I know this thread focuses on the Russian military efforts, but I would like to give a big shout out to the French forces in Syria. They have managed massive total of 10 attacks in 3 months. The low number is supposedly because of a lack of targets.

    Vive la France.

Russian air force strikes Islamic State leaders in Syria

    http://news.yahoo.com/russian-air-force-strikes-islamic-state-leaders-syria-121857336.html

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's defense ministry says it has killed several leaders of the Islamic State group outside their stronghold of Raqqa in Syria.

The ministry said Wednesday that it received a tip-off from the Syrian opposition last week about an upcoming meeting of IS leaders outside Raqqa, and kept the area under surveillance for two days before an Su-34 bomber attacked the meeting place. The date of the strike was not disclosed.

Russia is a staunch ally of President Bashar Assad, and it has been accused of using its air force operation in Syria which began in September in order to prop up Assad.

The defense ministry said it is cooperating with unidentified "representatives of patriotic opposition forces" who have been providing Moscow with potential targets in Syria.

Russian Warplanes Destroy 20 Daesh Oil Tanker Trucks Headed for Turkey

Russian warplanes have destroyed 20 oil tanker trucks in the Syrian province of Idlib, carrying illegal oil to Turkey, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

    http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20151230/1032492016/russia-daesh-oil.html

The Russian Aerospace Forces have also destroyed 6 oil refineries controlled by terrorists in the Syrian provinces of Deir ez-Zor and Aleppo over the past two days, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

"Over the past two days, the Russian aviation group has destroyed 6 illegal oil facilities contolled by terrorists in the provinces of Deir ez-Zor and Aleppo," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

"In addition, a convoy of oil tanker trucks heading to the Syrian-Turkish border escorted by vehicles equipped with anti-aircraft weapons was uncovered during aerial reconnaissance in the Kafr Nabl area of Idlib province. Russian aviation deployed a Su-34 aircraft to strike this target."

Russian military jets have carried out 121 sorties and hit 424 terrorist targets in Syria over the past 48 hours.

"Over the past 48 hours, starting December 28, jets from the Russian Aerospace Forces' group in the Syrian Arab Republic have carried out 121 sorties against 424 targets in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, Hama, Homs, Damascus, Daraa, Raqqa, and Deir az-Zor."

Russian warplanes destroyed an Osa anti-aircraft missile system that had been previously seized by terrorists from the Syrian Armed Forces.

"We received data from the Baghdad Information Center about the deployment of an Osa anti-aircraft missile system by terrorists, which had been previously seized from Syrian government forces near Damascus. A camouflaged, reinforced concrete shelter was eventually located, with the Osa system inside. It was destoyed by a Su-34 strike fighter jet, which hit the taget with a BETAB-500 bomb."

Moreover, a Russian Su-34 jet bomber destroyed a major Daesh base in the Homs province.

"On the outskirts of the city of Mhin in the Homs province, a Su-34 bomber launched a strike against a large Daesh militant base. A hangar with military equipment, as well as arms depots and other terrorist equipment were destroyed with direct hits. Five off-road vehicles with large guns, one combat vehicle, and four trucks loaded with weapons were destroyed."

Konashenkov said that a Su-34 bomber destroyed a building where a meeting of Daesh commanders took place near the terrorist group's de facto capital of Raqqa after receiving data from the Syrian opposition.

"Information concerning a planned meeting of Daesh field commanders near the city of Raqqa was received on Monday from a representative from one of the units of the Syrian opposition operating in the north-east of the country."

Russian Su-25 bombers destroyed a terrorist stronghold in the Syrian province of Aleppo, as well as two artillery platforms and an ammunition depot in the Hama province, Konashenkov added.

"A Su-25 bomber destroyed a terrorist stronghold in the province of Aleppo. As a result of direct strikes, a tank and three terrain vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns were destroyed."

Russian combat aircraft destroyed a large al-Nusra Front ammunition depot in the province of Idlib, the Russian general said.

"Russian air group in Syria has destroyed an Osa air defense system the terrorists had captured from the government army earlier, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov has told the media.

According to the official, the Russian group learned from the information exchange centre in Baghdad that the Osa system, captured from the Syrian army, had been moved to an area near Damascus. After that intelligence identified the camouflaged ferroconcrete shelter housing the complex. “A Sukhoi-34 bomber was used to attack the target. A direct strike with a BETAB-500 air bomb eliminated the shelter and the equipment inside,” Konashenkov said."

"Russian A-50E AWACS appeared in the airspace over Syria.

The Beriev A-50 (NATO reporting name “Mainstay”) is a Russian Airborne early warning and control (AEW) aircraft based on the Ilyushin Il-76 transport. The A-50E airborne early warning and contol aircraft is intended to perofrm the following missions: detection, tracking and IFF determination of the air and surface targets, surveilance, command, control and communication functions for both commands posts of automatic control systems, guidance of fighters to air targets and attack aviation to serface targates.

Earlier German Defense Ministry informed about that NATO is preparing to relocate E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft from Germany to Turkey’s Konya base, to monitor airspace at the border with Syria. A third of the personnel will be from Germany."

One more wish come true! Very Happy

Going by the sate published, it is from 3 days back. I completely missed this news. Hope these are to stay in Syria.

Probably this is related to President Bashar Al-Assad's visit to Iran. It would be difficult to watch over the surrounding airspace without an eye in the sky.
The recent NATO deployment of AWACS to Turkey could also be to watch over the flights from Syria to Iran among others.

The only other guys who could do some hitting and missing the action are the Kuznetsov and its air groups.

Yup no need at all, NATO has under its control a fully operational three year old AN/TPY-2 radar deployed at Matatya in the middle of Turkey, which should provide pretty good coverage over most of Syria, plus Turkey has its own radar system.

The AWACS is part of the package that NATO cobbled together to make Erdo feel loved and protected by its big brother. Waste of money really.

The A-50 is different in that it will provide coverage to the east of the limit of the range of the S-400, plus fill in its radar shadow areas. That is when its airborne. As a comparison NATO has 18 or so E-3A up its sleeve.

Germany are supplying another 4 photo-recce Tornados as well. Again, not sure why given the assets already there.

USA pulled out F-15s and NATO is now delivering all sorts of stuff to Turkey except the ones that Turkey wants.

USA & co do not want to play Turkey's game of "poke the already pissed of bear" but they do not want to look like they are backing down either so they have to deploy something to keep up the charade.
