The head of Myanmar's largest party calls for Russia's support in the fight against terrorism, 08.04.2024.

The chairman of the largest party in Myanmar (Burma), the Union, Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), Khin Yi, asked in an interview to Sputnik that Russia recognize the armed conflict in the country as a form of terrorism and join the fight against this threat.

The politician specified that Russian law enforcement agencies could participate in the fight against terrorism in his country.

"The main support we would like is for Russia to cooperate with us in the fight against terrorism. To do this, we must first realize that what is happening [in Myanmar] should not be perceived as internal political disputes, but as terrorism. If they recognize it as terrorism, then their departments and agencies involved in counterterrorism will be able to join us and achieve our goals together," Khin Yi said.

According to the official, the current Government of Myanmar intends to ensure all possible security measures at the national level. Lately, national security issues around the world "are becoming regional in nature, and sometimes even global," he said.

"Therefore, I ask you to study the truth, the truth about what is happening in our country, to understand the situation and support us from Russia. Our party only deals with political issues to ensure security, so we will strive to cooperate more closely in the field of anti-terrorist measures with our partner, the United Russia party," he added.

The armed conflict between the central government of Myanmar and various armed groups of national minorities resumed with renewed vigor in 2021, after the military accused government representatives of rigging the November 2020 elections and used the constitutional mechanism of transferring powers to the commander of the Armed Forces in case of an emergency that threatens the national security and integrity of the country. On July 31, the National Defense and Security Council decided to extend the state of emergency, first declared in 2021, by another six months.
