Type-055 DDG Large Destroyer Thread

The Type 055 DDG is thought to be PLAN's next generation destroyer. It is a warship with some very serious firepower to reckon with. The hulls used in the class of Type 052Bs, Type 52Cs are matured hull technology and the new Type 055's hull will be based on the former two classes hull, although it is thought to be certainly larger than those two classes. This all new class of DDG will most likely to feature a more stealthly hull and is speculated to be nuclear powered.



Prospective specs from the communities highly spectulates the design specifications as belows:

Tonnage: 12,000 tons fully loaded
Length: 183m
Beam: 22m
Propulsion: Conventional but most probably could be nucleared
Speed: 35 knots

Sensors and processing systems:

New generation of multi-module active phased array radar with a range of 600 km able to monitor and control several hundred targets and automatically distribute targets to various combat units (including the destroyer itself and other combat units). A joint combat data distribution transmission system similar to the Link-16 of US Navy.

Armament:

There will be four level of missile interception.

It will be armed with:

• One 155 mm gun that will later be replaced by an electromagnetic or laser gun.

• Two 64VLS for surface to air missiles, cruise missiles, anti submarine missiles and anti ship missiles.

• Each vertical launch tube of the 64VLS is 16 meters long and can be installed with one to eight missiles. The total number of missiles installed will be 128.

• The surface to air missiles will be HongQi-10.

• The anti ship missiles will be better than YJ-83 and YJ-62.

• WHH004 launch device for new anti-submarine and anti-warship torpedoes.

• Type 1130 11-barrel CIWS with the rate of fire exceeding 10,000 rounds per minute.

• There will be two new-type anti-submarine helicopters on the destroyer.

Using ps, the comparison of 055 & 052D, one can see the vast difference in length, hence tonnage

Satellite imagery from November 2016 seem to indicate that a 3rd Type 055 Destroyer is being built at Dalian shipyard in Northern China. The first two hulls are currently under construction at Jiangnan Changxing naval shipyard new Shanghai. Type 055 is the next generation class of Guided-Missile Destroyer (DDG) for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).

Today at the Shanghai shipyard "Jiangnan-Changxing" solemn ceremony was held on the launch of the very first Chinese destroyer pr.055. According to rumors, the displacement of these destroyers can reach about 12,000 tons, they are officially called the destroyers of the "10,000-ton" class. As far as we know, three more ships of this project are under construction in Shanghai and Dalian.

It is reported that the ship is equipped with antiaircraft, anti-missile, anti-ship and antisubmarine weapons. I hope soon there will be shots on top of the ship, so that you can accurately estimate the number of cells of universal vertical launchers for various missiles. Earlier there was information that there could be a total of about 112-128.

China is getting ready to launch vessels 3 and 4 at the same time. That will make 4 large destroyers (12.000 tons) launched in less then 1 year.
These 4 ships will add about 450 VLS tubes for the PLAN.

With 12,000 tons those things are basically cruisers.

Yes, building massive ships with questionable engines (which Russia complained about) in short time, using outdated technology.

Hell, if Russia wanted to build massive hulking ships with not much to do other than sit at a port idle, that is expensive, carries a ton of outdated weapons, and what not; hey, why not?

But thank god Russia doesn't waste their money on that.

I mean, look, China is pumping out "5th gen jets" faster than Russia! But wait? They aren't as stealthy as they look and how internet professionals felt, especially since Su-30's in India spotted them at long distance as they were flying in Tibet.

Seriusly? The Chines ship building industry is a russian wet dream today. China has launched ships with a total tonage of about 100.000 tons in the last year or so.

The ship uses COGAG gas turbines that is based on the Ukrainian UGT 25000 engine. I would not call that "questionable engines".

What other "outdated technology" are u talking about? The ship has a modern active phased array radar system, is armed with long range surface-to-air missiles /anti-balistic missiles, Long-range land-attack cruise missiles, long range anti-ship missiles a newly developt 130 mm dual-purpose naval gun and modern radar and electro-optical tracking CIWS.

And China isnt waisting any money, China has a shit load of money that it uses to modernize all branches in the PLA.

At least as fighting worthy as the Arleigh Burge, I mean very conservative estimate.

J20 OK is not the most amazing plane ever but comparing it with the best flight object in the history of aviation is a little unfair. Maybe as fighting worthy that F15 I would say.

In China, simultaneously launched two destroyers project 055

July 3, 2018 in Dalian at the Chinese shipbuilding association Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (Group) (DSIC), a part of the Chinese state shipbuilding corporation China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), held a ceremony of simultaneous launching of the first two there for the Navy PLA large destroyers of project 055. This is the third and fourth ships of this project launched in China - the first two 055 destroyers are being built at the Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard Shipbuilding and Heavy Industry Corporation of Shanghai S hipbuilding company, a part of the Chinese state shipbuilding corporation China Shipbuilding State Corporation (CSSC). The lead destroyer of project 055 Nanchang (南昌, Nanchang, board number "101") was launched in Shanghai on June 28, 2017 and is expected to enter the factory trial tests in the near future and will be introduced into the Chinese flag in the 2019 year. According to Chinese network resources, on August 24, 2018, the Chinese main destroyer of the new project 055, named Nanchang (南昌, Nanchang, board number 101), sailed from Shanghai for the first time to factory test runs. The ship was built at the Shanghai Shipbuilding Company Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding and Heavy Industry Corporation (Jiangnan-Changxing) of the Shanghai Shipbuilding Company, part of the China State Shipbuilding State Corporation (CSSC).



The Chinese destroyers of Project 055 (the Western designation Renhai-class) are the largest non-navigating escorted surface ships currently being built in the world, with an estimated full displacement of about 13,000 tons and a length of 180 meters. In the PRC, they are officially called "destroyers of 10,000-ton class." , and the US Department of Defense they have been called "cruisers" since 2017. Project destroyers 055 should be equipped with universal vertical launchers with 112 cells for missiles for various purposes.

The main destroyer of Project 055 Nanchang was built at the Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding and Heavy Industry Corporation in 2014 and was launched on June 28, 2017. It is expected that after a sufficiently extensive test program, the ship will be transferred to the PLA Navy in 2019.

During the construction of a series of the newest destroyers of the project 055 (class "Nanchang"), intended for the Navy of the People’s Liberation Army of China, gas turbines are used, the prototype of which were samples of Ukrainian production. On this Friday, July 12, reportsMilitary reviewwith reference to the Chinese edition of Sohu.


According to Sohu , a gas turbine QC-280 of local production, which was created on the basis of the Ukrainian UGT-25000, became the "heart" of the ship with a total displacement of about 13 thousand tons. 


During the period of warming relations between China and the United States, the Chinese destroyers were equipped with gas turbines of the LM-2500 type, which had a good reputation. However, Washington later imposed an embargo on military supplies. 

"The construction of domestic destroyers was under threat, and China moved to cooperate with Ukraine," explains Sohu . 

The People's Republic of China acquired ten gas turbines UGT-25000, which included a complete set of technical documentation. However, the newspaper notes, Beijing did not go by way of reckless copying, but conducted a whole range of research works, which eventually made it possible to eliminate a number of shortcomings inherent in the Ukrainian product. For example, unlike the original, the installation operation is not accompanied by the emission of thick black smoke. As a result, the QC-280 turbine appeared, the degree of localization of production of which currently exceeded 95%, according to Sohu . 

According to the publication, the structure of the power plant destroyers of the project 055 includes four turbines QC-280, producing a total power of more than 150 thousand horsepower.

Actually in another article I read that the Chineses offered to Russia the gas turbine QC-280 for the new helicopter carrier.

I don't believe that Russia will take their offer, since they are already trying to replace the imported chinese diesel engines with russian counterparts.

The QC-280 is however bigger and more powerful (about.1/3 more powerful) than the Russian M90FR, that is the largest of the 3 set of gas turbine that Saturn is developing.

From what I read, each gas turbine of the Gorshkov frigate and of.the 20386 corvette will be capable of 27500 hp (circa 20,5 MW), while the Chinese QC-280 will be capable of 28 - 30 MW (38000 -40000 hp).

I do not know if Russia will expand the capabilities of the M90FR gas turbine (the american LM2500 power grew up quite a bit from the first version), or if they will design a new larger engine.
