US-backed forces enter key IS bastion in north Syria (Manbij)

US-backed Kurdish and Arab fighters advanced Thursday into the Islamic State jihadist group's bastion of Manbij in northern Syria, sparking fierce street fighting as they push to take the city.

Backed by air strikes by the US-led coalition bombing IS in Syria and Iraq, fighters with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance entered Manbij from the south, a monitoring group said.

The advance marked a major breakthrough in the battle for Manbij, once a key link on the supply route between the Turkish border and IS's de facto Syrian capital of Raqa.

Yeah, something tells me that IS forces fighting the Syrian and Iraqi Army on one side, and those opposing the Kurds/SDF can't be compared in both quality and quantity.

Just as the "rebel" "anti-ISIS" efforts (their primary effort if we are to believe their handlers) pale in comparison to their fight against Damascus government.

I get it, the Russian air support was nowhere to be found near Raqqa. But where was the NATO airforce? I mean, it is obvious that quite a large IS force mobilised to attack the SAA salient. And it was not detected or attacked while assembling or attacking.

How convenient. Reminds me of those huge Al-Nusra, Jaish and ISIS armoured and motorised columns parading in broad daylight while advancing towards their conquests.

This is a dirty, cynical geopolitical war, and I don't have to remind anyone how the "armed democratic opposition" ascended and from where did it source its weapons, funding and support.
I personally don't like the nature of this war, but Russian leadership's loyalty is to Russian Federation and the people of Russian Federation, which means that if they got something favouable in return, they should further their interests first.

I honestly feel bad about those various soon-to-be extinct Syrian minorities and those Syrians who bravely fought, and died, for their country. They fought at a disadvantage, against irregular and barbaric forces enjoying media, intelligence and equipment advantage for several years.

That's because the fools in SAA tried to advance towards the capital of IS and not e.g. Deir Hafir.
Iraqi Army dares not advance against Mosul, when Falluja is still hot.

What basically happened is that SAA got hit by cream of the crop VBIED unit of the IS.
They have probably over 100 of them, rest assured.

Also IS has counter-attacked against Kurds near Manbij yesterday as well and took some villages quite near the Tishrin dam. That said, YPG/SDF have much better air support, around the clock and dating to before Russians joined the party.

Fair point. Actually goes very well with my opinion about hugely overstated Kurdish/SDF fighting prowess - they get nowhere without air support - their only successes occur when the coalition gives them airsupport around the clock. Explains their passive role elsewhere as well.

Don't get me wrong people, but you should tone down your accusations aimed at Syrian Army. By now they probably had more than 100 000 killed and wounded soldiers, among them probably some of their best prior to war. Their equipment is badly outdated.

Worse than what JNA had 20+ years ago, significantly worse than what UkrOps have, and hopelessly worse than what the Russians had at their disposal in the 1st Chechen war. Bear in mind the outcomes in those cases. I mean no disrespect or insult, but the blame usually doesn't rest (solely) on the common regular soldiers.

One thing is for sure, SAA's recent Raqqa defeat is not RuAF's or Russia's fault. Period.

Syrian Civil War: News #8 - Page 24 Empty American F/A-18s intercept Russian bombers allegedly striking US-backed rebels

American F/A-18s intercept Russian bombers allegedly striking US-backed rebels

The Russian strike aircraft resumed bombing when American jets left the area.

This post is appearing on Autoblog Military, Autoblog's sub-site dedicated to the vehicles, aircraft, and ships of the world's armed forces.

The non-sense continues in the skies over Syria. A new report from CNN tells the story of yet another close encounter between US and Russian aircraft.

According to the report, Russian Sukhoi Su-24s were bombing US-backed Syrian rebels, allegedly with 500-pound bombs and cluster munitions. Armed US Navy F/A-18 Hornets were diverted to the area after two rounds of strikes, but the Russians ignored their hails, which came on a mutually agreed upon, pilot-to-pilot frequency. When the US fighters left the area to refuel, the Russian aircraft went back to bombing the rebel positions.

US officials issued a stern takedown of the incident.

"Here's a case where they actually attacked forces that were fighting ISIL. And if that was their intention, that's the opposite of what they said they were going to do," Secretary of Defense Ash Carter told CNN. If not, then it says something about the quality of the information upon which they make airstrikes."

"Department officials expressed strong concerns about the attack on the coalition-supported counter-ISIL forces at the At-Tanf garrison, which included forces that are participants in the cessation of hostilities in Syria, and emphasized that those concerns would be addressed through ongoing diplomatic discussions on the cessation of hostilities," Peter Cook, the Pentagon's press secretary, told reporters over the weekend.

For its part, Russia denied that its targeted US-backed Syrians, and said it had "forewarned member states of the US-led coalition about the ground targets to strike on."

"The object which had suffered bombardment was located more than 300 km far from borders of territories claimed by the American party as ones controlled by the opposition joined the ceasefire regime," the Russian Ministry Defense told CNN in a statement.

Tensions between the US and its allies and Russia have been on the rise all year. This is far from the first air-to-air encounter between the two sides, which usually comes in the form of Russian aircraft flying near sovereign airspace with their transponders switched off.

Syrian Civil War: News #8 - Page 24 Empty Congress warns Russia over its ‘provocative’ military action

Congress warns Russia over its ‘provocative’ military action

A bipartisan delegation of leading senators is spearheading an effort to hold Russia accountable for a recent series of provocative military action against US forces stationed across the globe, according to a new congressional measure that demands Moscow cease the "dangerous and unprofessional" activity targeting American forces.

The Russian air force has become increasingly aggressive against the United States in recent months, culminating in an April incident in which a Russian military plane performed a dangerous barrel roll over an American reconnaissance plane, coming within 100 feet of the US plane.

This and similar activity by Russian forces has angered US officials and prompted the lawmakers on Tuesday to take steps aimed at halting Russia's "dangerous and unprofessional intercepts" of US forces, according to a copy of the new measure.

The resolution-backed by Senate Foreign Relations Committee members David Perdue (R., Ga.), Cory Gardner (R., Colo.), Ron Johnson (R., Wis.), Bob Menendez (D., N.J.), and Jim Risch (R., Idaho)-calls on Russia to stop endangering US forces and makes clear that the United States has a right to operate in all international waters and airspace.

"Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia has become increasingly assertive and aggressive militarily," Perdue said in a statement provided to the Washington Free Beacon. "We've recently seen Russian military personnel taunting US military units with provocative military maneuvers."

"Not only are these actions irresponsible, they endanger the lives of American and Russian soldiers alike and fly in the face of decades-long agreements between our two nations," Perdue said. "Further, Russia continues to build up its military and cyber capabilities, and poses direct challenges to stated US interests. Today, we come together to condemn Russia's provocative and antagonistic behavior."

    russia military parade Reuters

The resolution seeks to move the international community to pressure Moscow over its behavior in addition to condemning Russia's military moves.

Russia has shown no signs that it will stop endangering US forces.

A Russian warplane in the Baltic Sea flew within 50 feet of a US craft during another April incident, prompting the Pentagon to condemn the incident as "erratic and aggressive."

Russia also continues to pursue a massive military buildup in strategic locations, such as the Black Sea, eastern Mediterranean Sea, Syria, and the Arctic.

This action is meant to "deny United States access to key areas of Eurasia and often pose direct challenges to stated United States interests," according to the new congressional measure.

This action coincides with a buildup of cyber capabilities that has given Moscow the ability to wage "crippling cyber attacks on the electric grid and other critical infrastructures of the United States," according to the Senate resolution.

Meanwhile, the United States has determined that Russia continues to violate a treaty governing intermediate and short-range ballistic missiles, known as the INF Treaty.

The US should bugger off from Syria along with the Salafi jiahdis it funds and arms. As for ships buzzed by Russian jets within

IMO, what they need is armed drones. There is not much point in looking at what the enemy is doing without having that instant capability to neutralize them.

    I disagree.

the role of recon in this sense to to see the enemy... an armed drone can hit one vehicle... perhaps taking out one or two important people so for assassination they are excellent, but an attack on an entrenched enemy you would be much better fitting it with more fuel tanks to extend operations time and give it a targeting pod so it can mark targets for other platforms like artillery etc.

A separate design optimised as a bomb truck with perhaps a large number of small but guided weapons like quad packs of Krisantema or even a guided 50kg bomb for internal carriage in large numbers would be better... when targets are spotted and the size of the enemy force assessed then launch the appropriate number of attack drones with the original drones marking targets with lasers or determining the coordinates of fixed targets to pass data to GLONASS guided munitions on the attack drones...

SAA gaining too much ground can trigger response from Kurds because they want to establish the country. (Assad would be finished if Kurds will engage SAA- they are willing to fight and die for their cause)

At least that's how I see it.

And thats 100% correct.  People forget that ISIS+ ALqaeda + "Moderates" FSA+ Turkey + Saudi Arabia + Israel and Kurds are on the American side. albeit Russia have some influence
on kurds ,and Kurds in Syria ,its relations with Syrian army are not beyond repair ,since they cooperate at times.

People's tunnel vision seem to think that the war will end once RAQQA liberated ,or northern
Syria but thats not the case. Because Turkey can invade too. then Syria will need to fight and even more difficult war. against ISIS + ALqaeda + a direct war with Turkey army. and it will
provoke Russia to declare war against a NATO player ,which Americans can provide weapons to fight by proxy Russia. This will be an ideal scenario for Americans. That Turkey fights Russia ,and americans arms Turkey to fight Russia.

So Russia needs to fight an attrition war instead. and persuade Syria to stay away of Turkey border. and create such conditions for the rebels terrorist occupied zones ,that life will be impossible. Just look at central Aleppo , is almost totally conquered but have just a 5km wide
entry to the terrorist center. So that United Nations cannot blame Russia for any civilian starvation in Aleppo since there is one gate open for food to enter. Cool  But officially already
Aleppo is a failed city for the terrorist that needs to be maintained . Then Raqa is bombed with frequency so life cannot go there as business as normal. then when new shipment of weapons comes from Turkey ,Russia bomb them. Russia also bombed all the oil fields terrorist control ,so terrorist cannot finance itself. So Russia strategy is economic and political war against US and its allies. creating failed zones ,in the places NATO sponsored terrorist controls. and freeze the conflict ,while at the same time promoting cease of fires and reconcilation. So while Russia promotes reconcilation ,Americans promote war. allowing Russia to be in a much better world public opinion ,in case Russia is forced to defend Syria against NATO invasion. ,So that the more time pass and more evidence shows ,Americans expose themselves as aiding ISIS indirectly by supporting Turkey and supporting directly Alqaeda.  So the strategy Russia is using is not only on the military field ,but also in Politics ,and with Public Opinion and with World media.  Still most of the world is unaware of what really happens in Syria.. very few people look their news on Internet.  Eventually Russia strategy seeks to create a major international pressure on Americans to stop supporting terrorism.  If Russia is forced to start a major war
in Syria ,it cannot be against the middle players, like Turkey ,Saudi Arabia,Jordan or Israel ,but Americans instead. This is because Public Opinion in United States will never tolerate their government to start a war against Russia ,in support of Alqaeda and ISIS. The risk Obama face
is a major civil war at the first american plane/warship shutdown by Russia in self defense.

This is Russia goal to end the war. Through Public Opinion and through international rights of
Syria territorial integrity and through a war of athrition.  yes the terrorist wants to die. But none of them want to be poors when alive. They will actually get tired of the war ,when no longer Turkey can continue providing food and weapons to them. and most of them will surrender.
Another good reason to delay/freeze the war is that it will destroy Turkey image world wide and destroy its economy. So money Turkey waste in Syria is money Turkey cannot use to buy a new plane or warship. that later could be used against Russia ,in a major war.  And holding the conflict have another bonus. That force terrorist to fight outside their bunkers in the open and
    and kill many of them.

So under perfect ideal conditions , the ideal war for Russia in Syria will be to hold very easily and cheaply all the zones Syrian army controls with just a dozen of planes and with very few ,to none Syrian or civilian casualties. and let the Turkey economy sink and the American image destroyed ,and terrorist world wide to be grind in Syria and all killed there and not in Russia. Better to fight Chechens in Syria than in Russian cities.  Unfortunately Russia strategy will never be perfect because civilians will die on hands of terrorist until they defeated. but if Turkey and Americans invade and Russia economy force Russia to leave ,it will be worse. and even more civilians killed ,as it was in US invasion of IRAQ.

Lets neither forget Russia have another war in Ukraine , and Kaliningrad face major danger too of being invaded by ISIS ,courtesy of Americans. So i think is clear Russia will not like to start
a full scale war too early in Syria vs NATO ,and be caught in many other fronts at the same time.  Russia could have avoided a lot of problems ,if they just properly armed and trainned
the Syrian army in the first 5 years of the war. or even earlier. Its major mistake was to wait 5 years to help ,when Syria already lost 75% of its territory. none of this problems will have happened if Russia properly armed Syrian army with decent tanks. before the Arab spring began. it had to be obvious for anyone ,that Syria was going to be next after US invaded IRAQ in 2003. and Israel invaded lebanon.

in the end i really think , the advantage is on the side of Russia as long Syrian Army have
soldiers to fight. and Russia can keep very low ,the cost of the war ,and can hold most of their places for several years more . Because if Americans goes and start bombing Syrian army ,Russia will give an ultimatum to Americans and if they continue it will close the airspace to them , So public opinion will be on the side of Russia ,even from Americans citizens,if an American plane shutdown for seeking a fight in a place they are illegally there. Even United Nations will give the reason to Syria ,since Americans are invading the airspace  of a sovereign nation and are aiding Alqaeda.

What i think Syria should be doing is heavily reinforce ,all its positions and major routes from Damascus to Latakia ,clear the rural zones of Aleppo completely and prepare to deal with a major invasion from Turkey or Jordan .and finally eliminate all the terrorist in damascus. which are the most annoying group of all and dangerous too.

attrition wars works ,Americans lost many wars this way , from vietnam ,Korea ,Iraq second war ,they also lost in Angola war , when they backed some rebels. and they will lose in Syria too ,since there have to be more than 75,000 rebels that are financed ,and needs logistics and weapons. and Turkey have more than 200,000 soldiers near Syria border . Turkey will not be able to continue its war against Syria for another 5 years.

This is my plan for better fighting teams.

First: eliminate all T-55 and T-62 from combat units, put them all in defense lines and traning centers.

-Russia gives 500 T-72, it's feasible, from stocks, with lots of spares. That would be mostly T-72 and T-72A, and few T-72B if necessary. T-64 and T-80 are a no go, so don't think about it, syrian army doesn't need logistic and maintenance nightmare, it needs tanks it already knows and operates. All of those tanks are fitted with insane amout of Kontakt 1 and maybe some cheap APS if possible, cage armour or spaced plates if possible.

New units are formed, no more tank units, but only tank-inantry units.

The smaller unit will be: 2 T-72 + 16 troops. Men ride on tanks, men walk with tanks during fighting, WW2 soviet style, forget BMP and all those deathtraps, syrian assymetrical warfare needs radical tactics, not soviet coldwar doctrine!

This small combat unit, will be multiplied by 4 to make a combat company. 8 tanks, 64 men.

Tanks and troops will fight together at all cost and the firepower of 125mm HE frag rounds will win this fucking war. The smallest unit of 2 T-72 with 16 troops will have 44 ready to shoot HE frag 125mm shells to the face of rats, end the bullshit.

Support a company with a sniper team, a supply truc/ med truc team, and a mortar team.

End the war in 6 months, with russian air support.

Russia must send the 500 T-72 and logistic to support them.

    Syrian troops must train better.

The 4 platoons of each company will be symetrically armed and redundant.

Each 16 troop foot unit will have better weapons: russia must help with AK-103 or AK-74, more optics, more 1 shot disposable RPG/RPO style launchers. Give back faith and motivation to those men, fight along tanks, eradicate rats. This new tactic must be applied to the whole units fighting on the frontlines, make special light infantry teams for special tasks, but use this T-72/infantry teams to take raqqa and fight on open ground.

Level rebel cities with artillery, fuck UN and fuck USA threats.

Russia could give 100 or 200 ISU-152 from its stock, used properly, in support of T-72 teams, it will level cities block by block and rats will have nowhere to hide. ISU-152 can be improved with kontakt 1 ERA and space armor, no problem. 152mm ammo stock is here, ML-20 gun uses same ammo as D-20 howitzer.

Like I said. If SAA get a few hundred Kornet cars and about 50,000 Kornet missiles. War over. This war is low on manpower, low on tanks. So what is needed are lots of guided missiles. 50,000 Kornets is enough to wipe out every rebel.

    @Resistance,

Please stop trolling the forum more than it already is trolled. A few hundred Kornets will be enough to take over hundreds of kilometers and hold cities? Success is already being made, no matter the delays it is apparent that the SAA will come out victorious. Like seriously I hope you are trolling and are not serious.

We have in Germany a saying "too many cooks spoil the broth"! That's exactly what happend. The "syrian army" is in reality not a real army, they need help of militias and they have their own hierarchy. They loyality of the many militias is not to Syria or Assad, it is to the militia leader, if he runs from battlefield the whole group will follow. So it's easy for IS to hew a small hole in the syrian defense, pick one specific militia group and push exactly through this hole...at the end all syrian combat units from the frontline are withdrawing in pure panic and IS can slaughter them easy (domino-effect).

Syrian troops must learn! If they flee from battlefield, from IS, they are dead! It's so simple. IS take no prisoners and if they do only to kill them in barbaric ways. If they fight, they should fight to last bullet!!!

Russia can't do the whole job in Syria, it is a syrian problem. Maybe they should organize better the hierarchy of troops and embed the militias into a real unified army.

Like the old saying...A mistake can be a great chance to learn something. And I hope syrian army will learn!

You need fast attack weapons with automatic targeting ,that can counter small ,very fast mobile targets , like Terrorist in motorbikes with a 200kg tnt bomb. So kornets are not ideal against very fast terrorist. you will miss a lot using kornets.

better solution will be a T-72 or T-80s with upgraded electronics and computer guide targeting and night vision. artillery also needs to be fast and highly mobile. also something like a 65mm gun or 100mm gun will be nice.

something like this will be fine.. with anti personnel ammo.

it can be combined with a terminator

    Syrian Civil War: News #8 - Page 24 Bmpt_REA_2009

ideally a high speed ,high caliber gatlin gun mounted on a truck ,will be ideal to terrify the terrorist and suicide bombers.

Does Russia have a gun like this?

This will be ideal to kill fast mass waves of suicide bombers on armored jeeps ,or motorbikes.

But terrorist also use trucks with reinforced metal plates ,that can only be taken on time by
100mm guns or several kornets hits.

    Sorry Vann, this is bullshit!

Syrian army have enough equiptment, they need more men (capable and courageous)!

You can easy neutralize a SVBIED with a antique tank, a rpg etc. Mines and booby traps are unknown to SAA? I CAN'T really understand how SVBIED can be a problem for syrian army? Complete incomprehensible to me!!! Even a dozen SVBIED is no excuse. It's a flat desert terrain around Tabqa, you can see a vehicle from uncredible far distance. What the syrian guys thought would come with vehicle and a dustcloud? Nice girls wanna making love with them? They had enough time to react! And they withdrawed not 10 km or so, they withdrawed over 50 km!!! There is no reason for this disaster only poor morale, panic, fear and bad planning.

And the argument IS attacking at night, artillery should be able to illuminate battlefield at the right moment and some units will have night vision devices! Even not every IS soldier is equipped with night vision googles.

Last week has shown all of those that had high hopes as to how weak the regular Syrian Army is. After you get past the Republican Guard units, Tiger Force and Marines it is pretty ineffective. But 5 years of civil war will do that.
