Original order was for 540 BMP-2M's and BMD-2M's (no breakdown mentioned but would assume mostly BMP's) and apparently there has been a follow-up order for 230 more BMP-2M's. As for the BMD-2M's, have only heard one unconfirmed report of a company (10 units) arriving at the 76th Division for testing and training.

From the base to "Basurmanin". Problems of modernization of the BMP-1
The Russian army has a large and well-developed fleet of various types of infantry fighting vehicles. Its oldest representative is the BMP-1 family of vehicles - both linear armored vehicles and products based on them. They are old and morally outdated. Continuing the operation of such equipment requires repair and deep modernization. However, until recently this issue had no solution.
A sample from the past
The BMP-1 was put into service in 1966 and then went into production. The production of this technique was launched at several domestic enterprises. The construction of the first BMP model continued in our country until 1983, after which it was completely replaced by the production of the newer BMP-2. By this time, more than 20 thousand armored vehicles had been produced. The main recipient of the equipment was the Soviet army; some of the products were transferred to friendly countries. In addition, licensed production was organized in several states with Soviet support.
According to the IISS reference book The Military Balance 1991-1992, in the early nineties, the Soviet / Russian army's BMP fleet included 16.5 thousand units, and a significant part of it were vehicles of the first model. There was also a large stock of equipment at storage bases. Subsequently, the number of BMPs in combat units and in reserve was reduced, mainly due to older models.

At the same time, the BMP-1 has long lost its leadership in number in the ranks. The reasons for this are obvious, and the main one is moral and physical obsolescence.
Update problem
Various options for updating and improving the BMP-1 have been developed since the seventies. For example, in 1979 a modification of the BMP-1P entered service with a new 9K111 Fagot missile system and smoke grenade launchers. A few years later, a version of the BMP-1D appeared with enhanced protection, but without missiles and the ability to sail - it was intended for use in Afghanistan.
In the nineties, new attempts began to modernize the aging armored vehicle. A number of organizations offered their own options for updating the BMP-1 with the replacement of certain units. Basically, such projects were intended to improve combat performance and provided for the replacement of standard weapons.
So, the BMP-1-30 "Razbezhka" project provided for the installation of a tower from the BMD-2 landing vehicle. Together with it, the infantry vehicle received a 30-mm 2A42 automatic cannon, a PKT machine gun and a Fagot / Konkurs missile system. The possibility of installing a tower from the BMP-2 with similar weapons was also considered. It was assumed that after such a modernization, the BMP-1 would get rid of the characteristic shortcomings of the 2A28 "Thunder" gun.
Several projects were proposed with a general index BMP-1M. In the version from the Tula Instrument Design Bureau, it provided for the installation of the TKB-799 Kliver combat module with a 30-mm 2A72 cannon, a machine gun and four 9K135 Kornet ATGM missiles. The old R-123M radio station is being dismantled and replaced by the modern R-168-25U-2, which ensures its integration into modern command and control systems.
The BMP-1AM retains the length and width of the base vehicle, but the height increases to 2.55 m. The combat weight increases to 14.2 tons. The running characteristics remain the same. The crew, as before, includes three people. There are still 8 soldiers in the troop compartment. The exit is through aft doors or upper hatches.

At the end of June this year, curious photos appeared on profile resources. A train with Basurmans on platforms in the amount of 15-20 units was seen near Barnaul. Most likely, these were serial modernization vehicles heading to the duty station. Thus, the fact of assembling the BMP-1AM is confirmed, and the score for these machines is already in dozens. It should be borne in mind that the "Barnaul" batch of armored vehicles may not be the first.
Obsolete and promising
Currently, approx. 500 BMP-1. This technique has long become obsolete, but they are not going to write it off yet. The consequence of this is the modernization project of BMP-1AM "Basurmanin". Its implementation has already started, and the first updated cars by now could get into parts.

In fact, only the fighting compartment is replaced, while the power plant as a whole, the armored hull, etc. remain the same and retain the original characteristics. As a result, some of the parameters and capabilities are improving, but otherwise it remains the old BMP-1. With all this, modernization does not require large costs.
The BMP-1AM project has both pros and cons. However, it is a necessary and temporary measure, and its main goal is to maintain the operability and suitability of outdated equipment. The extension of the resource and replacement of weapons will allow the updated combat vehicles to remain in service for another 10-12 years. And by the time the Basurman is decommissioned, the army will have time to obtain a sufficient number of BMPs of the new generation and carry out a full refurbishment with all the desired results.
The Russian army has a large and well-developed fleet of various types of infantry fighting vehicles. Its oldest representative is the BMP-1 family of vehicles - both linear armored vehicles and products based on them. They are old and morally outdated. Continuing the operation of such equipment requires repair and deep modernization. However, until recently this issue had no solution.
A sample from the past
The BMP-1 was put into service in 1966 and then went into production. The production of this technique was launched at several domestic enterprises. The construction of the first BMP model continued in our country until 1983, after which it was completely replaced by the production of the newer BMP-2. By this time, more than 20 thousand armored vehicles had been produced. The main recipient of the equipment was the Soviet army; some of the products were transferred to friendly countries. In addition, licensed production was organized in several states with Soviet support.
According to the IISS reference book The Military Balance 1991-1992, in the early nineties, the Soviet / Russian army's BMP fleet included 16.5 thousand units, and a significant part of it were vehicles of the first model. There was also a large stock of equipment at storage bases. Subsequently, the number of BMPs in combat units and in reserve was reduced, mainly due to older models.
The Military Balance for the current year shows how the BMP fleet has changed by now. According to the IISS, only 500 BMP-1 BMP-1s remain in combat units, and approx. 7 thousand cars are in storage. At the same time, the BMP-1 has long lost its leadership in number in the ranks. The reasons for this are obvious, and the main one is moral and physical obsolescence.
Update problem
Various options for updating and improving the BMP-1 have been developed since the seventies. For example, in 1979 a modification of the BMP-1P entered service with a new 9K111 Fagot missile system and smoke grenade launchers. A few years later, a version of the BMP-1D appeared with enhanced protection, but without missiles and the ability to sail - it was intended for use in Afghanistan.
In the nineties, new attempts began to modernize the aging armored vehicle. A number of organizations offered their own options for updating the BMP-1 with the replacement of certain units. Basically, such projects were intended to improve combat performance and provided for the replacement of standard weapons.
So, the BMP-1-30 "Razbezhka" project provided for the installation of a tower from the BMD-2 landing vehicle. Together with it, the infantry vehicle received a 30-mm 2A42 automatic cannon, a PKT machine gun and a Fagot / Konkurs missile system. The possibility of installing a tower from the BMP-2 with similar weapons was also considered. It was assumed that after such a modernization, the BMP-1 would get rid of the characteristic shortcomings of the 2A28 "Thunder" gun.
Several projects were proposed with a general index BMP-1M. In the version from the Tula Instrument Design Bureau, it provided for the installation of the TKB-799 Kliver combat module with a 30-mm 2A72 cannon, a machine gun and four 9K135 Kornet ATGM missiles. The project of the same name from the Muromteplovoz enterprise proposed replacing the original tower with MB2-03 or MB2-05 combat modules. Delivery of more than 60 upgraded BMP-2M vehicles was planned for the year. Probably this number also includes machines after major repairs without installing the Berezhok module.

Not sure of the accuracy of, but seen an exchange on twitter in Russian concerning the costs of upgrading the BMP-2 and BMP-1 instead of just purchasing a new BMP-3. So for the price of 1 new BMP-3 (130 mil): 4 BMP-2M upgrades (33 mil) or 5.5 BMP-1AM (24 mil) upgrades. Seems plausible however strictly unofficial sources.

As you can see, the two vehicles are a different generation so the BMP-2 is faster and has proper main armament stabilisation and autoloading because it is an auto cannon, but bare in mind that the upgraded BMP-1 probably also has new night and all weather optics and has a 30mm cannon fitted with full stabilisation too... new externally mounted ATGMs are fitted too and a more powerful engine and improved transmission...
Both of course will also have improved armour design and probably airburst 30mm cannon shells as simple relatively cheap upgrades that improve performance without making it too expensive or slow it down.
As you can see from the effects on target, the HE rounds obliterated the concrete target, though the 30mm cannon burst of three rounds did break it down too... on the tank target the difference was more clear in that the 73mm round is a bit like an RPG and can penetrate quite a bit of armour, which is beyond any 30mm calibre weapon... Low rate of fire and limited range are drawbacks for the 73mm weapon but they are different enough to actually compliment the 30mm gun, so the upgraded BMP-1 getting a 30mm gun is a little sad... but the fire power will still be rather impressive and be able to fire accurately on the move.
The 73mm round the BMP-1 fires can be seen in the video above and is essentially the same round the SPG-9 recoilless rifle fires but because obviously the 73mm gun on the BMP-1 doesn't allow back blast it does have recoil and uses less propellent for the same performance.
Note the fact that a new version of the SPG-9 is being developed for special forces use shows it is still a useful weapon and any upgraded ammo could have been used in modified form in BMP-1 guns too... perhaps for export they might develop modular rounds with an extra screw on propellent stub charge for the SPG-9M, and using the round without the charge in the BMP-1...
The main problem will be the new round would need the sights recalibrated in the optics...
You could take advantage of the modular propellent load for longer range shots with perhaps HE rounds for example so the add on propellent module could come in a weak, medium, and strong version for close, medium range, and long range targets.
I would expect the new upgraded recoilless rifles will have a digital day night sight with ballistics computer to indicate point of aim and laser range finder... they could probably also implement the laser triggered airburst fuse for the HE rounds...
Both of course will also have improved armour design and probably airburst 30mm cannon shells as simple relatively cheap upgrades that improve performance without making it too expensive or slow it down.

Read an exchange between several Russian bloggers on the weekend that:
1 - second batch of BMP-1AM's were delivered very end of December or first of January. No mention from the Defense ministry but they are not chatty at the best of times
2 - mentioned that the AFV's total of 800 story had to have a typo due the individual categories equaling 900 units (noticed that myself). Argument between it being 180 BMP-2M's instead of 280 or 200 BTR-82A/AM instead of 300. Have seen it listed on the Defense ministry web site as 300 BTR-82A/AM but no exact total mentioned there for the BMP-2M's so the BMP-2M's being 180 would be the best guess here.

Just for clarity franco one new BMP-3 is not 130million US dollars is it... considering a T-90 is just under 3 million.

That works out at about 1.7 million US dollars which is quite expensive... while at 8.25 million rubles per BMP-2M upgrade that is about $111K US dollars per BMP-2M upgrade and 4.3 million rubles per BMP-1 upgrade which is about 60K per vehicle...
It makes the upgrades sound quite sensible... especially when there are BMP vehicles all pretty much ready in all the new vehicle families so the BMPs will likely get replaced faster than any other vehicle type because there are Armata and Kurganets and Boomerang BMPs and BTRs already developed and ready for service or very close to with minor changes (boomerang and Kurganets).

Which means for the price of one BMP-3 you can have 15 BMP-2 upgrades, or about 28 upgraded BMP-1s.
So if you need 2,000 new BMPs that would be 3.4 billion US dollars in BMP-3s, 220 million US dollars in BMP-2 upgrades, or 120 million US dollars... I think it is pretty clear that different level divisions wont need BMP-3s so you are never likely to go for all BMP-3s anyway, but the savings in the upgraded models it pretty clear...
But also pretty understandable that upgrading a vehicle and making a brand new one are always going to be very different prices.
The key thing is that the upgraded BMP-1s and BMP-2s are quite capable with new optics and sensors and decent weapons and communications systems... these are not the same vehicles from the 1980s in all the key areas.
So if you need 2,000 new BMPs that would be 3.4 billion US dollars in BMP-3s, 220 million US dollars in BMP-2 upgrades, or 120 million US dollars... I think it is pretty clear that different level divisions wont need BMP-3s so you are never likely to go for all BMP-3s anyway, but the savings in the upgraded models it pretty clear...
But also pretty understandable that upgrading a vehicle and making a brand new one are always going to be very different prices.
The key thing is that the upgraded BMP-1s and BMP-2s are quite capable with new optics and sensors and decent weapons and communications systems... these are not the same vehicles from the 1980s in all the key areas.

Interesting that the 3UBR10 and 3UBR11 both have the new plastic driving bands while the older 3UBR6 and 3UBR8 have a copper driving band.
I guess that should be obvious from the designations with the higher numbers being more modern.
The plastic driving bands being cheaper and lighter and offering lower resistance or bore friction so you get higher muzzle velocities for the same weight of projectile and propellant, plus you get less wear and tear on the barrel when firing.
Not with a cannon shell they have these driving bands to engage the rifling on the barrel to make the projectiles spin and stabilise point forward in flight.
With a normal rifle bullet it is the sides of the projectile that engage but cannon shells are normally made of harder metals that would not engage the rifling as well and would wear out the barrels faster too.
Just changing the driving band from copper to plastic makes them cheaper to make, marginally lighter, and better performing in the field for all existing guns that don't need modification or conversion to use it.
The guns just become easier to clean and will tend to last longer because of the reduced friction.
A really important development that is often overlooked because it is not as exciting as new calibres etc.
