSN), which are currently in service.
According to Naval News, citing a report from the Congressional Research Service, the US Navy has already received funds to develop a new multipurpose nuclear submarine, designated SSN (X). So far, little is known about the new nuclear submarine, more and more assumptions. According to the publication, three design options for the new submarine are currently being studied.
In the first version, the new nuclear submarine will be created on the basis of Virginia class submarines, in the second - on the basis of the new generation strategic nuclear submarines of the Columbia class, and in the third - a completely new version. It is absolutely certain that the SSN (X) will be wider than the Virginia-class nuclear submarine and will approach strategic submarines in size, and its advantage will be high speed and increased stealth. According to assumptions, the new submarine may receive more modern equipment and the latest weaponincluding laser.
According to the US Navy, the first multipurpose submarine of the new project is planned to be purchased in 2031, simultaneously with another Virginia. In 2032 and 2033 fiscal years, the last four Virginias will be purchased, and from 2034, it is planned to purchase two new nuclear submarines annually, in order to increase the number of multipurpose submarines in the US by 2048. fleet to 66.
The estimated cost of one nuclear submarine of the new project is $ 5,8 billion (in 2021 prices).

Two USAYassen worth one Ford carrier, so yes, from the price of two yassen the Russian MOD could buy one Ford carrier.

What would laser on a sub be used for?

What would laser on a sub be used for?
They think to integrate the laser on the sub's mast and use it against small boats and drones ?
Sounds risky , the sub could be detected more easily .

Also it would boil the water as it travels to say nothing of losing power in the process
Weird...

Re: US Nuclear Submarine Force
There was some mention of lasers used on newer Russian subs to weaken ice so it can surface in places it would not normally be able to surface... but then it might just be the same source as the people saying they have rays to damage the brains of US diplomatic personel in Cuba and elsewhere...

It can but for the current technology it lacks the needed practical distances .
I remember one experiment of using blue GaN LD with 16 QAM-OFDM which reached 7 m under water with speed of 7GB/s and it decreases 0.9GB/s when distance increases one meter .
Chinese scientists are working on laser airborne based to detect submarines which means they can go for further depths .

We talk about hundreds of meters of penetration deep.
Not fit for communication.

Re: US Nuclear Submarine Force
Laser communications are used on satellites for secure transmissions that are difficult to intercept, but not much use underwater.
I seem to remember the Russians talking about laser systems on their icebreakers to weaken thicker ice to allow easier operations... perhaps a sub might use it to surface in places where the ice is a bit thick... maybe even to check ice thickness perhaps.

That happens when it is more important for the politicians and generals/admirals to put something into "service" then wait until everything is done properly.

Re: US Nuclear Submarine Force
Well, for a while we may notice some facts that might prove fading competence of US shipyards.
What is really exciting is the fact, that the situation reassembles the one Russian fleet faced some 20 years ago, at a peak of its devastation.
They have the same issues. The quality of anechoic cover is a reflection of the shape and condition of the chemical industry.
Russia lost literally 70+% of chemical industry capability, and put enormous effort to restore it.
It took them 20 years, remind you that some of early Bulava failures were caused by low and unsustainable quality of ... rubber parts.

Re: US Nuclear Submarine Force
It's hard to believe that the US has such problems and is losing competences in the shipbuilding industry. It is a maritime power with the largest fleet. Russia's problems at the beginning of the century and in the 90s, one can understand the collapse of the USSR and the huge crisis. Loss of shipyard specialists, many industries. Nothing like this happened in the USA. The US shipbuilding industry was one of the largest in the world and is now failing.
