The S-300V system India was offered in the 1990s has been upgraded several times since then to S-300VM and currently S-300V4 for domestic use... also Indias requirements at the time are pretty much unknown so we really don't know what they failed it on.

It is no great surprise late model Russian large SAMs have not sold well as their large numbers of radar and mobility make them rather more expensive than previous generation large SAMs and most of their post cold war client states are not that rich.

Of course now the Western attacks on Libya and attempts at Syria might make a few states realise setting up decent defences is worth the money.

S-300V didnt really failed because it wasnt trailed in the first place at India ...... S-300V did not meet the specs of intercepting BM targets higher than 30 km and India wanted double the interception altitude , Indian PAD have intercepted targets at altitude of 60 km

Yeah, and India still does not have anything remotely comparrible to S-300VM since the 90's.  Economy of India then was different than now, and the cost of S-300V was far too much, even now it is too much.

But if you know something we don't, please tell us. Otherwise, put up or shut up.

First India have nothing comparable or remotely close to S-300s. As others told.. Reason why India didn't wanted S-300v is because India was looking for a space defense system ,not an air defense system .something that could intercept ballistic missiles at very high altitude and even though S-300s can intercept medium altitude ballistic at 30k altitude they werent designed for higher space interception .  Russia S-400s in contrast were designed for that purpose . Patriot defense is the most comparable defense to S-300s ,and their ballistic missiles capabilities are way more limited its max ceiling is 20k. In IRAQ war it was said they failed to stop any soviet scuds launched at israel..

S-300V didnt really failed because it wasnt trailed in the first place at India ...... S-300V did not meet the specs of intercepting BM targets higher than 30 km and India wanted double the interception altitude , Indian PAD have intercepted targets at altitude of 60 km wrote:
S-400s can intercept ballistic missiles at  185km altitude. (PAD ceiling 80km). Very Happy
But they will never sell their most important defense system used to defend their land to foreign powers any time soon.
And probably never to India since they collaborate a lot with NATO and Israel and the risk of they learning too much
from their main defense is too high.

Indian Military SAM Systems - Page 3 Empty Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme:

Post  IDB Fri Nov 21, 2014 4:51 am

A senior Israeli defence ministry official who is currently in New Delhi has informed the Ministry of Defence that Israel is ready to tweak it sophisticated, all-weather mobile air defence system, the Iron Dome to meet India's security needs.

The hi-tech Iron Dome system is designed to intercept and destroy short range rockets and artillery shells fired at its borders. However the India's requirements are different and it would not require the Iron Dome to stop rockets and artillery shells at the border. Israel has a sizeable population that borders with Palestine from where rockets are fired and that is not the case with India.

Indian cities are located further inland and not close to Pakistani borders. The Israeli official said that Israel would modify the Iron Dome system to protect Indian cities from any kind of aerial threat. Israel is ready to work with India to increase the interception range of the Iron Dome Missile, make it capable to detect and intercept LACM's (Land Attack Cruise Missile) which can be fired from Pakistan in the event of a war and also intercept heavier long range rockets from Multi-Barrel Rocket Launchers (MBRL). The Iron Dome system has successfully destroyed an incoming Grad rocket fired from a launcher from Gaza a few years ago.

If Israel's Iron Dome would be capable of intercepting rockets and missiles that are in possession with Pakistan then it would definitely get the attention and impress the Military decision makers in New Delhi.

Israel a few years ago had offered the Iron Dome Missile Defence System to the Indian Armed Forces but the Indian Air Force had turned down the offer saying that the system does not cater to India's threat environment and it requires major modifications to meet Indian needs. There are rumours that the MoD wants to place the Iron Dome batteries around strategic assets to protect them from aerial threats but no official statement has been made.

The DRDO too has been working on a Short Range Interceptor which will be capable of detecting and destroying incoming enemy cruise missiles, conventional artillery and short rage battlefield ballistic missiles which Pakistan has been pursuing to counter India's dreaded Cold Start Doctrine.

DRDO's interceptor will be able to provide a shield against incoming Pakistani missiles to advancing conventionally superior Indian forces that will cut Pakistan into half in less than a week. There are inside reports that the DRDO's interceptor is planned for testing in early 2016. It is planned for induction and mass scale production for the armed forces by 2018.

If India with its current politics further tries to play double game among countries that not only hate India but also do not want any economical or military powers on the global stage and still try to benefit from BRICS in development, good economy relations with resourceful and rich nations it will slow down its development and reduce its military capability.

Sitting between two chairs trying to get everything will only lead one thing that it loses both chairs and will fall on its rear.

If India wants good Air Defense there is only one address for greatest AD technology and that is russia, Israel does not hold any capability nor MIC to performe or create any serious capable ADS.

the problem of course is that an Iron Dome battery has how many missiles?

A Grad battery has 40 rockets on each vehicle and assuming it has 6-8 vehicles that means the Iron Dome system is going to run out of interceptor missiles fairly quickly against even a small attack.

Grad rockets are relatively cheap and can be used in enormous numbers... it would be fairly easy to use several Grad trucks to deplete the Iron Dome before the real attack missiles are fired...

Iron Dome is not a complete solution... you need an integrated air defence network that is linked with air power... when the Grads start being launched you need to be firing your own counter battery weapons to take out the launchers as well as shooting down the incoming threats.

India and Israel have “now virtually sealed the joint development of a medium-range surface-to-air missile system (MRSAM) for the Indian Army.”

The first tranche of the deal will be worth over 9,000 crore (roughly $1.67 billion), The MRSAMs, which will be on mobile launchers, will serve as India’s

replacement for the Russian-built Kvadrat and OSA-AKM systems that India purchased in the 1970s and 1980s. India has been searching the open market

for replacements for some years now, and previously rejected other offers because they didn’t contain sufficient technology transfer clauses

The Deal for MR-SAM / LR-SAM is in making for last 7-8 yrs.

Both LR/MR SAM are developed form Barak-8

    LR-SAM is Naval
    MR-SAM is Land based

DRDO describes LR SAM As: Long-Range SAM (LRSAM) is a joint development programme of DRDO, Indian Navy, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It has a range of 70 km using dual-pulse rocket motor and active radar seeker in terminal phase and inertial/mid-course update for guidance.

DRDO describes MR SAM as: Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) is one of the major mission-mode programmes taken up by DRDO as joint development programme with IAI, Israel. Design of the various sub-systems and major elements like combat management systems, missile launcher LBMFSTAR (Long-range Detection and Tracking Radar).

Indian Navy test-fires missile developed with Israel

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy on Tuesday test-fired the Barak 8 long range surface to air missile (LRSAM) for the first time from an Indian warship, after its successful test from an Israeli naval platform last month.

Tests of the LRSAM system, jointly developed by the DRDO and IAI Israel, started on Tuesday from INS Kolkata, and will continue on Wednesday, the Indian Navy said.

"IN (Indian Navy) gears up for maiden firing of Long Range Surface2Air msl 4m INS Kolkata... (sic)," navy spokesperson Captain D.K. Sharma tweeted.

The LRSAM system has been jointly developed by the DRDO and IAI Israel.

The system is to be deployed as the major missile system on the largest indigenously-built warship, INS Kolkata, which was inducted into the navy last year.

In November, the missile was successfully test-fired for the first time from an Israeli naval platform.

The LRSAM programme consists of missiles, weapon control system, MFSTAR radar), vertical launcher unit and two-way data link.

It will also be deployed on other naval ships including the recently commissioned INS Kamrota.

Indian Military SAM Systems - Page 3 Empty Stage Set for User Trials of Akash Missile from Today

Post  Pinto Thu Jan 28, 2016 3:18 pm

BALASORE: A series of user trials of surface-to-air supersonic Akash missile system will be carried out from a defence test facility off the Odisha coast from Thursday. Reliable sources said, the tests will be conducted from launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, about 15 km from here. The indigenously developed missile air defence system has been produced by Bharat Electronics Ltd. “A couple of tests has been planned on Thursday and Friday. The tests assume significance as those would be first in the series after the induction of the missile in the armed forces - Army and Air Force,” said a defence official.

Akash is a mobile, multiple- target handling and medium range air defence missile developed under Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). After years of rejection, allegedly for faults in the missile system, the Army had agreed to accept the modified version of the missile, which was formally inducted in the Army on May 5 last year. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had handed over the missile to the Air Force on July 10. Along with 13 DRDO laboratories, 19 public sector units, five ordinance factories, three national laboratories and six academic institutions, Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) successfully partnered with more than 265 private industries across the country to produce Akash.

Indian Military SAM Systems - Page 3 Empty IAF Conducts Successful Trial of Akash Missile

Post  Pinto Fri Jan 29, 2016 1:46 pm

BALASORE: After a ‘failed’ test on Tuesday, Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel successfully carried out another user trial of surface-to-air missile Akash from Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast on Wednesday. The missile targeted an aircraft, which mimicked the enemy fighter aircraft.

The indigenously developed sophisticated sleek missile having a strike range of 30 km was fired from the launching complex-III of the ITR at about 1.15 pm. On Tuesday, the missile had failed to hit the target. Prior to the launch of the missile in fully operational configuration, a lightweight and multirole aircraft Mirage was flown in a simulated coordination.

A DRDO official said the test was conducted as part of the operational exercise. Radars, sensors and telemetry tracking systems positioned at different locations tracked and monitored the missile’s trajectory parameters. “The mission met all parameters set by the user,” he said.

While the DRDO provided all logistic supports, IAF teams operated the deliverable Akash missile system including the target. The missile was successfully guided by multi-function phased array radar developed by Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a DRDO Lab and produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

The missile used for the test was picked up randomly from the assembly line after production. As claimed by DRDO it has achieved single digit accuracy reaching close to zero circular error probability (CEP). The entire flight path of the missile was smooth in accordance with pre-decided coordinates.

Akash, one of the five missiles developed under Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), has already been inducted in the Air Force while the missile’s Army version is in the final stage of induction into the armed forces.

Even as the Air Force accepted the Akash missile system as a substantial part of its arsenal in February 2010, the missile was officially inducted into the Indian Air force at function at Hyderabad on March 3, 2012. The missile has been successfully tested several times at both high and low altitudes against maneuvering targets at extreme ranges.

Defence sources said the Akash system is fully mobile and capable of protecting a moving convoy of vehicles. While the system was primarily designed as an air defence surface-to-air missile, it also has been earlier tested in a missile defence role. The system provides air defence coverage for an area of 2,000 sq km.

The missile has been developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) along with 13 other DRDO Laboratories and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited. Its launcher has been developed by R&DE (Engineers), a DRDO lab and produced by Tata Power and L&T.

    http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/IAF-Conducts-Successful-Trial-of-Akash-Missile/2014/08/13/article2377939.ece

The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted user trials of medium range supersonic Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) ‘Akash’ from a defence base off the Odisha coast on Thursday. Three rounds of the missile were fired within three hours targeting para-barrels.

The missiles were launched from the launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea between 11 am and 2 pm. Tests were aimed at gauging the flight consistency and effectiveness of the missile, besides ascertaining the serviceability of the system in various conditions.

A defence official said the mission boosted the air defence shield of the country and re-validated the weapon’s operational efficiency. During the trial, the missiles were aimed at intercepting the floating para barrels at a definite altitude over the Bay of Bengal. The entire flight of Akash was captured by electro-optical tracking systems.

The armed forces are scheduled to carry out a couple of more tests in the next few days.

Akash’ is a medium-range surface-to-air missile and it can reach targets 30 km away. The 5.8-metre-long sleek missile has a launch weight of 720 kg and can carry a warhead of 50 kg.

It can handle multiple targets with the help of a digitally coded command and guidance system. It is fuelled by solid propellants. It can also be fired from tracked vehicles. While its land variant was inducted in the Army in May last year, the Air Force version was formally handed over to the IAF in July.

Indian Army Seeks New Source of Surface-to-Air Missile Defense System

The Indian Army is lobbying to purchase quick reaction surface-to-air missile systems (QRSAM) because the homemade Akash air defense system is slower and ineffective while on the move, an army official said.

"The reaction time of Akash is longer and has a radar coverage less than 360 degrees. QRSAMs are needed to defend formations in the forward tactical battlefield area whereas Akash is being used for guarding its assets located in deeper areas inside the country," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Rahul Bhonsle, a retired Indian Army brigadier general, said: "Akash is suited for static air defense where the response time may be longer, thus the same may not be suitable for employment in the tactical battle area given the need for quick reaction and speedy engagements. Moreover, it appears that the Army also wants a mobile AD system whereas the Akash may not be as agile and also has a larger footprint."

No Ministry of Defense (MoD) official would comment on the Indian Army's demand that MoD purchase a surface-to-air missile system to supplement the Akash.

"This is one of the major indigenous programs that has been shot down by the Army. Better coordination between the design and development agencies and the Army is crucial to prevent such occurrences and salvage Make in India,” said Ankur Gupta, an analyst with Ernst and Young India. The Make in India policy's goal is to reduce weapon imports from 70 percent of acquisitions to about 50 percent in the next 10 years.

Since the only Indian-made Trishul surface-to-air system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was dumped 10 years ago because of technical failures, the only option is to import a system, the Indian Army official said.

After the Trishul system failed, the Indian Air Force imported the Spyder from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel and subsequently acquired the Akash system as well.

The Indian Army has acquired only the Akash, worth over $2.5 billion, but floated a $1.5 billion tender to acquire more systems.

It was issued to global and domestic defense companies, including Russia’s Rosoboronexport, Raytheon of the United States, Israel Aerospace Industries, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Tetraedr of Belarus, South Korea’s Doosan Group and LIG Nex1, Thales and Eurosam of France, Diehl Defense of Germany, and pan-European MBDA.

However, no MoD official would comment on the status of procurement.

A tender issued in 2008 had poor response from overseas defense companies because of issues regarding the transfer of technology, and the technical features of the requirement. Only Rafael had been selected after technical evaluation, and the tender had to be withdrawn because it was on a single vendor basis.

Israeli Spyder system emerges as frontrunner for Indian Army's air defence needs

The Israeli Spyder system has emerged as the frontrunner for an Army requirement for a fast reaction air defence cover against enemy aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. The Army's short-range surface-to-air missile (SRSAM) programme, which was started in 2011, is nearing final selection that will lead to a contract valued at over Rs 18,000 crore.

Sources have told ET that the Spyder system — manufactured by Rafael Advanced Systems — is the frontrunner as its competitors from Sweden and Russia were not able to perform during technical trials carried out by the Indian Army that were concluded last year. dunno

Indian Military SAM Systems - Page 3 Content

With both Rosoboronexport (Russia) and SAAB (Sweden) facing compliance issues, the Spyder missile system could go ahead for the next stage of procurement which is the opening of the price bid. The Spyder has already been ordered by the Indian Air Force and has been inducted to protect sensitive air fields along the border.

The Army's SRSAM project has, however, gone through several delays and hiccups and has been running for over five years now. The Army has separately ordered the Indian-made Akash SAM systems as well but these will be tasked mainly with protection of static or defensive units as they have limited mobility as well as a larger reaction time to an incoming attack.

While there is a push for additional Akash units for the Army from its public sector manufacturers, the SRSAM project is under a 'global buy' clause that would bring in work for the Indian private industry. The offsets involved in the project itself are valued at close to Rs 6,000 crore, which would be invested into joint ventures and production facilities in India. The Army requires at least two regiments of SRSAM that would include as many as 1,800 missiles. It also requires the winning company to transfer technology to India to manufacture the system.

    India Successfully Test-Fires Surface-to-Air Missile Barak 8

The Indian Defense Ministry on Thursday successfully carried out the test of a long range surface-to-air-class missile (LRSAM) system, dubbed Barak 8, manufactured jointly by India and Israel, local Odisha TV broadcaster reported.

Russian-Indian Company to Test Su-30 Fighter Equipped With BrahMos Missile
NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – The test was originally planned to be held on Wednesday, but was postponed at the last moment.

According to the broadcaster, Barak 8 was test-fired from launchpad No.3 of the Chandipur Integrated Test Range (ITR) in the Odisha state.

In the backdrop of tensions along the western border, India has successfully tested an Israeli surface-to-air Python and Derby (Spyder) missile system at Chandipur-on-sea against a UK-made unmanned aerial target. The trial was conducted on Thursday to check the operational readiness of the system.

New Delhi (Sputnik) – The Spyder is set to replace India’s age-old air defense system, the Soviet-era Osa-AKM and 9K35 Strela-10, at six air bases and other critical locations along the western border.

“The Spyder SR system is a generation-and-a-half ahead of the Osa and Strela which were essentially designed four decades ago. The Spyder SR will provide a high degree of assurance in terms of air as well missile defense cover with a Lock On Before Launch (LOBL) as well as After Launch (LOAL), thus the reaction time will be much faster with high hit probability,” Brigadier Rahul Bhonsle, a retired Indian Army brigadier and defense analyst, said.

The Spyder launches two different types of missile — Python 5 and Derby missiles — from the same launcher pad. Most of the upcoming jets – Rafale and LCA Tejas — of the IAF will be equipped to fire Derby missiles. The LCA Tejas also successfully launched a guided Derby missile on Thursday.

India had inked a $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli company in 2008-09 for the supply of 90 launchers.
