Russia, Kazakhstan to set up joint air defense network

MOSCOW, December 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Kazakhstan have agreed to create a joint regional air defense network, chief of Kazakh air defenses Lt. Gen. Alexander Sorokin said on Wednesday.

"We have agreed to create a joint regional air defense network, which is similar to that of Russia and Belarus," Sorokin said, adding that the Kazakh Air Force would be responsible for defending Russian airspace along the border with Kazakhstan.

"The creation of this network envisions free-of-charge deliveries of Russian S-300 air defense systems to Kazakhstan," the general said.

Kazakhstan currently has an undisclosed number of an earlier version of S-300 inherited from the Soviet Union.

"Kazakhstan is also interested in buying Russia's advanced S-400 Triumf air defense systems, but we understand that the Russian Army should get these systems on a priority basis," Sorokin said.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that S-300 systems would be delivered to Kazakhstan in line with a previous agreement, but said a delivery contract was still in the works.

Russia also offered Kazakhstan to join its missile early warning and space monitoring network, and use Russia's Glonass satellite global positioning network for military purposes.

Actually the more I think about it... the BMPT would only be needed for T-90 heavy brigades (tank and motor rifle).

The Armata brigades will have Armata tanks with 30mm cannons and the IFVs will have external guns and external remote operated weapon systems that should have a range of fire to engage targets conventional tanks cannot engage.

More to the point the reason for the BMPT is a vehicle with tank level protection so it can't be picked off like a BMP or air defence vehicle, but with the high elevation firepower to engage targets that main battle tanks have problems engaging.

The Armata concept means MBT level protection for all vehicles in the unit and the external gun mounts should enable a better range of targets to be engaged... if not with the IFVs, then with the air defence and organic artillery vehicles...

The primary use for BMPTs would be with T-90 equipped units, which also means BTR-T and a change of chassis for MSTA from T-80 to T-90 etc etc.

Weren't they just planning to make a new version of the BMPT? I do recall hearing something like that, although maybe I'm wrong.
It's a sound concept and I don't think that the Russian military has dropped the requirement for such a vehicle (assuming it has such a requirement and this isn't just some defense industry initiative for what they think the military might need).

The BMPT concept was created AFAIK after efforts in Grozny and Chechnia where BMPs and BTRs often got picked off leaving the tanks vulnerable to infantry attack. The BMPT is a fire support vehicle to protect tanks from infantry targets they have problems engaging. On a conventional open battlefield a modern tank can engage ATGM launchers out to long range... even just HE Frag shells are effective at that, and helos can be engaged effectively with several types of ammo including laser guided missiles due to modern thermals enabling helos to be detected from great distances and tracked with autotracking computers.

What the tanks are lacking is close range firepower that can elevate to hit second storey buildings or higher or basement positions.

In fact a long heavily armoured vehicle with half a dozen independent external mini turrets with 40mm Balkan grenade launchers and PKM machineguns in external mounts independently aimed and fired would be very useful too... combining the precision of a 30 cal MMG within 500m or so that could be used to kill specific individuals, along with the firepower of a 40mm grenade launcher. I have read that the US Army used more 40mm grenade ammo during Desert Storm than they did 7.62 x 51mm NATO ammo.

The Russians have not mentioned their plans regarding Aramta numbers... when the T-95 program was active they mentioned a small force of T-95s and the backbone T-90s. The new Armata vehicles will be more expensive to buy because rather than just 50 vehicles in a Tank brigade or 20 odd in a motor rifle brigade it will be more like 150 vehicles in both brigade types because every vehicle is an Armata vehicle.

Because of this the T-90 might remain in service... at least in reserve for some time, which means there is a requirement for BMPTs afterall.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if they adopt a new 57mm or 45mm gun for the Army for the BMP that the new BMPT might also get one or the other calibre weapon too.

Russia and Kazakhstan signed a deal on Wednesday to create a joint regional air defense system, Kazakhstan's Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

“This document will create a platform to secure the defense of Kazakhstan’s airspace and Russia’s adjacent territory,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who is in Kazakhstan on an official visit, and his Kazakhstan counterpart Defense Minister Adilbek Dzhaksybekov signed the agreement in the capital Astana.

Russia has previously had such an air defense agreement only with Belarus, but has planned to sign a similar one with Armenia, although the two countries do not share a border.

The two defense ministers also discussed bilateral military issues including Russia’s proving grounds in Kazakhstan and military education. Some 600 Kazakhstan military personnel are currently studying in Russian military academies.

Well well, interesting. This surely means Russian air-force will go for MIG-35 also.

Kazakhstan's military said the T-72 one of the best in the world, appreciate BMPT, and plans to purchase MiG-35.

Speaking about the prospects of the Kazakhstan Air Force and Deputy Minister of Defense said that the most promising now is to purchase a fleet of the Air Forces of Kazakhstan multipurpose fighters Mig-35 .

It is strange that everyone knows well in advance what Sukhois the Russian AF is buying but only a snippet here and there about Mig purchases...

Hope both Kazakhstan and Russia get Mig-35s as it is the plane the Mig-29 always should have been.

Kazakhstan interested in Russia's Iskander-M missile system deliveries

ZHUKOVSKY, August 11. /ITAR-TASS/. Kazakhstan has filed a request concerning deliveries of Russian Iskander-M missile systems, Konstantin Biryulin, director of the Federal Service for Military Technological Cooperation, told journalists on Monday.

"There has been a request from Kazakhstan but no decisions have been made as of yet,” Biryulin told Itar-Tass, adding both sides are involved in a discussion.

Iskander-M (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) is a version of the Iskander tactical missile system supplied to the Russian Armed Forces. It is capable of hitting targets deep inside the enemy lines. The system’s firing range is up to 500 km. The complex comprises a launcher with two missiles, a missile-transporter loader, a command post vehicle, a technical maintenance vehicle, a set of arsenal equipment, a data processing unit, as well as training facilities.

Russian Helicopters (a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of State Corporation Rostec) has delivered a multirole Mi-8AMT helicopter to the Almaty City Rescue Service, Akimat Almaty, Kazakhstan.

“The delivery of the Mi-8AMT to the Almaty City Rescue Service represents another important step in the continued development of Russia-Kazakhstan cooperation in the operation of Russian helicopter technology,” Russian Helicopters’ Deputy CEO for Sales and Marketing Grigory Kozlov said. “Today about 200 helicopters built at our facilities are operated by private companies and state agencies in Kazakhstan. The civilian helicopter fleet here is growing rapidly, and we are committed to meeting in full our Kazakh partners’ requirements for the latest helicopters.”

“The city of Almaty boasts a population of 1.5 million, and is the rapidly growing southern capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. We pay significant attention to issues related to equipping the Rescue Service with the latest technology, specialist technology and equipment,” said Almaty’s Akim (head of a local government) Akhmetzhan Esimov. “We hope that the Mi-8AMT will successfully carry out operations to prevent emergencies, emergency response operations, and to offer first aid to residents of and visitors to the capital. There are plans to further expand the Rescue Service’s helicopter fleet which will be used during events such as the Worldwide Youth Universiade in 2017, and in construction work on the Kok Zhaylau world-class ski resort.”

Almaty City Rescue Service's Mi-8AMT helicopter was built at Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant (a Russian Helicopters company), under a contract concluded in 2013. The customer's specific requirements were taken into account in producing it. It was fitted with additional equipment enabling it to carry out search and rescue operations and transport cargo and passengers. Its search and rescue function is supported by the LPG-150M winch and external sling, which has a hydraulic weighing system. Additional external fuel tanks can be fitted, increasing the helicopter's range to 1,065 km. The improved cabin can comfortably seat up to 12 people. The helicopter is distinguished by its low vibration and noise. It is fitted with the latest navigation and radio communications equipment, ensuring it can operate safely in a wide range of different conditions. This model of helicopter may also prove to be in demand in other states and by commercial helicopter operators in Kazakhstan and Russia.

All the main models of helicopter produced by Russian Helicopters are operated in Kazakhstan:Mi-8/17 series military-transport and search and rescue helicopters, Ka-32A11BC multirole helicopters with a coaxial main rotor system, Mi-24V attack helicopter and the super-heavy Mi-26(T) transport helicopter. Kazakhstan’s helicopter operators have expressed significant interest in Russian Helicopters’ up and coming developments: the medium multirole Mi-171A2 and the Mi-38 passenger transport helicopter.

Aftersale maintenance support for Russian helicopters in Kazakhstan is carried out by Aircraft Repair Plant No. 405 in Almaty. Certified for the whole Central Asian region, the plant offers a range of technical service, repair and modernisation services to Mi- and Ka- helicopters operated by the Kazakhstan’s Defence Ministry, the Kazakhstan National Security Committee’s (KNB) Border Service, the Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry, as well as other states and commercial aviation firms. A technical service and repair centre has been opened in Kazakhstan’s Aktobe to handle a variety of issues. There are plans to open maintenance and service support centres in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana, and in the cities of Aktau, Atyrau, Shymkent, and Oskemen.

In recent years, Russia-Kazakhstan partnership on helicopter projects has been developing dynamically. In May 2012, Russian Helicopters delivered two new multirole Ka-32A11BC helicopters to the Republic of Kazakhstan's Emergency Situations Ministry. In February 2013, Rosoboronexport handled the delivery of 4 Mi-171Sh helicopters to the Kazakhstan National Security Committee’s border guard service. In August, the holding delivered a Mi-171E helicopter to the Interior Ministry. Novosibirsk Aircraft Repair Plant, a Russian Helicopters company, carried out the comprehensive repair and modernisation of two Mi-26T helicopters for Kazaviazapas. This year, the Kazakhstan National Security Committee’s border guard service took delivery of two Mi-171Sh helicopters under a contract with Rosoboronexport. In 2015, Mi-171E helicopters are scheduled to be delivered to Kazakhstan's Emergency Situations Ministry and to the National Guard.

Russia signs deal on military and technical cooperation with Kazakhstan

MOSCOW, December 2. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a law ratifying an agreement with Kazakhstan on military and technical cooperation. The document was published on the official web portal for legal information on Tuesday.

The move follows lower house ratification on November 21 and upper house ratification on November 26.

The accord regulates mutual military supplies for the two countries’ armed forces, law enforcement agencies and security services.

It envisages a more favourable regime for interaction of the sides in development, production, operation, repair, modernization, prolongation of the service life, and utilization of armaments and military equipment.

The term of this agreement is for five years and is automatically renewed for successive five year periods.

Russia has already signed similar deals with Belarus and Armenia.
