BAGHDAD (AP) — A powerful Iraqi Shiite militia said Tuesday that at least 40 of its militiamen were killed in an attack the previous day on its positions across the border in Syria. The militia blamed the U.S.-led coalition for the assault but the Islamic State group claimed its fighters had targeted the militiamen.

The deputy head of the militia, known as Kattaib Sayeed al-Shuhadaa, accused U.S. forces of carrying out the early Monday assault. The Baghdad-based spokesman of the U.S.-led coalition, Army Col. Ryan Dillon, dismissed the allegation, saying on Twitter that no coalition airstrikes took place in the area at the time.

According to the militia’s deputy, Ahmed al-Maksousi, they were hit by artillery fire in Syria’s Jamouna area, about 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) from the Iraqi border.

He said the attack was launched from around Iraq’s city of Mosul, recently recaptured by Iraqi forces from the Islamic State group, and was followed by an on-the-ground assault by S militants. Along with 40 killed, at least 30 militiamen were wounded, al-Maksousi added.

The militia vowed “this act will not pass without punishment.”

In an online statement, IS said it staged a three-pronged attack that included a suicide bombing, followed by fighters storming the militiamen’s positions. The group added that one IS fighter was captured.

Several Iran-backed Iraqi Shiite militias have been fighting in Syria alongside Syrian government troops.

AP is another fake stream media "source". That some coalition mouthpiece "dismissed" the "claim" proves nothing. The assault pattern
fits perfectly the several previous attacks by the invader coalition on Syrian and allied forces which were coordinated with Daesh and
which allowed Daesh to take the initiative. That Deash claimed this attack as its own indicates that it is acting as a fig leaf for the
    invader coalition.

NATO propaganda would have you believe that it is the SDF that is doing most of the fighting against Daesh. In fact, most the action
is between the Syrian government forces and Daesh south of the Euphrates River.

    Tend to agree with you.

There was another later report that it was a Coalition air strike and that it was in Iraq not Syria. Only those directly involved know to a degree what actually happened.

Not sure when this happened but it is a good example of how a tiny munition can get lucky, hitting an ammo truck parked outside an explosive containing factory.

after an assault lasting about 5 days the Iraqi Army and PMU has retaken Tel Affar city including the old town.

Its a city of about 200,000 inhabitants and was protected by approximately 1800 daesh terrorists. (slightly smaller than the size of Raqqa).

ISIS operatives clearly want to ensure that no mercy will be shown to them in the future.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (11:00 P.M.) – This weekend, a lone pickup truck carrying fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) was ambushed in the vast desert of Anbar province.

Subsequently, ISIS militants chopped off the heads of all three detained PMU troops. The ambush reportedly took place in the Said area of western Iraq near the border with Syria.

Anbar province remains an ISIS hotbed and the most dangerous place to be stationed in all of Iraq due to multiple raids, assassinations and ambushes occurring every single day.

Despite suffering devastating defeats at Mosul and Tal Afar not long ago, the Islamic State is still entrenched along a string of towns anchored on the Euphrates River, most notably around the long-standing jihadist stronghold of Al-Qaim.

A view from Turkey. More at link

The U.S. has delegated its undercover Daesh agents that it had previously rescued from Syria’s Deir Ez-zor to protect Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorists, as it assigned them new tasks; a group of “terrorists” which had received special training was sent to the PKK-occupied Syrian province of Hasakah and another was transferred to the western Kirkuk city of Havice in Iraq. The U.S. has previously sent helicopters to evacuate its agents from Deir Ez-zor, and another group was summoned from Raqqa by buses.

Two missions for the Hasakah group

The mission of the group assigned by the U.S. to Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah has for the most part become clear. By transferring these Daesh agents to the south of the Mosul- Tal Afar- Sinjar axis, the Pentagon seeks to avoid any “trouble” in establishing control over the Raqqa- Mosul axis by using them as pretext to once again team up with PKK/PYD terrorists to intervene in these regions. These groups have two missions to accomplish on behalf of the U.S.: the first is to create a barrier against the Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi militias, of which the U.S. is trying to thwart their advance west and south of Tal Afar. The second assigned mission is to prevent any possible Turkish military intervention in Sinjar by complicating any plan for launching an operation there.

Their mission is to protect the PKK

Turkey reserves the right to prevent turning Sinjar into a “second Qandil” in Iraq and to protect its Turkmen brethren in Tal Afar.

In order to prevent the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) launching a possible operation against PKK terrorists in Sinjar, the U.S. will again embed Daesh in the area using them as a pretext to interfere in northern Iraq, much in the same way it had done in Syria’s Manbij, when it claimed it had teamed up with PKK terrorists to “counter the threat of Daesh in the area,” which will be used as a shield for the PKK. The U.S.’s undercover Daesh agents will be mobilized in the region in order to ensure the success of the U.S.-PKK alliance in the area as it set out to secure the Mosul-Raqqa axis, which will help the U.S. establish a terror corridor that stretches from northern Iraq all the way to Syria’s Afrin in the west.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. They been conducting armed violence in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.

Most brutal battle against ISIS in Iraq yet to happen: a town that even the US could not conquer
BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:30 P.M.) – The most brutal battle against ISIS in Iraq is yet to take place. The location of this battle is not in central Iraq where a pro-government offensive is now imminent. Instead it will be near Iraq’s western border with Syria at town called Al-Qa’im.

What will make this engagement so brutal is not so much that ISIS has a particularly huge amount forces prepared to defend Al-Qa’im, although several thousand militants can nonetheless be expected to participate in the battle. Rather it will be so due to the that fact the terrorist group enjoys universal support from the population of Al-Qa’im which has in excess of one hundred thousand residents.

Accounting for the countryside and smaller towns around Al-Qa’im whose residents are also universally pro-ISIS, the 100,000 sympathizers number quickly increases to about half a million.

During the US occupation of Iraq from 2003 to 2011, even first-rate American army and marine formations failed to truly subdue the jihadist rebellion in Al-Qa’im.

Despite a number of successful operations that technically destroyed terrorist forces and their assets in the town over the course of 2004 to 2005, the US continued to experience major difficulties insofar as fully controlling the town.

As late as the autumn of 2005, there were reports by American mainstream media outlets that a large sign existed outside the town which read “Welcome the Islamic Republic of Al-Qa’im.”

The general resentment of the town’s residents towards the US occupation and their willingness to physically resist it ensured that a group of jihadist gunmen were always present to spring up and attack US and Iraqi troops regardless of how forlorn and suicidal their attempts were.

Unlike in other areas of Iraq where the Sunni insurgency was initially quite secular and later became radicalized due to a number of external and internal factors that compounded during the years of and just after the US occupation, the resistance encountered by American forces in Al-Qa’im and the region around it was almost totally of a jihadist nature right from the start.

In the end, American forces resigned themselves to just holding a base (Camp Gannon) outside of Al-Qa’im, abandoning their pacification efforts in the town itself. By this time, Iraqi security forces – somewhat driven out by the town’s residents – had long since left the settlement and its surrounding area.

However, even this was not to be the end of it.

The American base near Al-Qa’im came under attack so persistently (in some cases with car and truck bombs) that although no real damage was ever inflicted on the garrison even it was eventually surrendered and US troops pulled back to central Iraq.

As Iraqi forces enter the region around al-Qa’im, they will likely encounter thousands of ISIS militants – may of them with years of experience in fighting US troops – fighting within a battle-space that they have prepared years in advance and who are supported logistically by tens of thousands of non-uniformed civilian auxiliaries.

Moreover, ISIS fighters in the region will be supported morally by hundreds of thousands of civilian sympathizers who cannot imagine a return to life under what they consider an apostate regime which is controlled by a Crusader superpower. With this in mind, an uncomfortable percentage of them will likely at some point commit to some kind military action against Iraqi forces.

    M-16 for sniper?

There are different levels of sniper.... not all sniping is done from 800m.

In built up areas you can be shooting at targets 200m-300m away... in which case an assault rifle and an assault rifle calibre is perfectly adequate.

Note for use in some operations in urban areas the SV-99 Russian sniper rifle is based on a biathlon rifle in .22lr calibre...
