Its an OK magasine. It focuses too much on the past and future rather than the present for my taste. The two I subscribe to are MDF and Red Star, they focus more indepth on the current issues of the RF.

MDF is Moscow Defence Brief, it is a more 'realistic' analysis of Russian defence issues. It sifts through the propoganda to paint a more realistic picture. Military Parade tends to focus on pipedreams that never comes to reality, although it isn't all about that.

Mil Parade seems to be written by people in the trade, so some of the articles appear to be more in depth adverts than critical articles.

It is nice and refreshing for me from the west because most of the stuff I have access to in the past has been western estimates which are generally negative.

I have bought the "Russia's Arms" catalogs from Mil Parade and have found them to be very useful when looking at all the types of things the Russians have for sale.

    Hi everyone.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I had a question about Military Parade. Does the subscription include access to archives of back issues? I'm gearing up to write a dissertation, and this magazine, be it English or Russian, would be pretty good source for me. I looked over the website, but didn't notice anything about it, and thought the subscribers here would know.

I suppose while here, since Im not sure where else I could ask, I was wondering if anyone could recommend either some books or journals, preferably in English, about the armed forces of the Russian Federation from 2000 on. Anything would be helpful, be it reforms, force structures, acquisitions, whatever. I have a number of sources, but I'm certainly not above asking you folks here. I've looked around a bit and Ive been impressed with the knowledge of people here.

Thanks in advance. If it seems like my second question is going unnoticed, I'll make a new thread in the introductions section.

I bought a CD a while back that had the old issues on it in PDF form.

If you have a copy of the full PDF program then it is excellent as you can search in various ways all the contents of the issues.

The CD I bought was an archive of the older issues, I haven't got it in my hand at the moment but I think it was for issues from about 1997 through to about 2000 or so.

Send them an email and they might have similar offers now.

Vlad , would you have the article from latest MDF

    Russian Military Spending in 2011-2020

If you do can you share with us ?

Subscription to MDF is a pain , I tried but they dont accept credit or debit card.

Same with military parade subscription , its all in russian and for english readers there is no subscription mechanism via credit cards.

That is because Russian banks and credit card companies fight over too many things.

The credit card companies give guarantees to their card holders for certain things but because Russia is not in the WTO then there is a lot of red tape to doing business, and red tape for credit card companies just means high cost for Russian companies using credit cards... so most that I have dealt with simply don't bother.

My advice is to try Western Union money transfers or direct bank to bank transfers into their account... they usually have some standard arrangement they prefer depending on where you are.

I bought a couple of disks last year and it was a real pain that was long and drawn out... mostly because my bank at this end didn't really know what they were doing.

The Russian lady I was dealing with for the product I ordered was very patient and understanding... I suspect she was used to problems in dealing with banks.

BTW they either took Euros or USDs so I checked the exchange rate before I transferred the money and found that the Euros price was cheaper in New Zealand dollars at the time so I saved a bit of money paying in Euros instead of US Dollars. The bank teller looked at me funny when I said I wanted to deposit x amount of Euros into the account... she expected US Ds I think.

Thanks Garry , I am just trying out to get it subscribed through a friend of mine in US to see if he could subscribe MDB on my behalf and then I can wire him.

All this bank to bank transfer etc is a big mess here and I really do not know how that will go.

Damn, that is a shame... though I seem to remember a few years ago the website not working for a bit because someone forgot to pay the bills.

Hopefully it is a temporary thing... maybe they are giving their site a full overhaul and upgrade with a new web manager...

The thing is that the last time their site went down it was the .com site. The .ru site stayed frozen but was accessible.

    Not so this time... Sad
