Over 80% of Russia’s missile units rearmed with Iskander tactical systems

Iskander tactical ballistic missile systems are capable of hitting both small-size and large-area targets at a distance of up

MOSCOW, February 22. /TASS. Over 80% of Russia’s missile formations have switched over from Tochka-U tactical missile systems to the advanced Iskander-M complexes, Army Commander-in-Chief Colonel-General Oleg Salyukov told journalists on Wednesday.

"Work continues in the ground forces to rearm military units and formations with the modern types of armament and military hardware. The ground forces’ missile formations are switching over in a planned procedure from the Tochka-U tactical missile complex to the Iskander-M system. As of today, over 80% of missile formations have received the new missile systems," the commander said.

This year, two more missile formations will switch over to Iskander-M systems, he added.

The Iskander-M tactical missile system is designated for making concealed preparations and delivering high-accuracy missile strikes against various objectives in the enemy’s tactical depth within a guaranteed destruction range of 50 to 500 km in various theaters of operation and any conditions, including amid active missile defense and jamming counter-measures.

Iskander tactical ballistic missile systems are capable of hitting both small-size and large-area targets at a distance of up to 500 km to destroy missile and multiple launch rocket systems, long-range artillery guns, aircraft and helicopters at aerodromes, command posts and communications centers.

The Iskander tactical ballistic missile complex includes a launcher, a loader-transporter, a routine maintenance vehicle, a command post vehicle, an information post, an ammunition equipment set and training aids.

Missile systems of Iskander-M of the 119th separate missile brigade of the Central Military District

The press service of the Central Military District reported on April 7, 2017 that the missilemen of the Central Military District, who had performed the first military launches from the Iskander-M new tactical missile systems (OTRK) at Kapustin Yar (Astrakhan region) on the eve, had returned to the point A permanent dislocation in the Sverdlovsk region.

A solemn meeting was held on the platform with the participation of families of servicemen. The combat equipment is located in a new park area with tent-mobile shelters equipped with its own ventilation system, fire fighting, power supply and heating.
The missile brigade of the Central Command received the Iskander-M missile company at the end of last year at the Kapustin Yar test site, where during the following months the units completed a full course of retraining for new equipment.

On the bmpd side, we point out that we are talking about the 119th separate missile brigade of the 41st Combined-Arms Army of the Central Military District (the brigade is stationed in the village of Elanskiy, Sverdlovsk Region). The brigade set of the Iskander-M missile system delivered by Scientific-Production Corporation KB Design Bureau was transferred to the brigade on November 11, 2016. The 119th rocket brigade became the ninth Russian Armed Forces missile brigade equipped with the Iskander-M missile defense company.

It should also be recalled that, apparently, it is the 119th missile brigade that US sources attribute to the deployment of the first combat missile battalion equipped with a new long-range cruise missile 9M729 (SSC-Cool, which was allegedly moved in December 2016 From the Kapustin Yar test site to the base in the central part of the country."

In the Eastern Military District, a new missile brigade was formed, equipped with Iskander-M complexes

As reported by the TASS agency on June 9, 2017, the missile unit of the Eastern Military District received a brigade kit of the Iskander-M missile system. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation [on the Defense Ministry's website there is no message about this - bmpd].

"On the Kapustin Yar test site, a solemn ceremony of handing the Iskander-M brigade kit to the personnel of the East Military District missile unit was held. More than 10 launchers, transport-loading and command-staff vehicles, life support equipment, regulations and technical equipment were handed over to the personnel of the missile brigade. Service, the point of preparation of information, "the military department said.

    Iskander-M/K (SS-26 Stone): - Page 11 4345778_original

This is the 10th missile connection of the Ground Forces, completely transferred to the operation of a modern missile system, was specified in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The crews of the missile unit have already begun to work out practical actions to control missile strikes.
"The final stage of the rearmament of the missile brigade will be tactical exercises with the combat launch of a cruise missile, after which all the personnel of the unit will redeploy by rail to the place of permanent deployment," the ministry added.

The Iskander-M complex is designed to destroy command posts and communication centers at distances up to 500 kilometers, airfields at aerodromes, missile systems and multiple rocket launcher systems, as well as long-range artillery.

The bmpd comment. Thus, we are talking about equipping the missile complex 9K720 Iskander-M with a missile brigade of a new formation in the Eastern Military District, which will become the fourth missile brigade of the Air Defense Forces. According to known information, a new separate missile brigade (the number was not mentioned in open sources so far) was formed as part of the 29th All-Voya Army of the Airborne Forces (control in Chita) and is deployed in the village of Gorny (Chita-46) in the Trans-Baikal Territory, 70 km to the south From Chita, together with the 200th separate artillery brigade deployed there.

The set of the Iskander-M complex transferred to the new missile brigade became the ninth such brigade kit delivered under the state contract З/3/1/24-11-DGOZ dated August 4, 2011 between the Ministry of Defense of Russia and JSC Scientific Production Corporation KB Machine Building", the sole supplier of the Iskander-M, for the supply of ten brigade sets of the Iskander-M complex, and the first set transferred in 2017.

Taking into account the Brigade set of the Iskander-M missile ship delivered in 2010-2011, now ten missile brigades of the Russian Ground Forces are equipped with this complex.

In 2013, in accordance with a contract dated August 4, 2011, NPK KB Engineering has transferred to the Ministry of Defense two brigade sets of Iskander-M missile systems that were supplied to equip the 107th Separate Missile Brigade of the Eastern Military District (stationed in Birobidzhan) and The 1st separate Guards missile brigade of the Southern Military District (Krasnodar).

In 2014, under this contract, the MSC transferred two brigade sets of the Iskander-M missile systems that were supplied to the 112th separate Guards missile brigade of the Western Military District (deployed in Shuya, Ivanovo Region) and the 92nd Separate Missile Brigade of the Central Military District stationed in Totskoe-2 Orenburgskaia region).

In 2015, under this contract, the MSC transferred two brigade sets of Iskander-M missile systems that were supplied to equip the 103rd Separate Missile Red Banner Brigade of the Eastern Military District (stationed in Ulan-Ude) and the newly formed 12th Separate Missile Brigade of the Southern Military District stationed in Mozdok, North Ossetia).

In 2016, under this contract, the MSC transferred two brigade sets of the Iskander-M missile system, which were supplied to the 20th separate Guards missile Berlin twice with the Red Banner Brigade of the 5th All-Arms Army of the Eastern Military District (stationed in Ussuriisk, Primorsky Territory) and the 119th Separate missile brigade of the 41st Combined-Arms Army of the Central Military District (stationed in the village of Elanskiy, Sverdlovsk region).

In addition, before the conclusion of the 2011 contract with OAO NPK KB Engineering, the brigade set of the Iskander-M missile system was equipped in 2010-2011 with the 26th separate missile brigade of the Western Military District (Luga, Leningrad Region). Iskander-M missile was in service with the first 630th separate missile battalion of the 60th training center for the combat use of the Missile Forces and Artillery of the Russian Land Forces in Kapustin Yar (2005-2007), which also carried out the first combat employment of this complex entrance Five-day war with Georgia in AB

I have a question, does anyone know 9M716 Volga? Volga was said as successor to Oka-U, with range up of 1000 km by using two Oka stages. Apparently the project was terminated by KBM sometime 1988+ in favour of Iskander development. The following pictures are what I found regarding the project:

    Iskander-M/K (SS-26 Stone): - Page 11 Dr-igor-sutyagin-16-638

    Iskander-M/K (SS-26 Stone): - Page 11 3

Volga is the tallest fat missile. On Iskander guided by electro-optic, the missile would have a hemispherical front as shown in both images. An Iskander with sharp nose is more likely to be guided by radar image correlator, right? Or the sharper nose would indicate a detachable nose cone for temporary protection of the electro-optic until end game.

The contract for two more brigade sets of operational-tactical missile systems Iskander-M

As reported on August 24, 2017 by the Department of Information and Communications of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Defense acquires two brigade sets of operational-tactical missile systems Iskander-M. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Yuri Borisov.

"Two brigade sets of the Iskander-M missile complex are planned for delivery," Yury Borisov said at the signing of agreements with the defense industry enterprises within the framework of the International Military Technical Forum "Army 2017".

The contract amount is more than 20 billion rubles. Procurement is carried out to increase the firepower of the Army. Also signed a contract for cruise missiles for the Iskander.

On the bmpd side, we recall that at present the state contract of the 3rd / 1st / 24-11th DGOZ dated August 4, 2011 is being implemented between the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Research and Production Corporation KB Machine Building JSC as the sole supplier of the Iskander OTRK -M, for the supply of ten brigade sets of the 9K720 Iskander-M operational and tactical missile system .To this time, the Defense Ministry has already supplied nine brigade sets of the Iskander-M missile system to the Ministry of Defense, and the transfer of the last, the tenth brigade kit Jew by the end of 2017.

Taking into account one brigade set of Iskander-M missile ship delivered in 2010-2011, now, with the addition of a new contract for two brigade sets, the Russian Armed Forces should collect 13 brigade sets of the Iskander-M missile system in total.

At present, there are ten missile brigades equipped with the Iskander-M missile brigade in the Armed Forces of Russia, and two missile brigades continue to remain, retaining the old OTKK "Tochka-U" - the 152nd Guards in the Baltic Fleet Coastal Troops (Chernyakhovsk , Kaliningrad Region) and 448th (Kursk) in the Western Military District.

    Isn't that a Kalibr?

Also can the dual iskander launcher fire the missiles in a salvo without threat of malfunction?

Obviously Iskander can only fire once every three days, except during a leap year when it can fire twice....

The Iskander can deploy one missile ready for launch with one missile tucked away inside the launcher or it can deploy two missiles in a vertical launch position... That suggests each missile has its own erector and can be stowed and put into a launch angle automatically... operationally it would likely fire and then move a short distance and then fire and then move out.

Or it can launch twice and then move.

That's just usual fuel combustion. Happens during every launch but those colorful flames only last for split second and are not usually visible by the naked eye.

However they can be photographed which is what you see here.

The critical thing is the rounded nose shape which clearly sows a rounded subsonic nose.

    There are two conclusions.

Either this is a subsonic cruise missile... or it has a round nose fairing like Yakhont and Onyx covering a nose mounted intake for a ramjet/scramjet engine.

If supersonic then is not stealthy. Doesn't look hypersonic then my bet is on subsonic.

The rounded nose might cover a stealthy scramjet air intake that is only exposed when the missile accelerates to hypersonic speed.

It would be easy enough to make a subsonic cruise missile with a range of less than 500km.... just triple the payload weight for a start would reduce range from 3,000km down to less than 1,000km.
