Anyway, seems that the terrorists are on brink of complete collapse in Aleppo and that a further ten districts have been liberated today. Peskov has advised caution about premature expectations because there will be a hard core who will fight to the death and try to cause as much destruction as they can before the end. I suspect Assad will claim liberation of Aleppo in a few days, and some Syrians are claiming it already, but difficult mopping up will continue for maybe a few weeks.
Thing is he was commanding a tank batallion there, at the best. Probably even less unit size. That could have been done by decent...senior lieutenant.

Someone today said he was commanding SAA tank batallion in Aleppo and that he was Colonel in 2nd Guards Tank Army.

A new grouping underway? Iran missed off the green area. Israeli nightmare, this was not the plan.

According to the French resource "opex360.com" in the article "Les Rafale français ont tiré 8 missiles SCALP contre les positions de l EI à Raqqa", "operation Chammal", which French armed forces are against the "Islamic State", was marked by large-scale use of aviation cruise missiles MBDA SCALP (Système de croisière conventionnel autonome à longue portée). Starting from 15 December 2015, the air force and the French Navy made 10 sorties to the use of missiles of this type. The last one to date took place on 29 November 2016, when the fighters Dassault Rafale from the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and air base in Jordan launched those missiles at the "important military targets ISIS South-West of Raqqa".

A shame such a commander was lost. Those Nusrats are going to get theirs soon. And then we're off to Idlib

5th Guard. He was the responsible for the "Separate" tank battalion that is serving in syria as of now. Couple of guys have been in combat supporting 4th Corps, most of them just train the Syrians (and Hizb). Liwa Al Quds has own brand of operators from 49th.
Also Liwa al Quds seen with current prod Valdai VKP 210 in Aleppo. Liwa and Hizb are looking more and more as proxy relays for the Russians.

Re: Syrian Civil War: News #10
While I would not expect any commander at the level of corps commander and above to have to go right into the front line for anything other than a PR exercise in a reasonably safe sector, I would expect all commanders of division downwards to visit front line in crucial sectors if they needed to see in person exactly what a situation was. It is all very well sitting in command vehicle-complex looking at a wall of maps and listening to countless chat on multiple command networks, but there is nothing better than to see with own eyes and to get a feeling of what happens by being there on the ground. Zakharchenko did not need to be in the assault on Uglegorsk, but it was a critical moment, and while there has been cynicism about what he did, his leadership by example raises morale, and not least his reputation. It would have been very bad if he had died and not been wounded, but it is a risk, and IMO battles are won my taking risk, not sitting isolated a long way behind the front, and these days, conducting war almost as if it were computer game. Certainly new communications technology is useful, there is no denying that, but it can also make a commander more mobile than being tied to large HQ complex, and the target it represents, and nothing beats being there on the spot and seeing with own eyes.Walther von Oldenburg wrote:All of them died in an era when being at the frontline was the only way to get the glimpse of the situation on the battlefield. Today a high ranking commander does not get more info from being at the front... he gets less.Khepesh wrote:These decisions are for the commander to make based on what he thinks is necessary. Sometimes it may be the right thing for a higher level commander to put his life in danger and be at the front, to be seen at the front, to inspire. It they are killed then it can only be seen they made a bad decision in retrospect, if the operation failed, or if successful, that a future operation failed due to loss of leadership by one particular individual. History is littered with this and with various results, Bagration, Nakhimov, "Stonewall" Jackson. It has to be the commanders decision, right or wrong.
The "Follow me!!! Hurrah!!!" stuff should be a domain of sergeants and lieutenants and I believe it is in most armies. And I can't understand the Iranian principle of sending generals to the trenches (they llost like several dozens of them in Syria and keep losing them at rate of 2-3 monthly)

Who was commanding a tank battalion?
Russian Colonel Ruslan Galitsky
He was not commanding a tank battalion. He was a military adviser to one of the SAA brigades fighting in Aleppo.
Check better whose "SAA" brigade he was "advising".
4th Corps is a Russian testbed and he was basically commanding there. Word is that he was killed in Hanano pivot. But instead he was killed in frontline way past Owija and we still don't know in what capacity, there's talk of 3 other wounded from the attack, which I suspect was an ATGM strike on building.

I saw a report that he was wounded then died after some hours in an operating theatre. Clearly a leader of the old fashioned kind, well aware of the risks he was taking. RIP.

And NDF logo on that truck.
ISIS took also control of Jazal and its oil field located ~20 km NW of #Palmyra.
Looks like IS have launched a huge offensive in East Homs. They have now captured Huwayses, North West Tadmur, & are continuing to advance.Map situation in East Homs.

Seems an-Nusra, or whatever name they are using at this moment, have negotiated a withdrawl from Aleppo along Capello road. This from multiple sources, Syrian, Lebanese and from Duma deputy Alexander Sherin. Also daesh attack towards Palmyra is said to have been defeated.

Well being in the middle of the flat desert, with no civilians to hide behind and with VKS on the prowl, I am surprised they lasted this long...

Lavrov said that evacuation of an-Nusra will begin immediately after route and timing are confirmed, and also said that anybody who does not leave will be assumed to be terrorist.....
And clearly some confusion as to exactly what is happening north of Palmyra.

After Aleppo hopefully this area is given attention.
