The one drawback with this configuration is that a big cruiser such as a Slava lacks land attack capability.

It seems she´s starting to get ready for the high seas, a pity though that the Bazalt missiles are not replaced. Will Moskva or Varyag be next to be overhauled, and will they also keep the Bazalt?

It got Vulkan AFAIK.
But yeah that doesn't have the flexibility Kalibr affords.

All the Slava cruisers are cylcing through this refit/modernisation one after the other, I believe.

A common mistake... this vessel wont miss a capability it never had... the real problem with using Vulkan instead of Calibr is that every Russian port will need to have Vulkan missiles in stock and engineers and mechanics who know what they are doing with these huge powerful missiles.
If it had Calibr not only would it have land attack capability it would also not have to worry about which port it is heading to in Russia because they will all have Calibr and the support equipment needed for repairs and replacements.
Nice pics BTW. My vote.

Apparetly the Russian navy has approved for the design, which has been released.

Russia's Northern Fleet cruiser to get new missile system
The Marshal Ustinov cruiser is undergoing modernization at the Zvyozdochka defense shipyard in Severodvinsk
ARKHANGELSK, September 29. /TASS/. The Russian Northern Fleet’s cruiser Marshal Ustinov, which is undergoing repairs and modernization at the Zvyozdochka defense shipyard in Severodvinsk, northwest Russia, will be armed with a new missile system and will be back in service again in 2016, the enterprise’s general director Nikolay Kalistratov said Tuesday.
"It has been decided to equip the vessel with a new [missile] system. The ship will be handed to Russia’s navy, as envisioned by the contract, in 2016," Kalistratov said.
The Marshal Ustinov arrived at Zvyozdochka in June 2011 for scheduled repairs. In November 2012 it was lifted from water and mounted at a staple base. Work to repair the drainage, dewatering, fire safety and other systems of the vessel were held in the dock.
In June 2013, the cruiser was floated and modernization work continued afloat. Earlier it was reported that the cruiser will be handed to the navy after upgrade in 2015.
The Marshal Ustinov missile cruiser was laid down at the Nikolayev shipyard in 1978. It was made part of the Northern Fleet in 1986. In 1994-1997 it underwent upgrade at St. Petersburg’s Severnaya Verf shipyard.
The Marshal Ustinov is a missile cruiser of Project 1164 Atlant. It has a displacement of 11,380 tons, is 186 meters long and 20.8 meters wide. It can travel at a speed up to 34 knots (some 63 kmph) to distances of about 8,000 miles, and has a crew of 510 people.
It main armament is 16 launching facilities of P-500 Bazalt supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Russia’s Navy has three such missile cruisers: the Moskva in the Black Sea Fleet, the Varyag in the Pacific Fleet and the Marshal Ustinov in the Northern Fleet.

Re: Project 1164 Atlant: Slava Class cruiser
I believe P-1000 was already installed in 1997. It's a bit unclear what exactly was changed. Some say only the missiles on Moskva and Marshal Ustinov were changed, while the launchers stayed the same, so there are some limitations. Varyag has native P-1000 infrastructure, with new launchers.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "new missile complex" actually just means changing 5V55RM into 48N6E2 (it's non-foreign version that is). Same as they are switching from 48N6 to 48N6E2 on Admiral Nakhimov.
People get overexcited when they hear "new". Don't.

If that's the case.. i would expect to see 30N6 in place of the 3R41.

Not necessarily.
Pyotr Veliky has no problem guiding S-300FM with Volna. Unless they only use the Flap Lid in the front for Fort-M.
There is also Fregat and Podberyozovok on Ustinov.

Russian Missile Cruiser Varyag to Be Modernized Until 2020
According to a source in the Russian defense industry, the flagship of the Russian Pacific Fleet, Guards’ missile cruiser Varyag, will undergo a modernization until 2020.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The flagship of the Russian Pacific Fleet, Guards’ missile cruiser Varyag, will undergo a modernization until 2020, a source in the Russian defense industry said Friday.
"An overhaul and modernization of the Pacific Fleet's Guards missile cruiser Varyag will be carried out in the period until 2020," the source told RIA Novosti.
He added that the modernization implies equipping of the cruiser with new radioelectronic weapons, and upgrading of the propulsion system.
The Varyag is a Slava-class guided missile cruiser commissioned in 1989.
It was designed as surface strike ship with anti-air and anti-submarine warfare capability, and has a primary armament of sixteen P-1000 Vulkan nuclear-capable supersonic cruise missiles.

I hope that also V-1000 will be replaced modernized Onyxes or Zircons. And OSA by Pantsir/or Tor
there will not be armaments modernization, only electronics and propulsion system upgrade

so old AShM remain? no Onyx replacements? I can imagine that if P-700 cell can be replaced by 3xCaliber then ?-1000 cell can be replaced by 2-3xOnyx, or I am wrong?

Re: Project 1164 Atlant: Slava Class cruiser
I suspect that the heavy construction is complete and the workfronts have shifted to internal fitout & testing of electrical/electronic equipment, cabling and integration engineering (eg software and systems interfaces). In my experience this is where most delays are incurred with marine upgrades.hoom wrote:Not much apparent progress since Oct.
