You will own nothing and be happy. People are too complacent about the slide into an Orwellian toilet. Will socks require a monthly payment also?

This is why I still use ancient drivers on my old Nvidia card.

Re: PC technical issues
So I bought a mini computer... it is just a tiny box with sockets all round it to connect things, it is not a huge amount bigger than your open hand... in fact with my fingers spread it is not bigger. It is about 2 cm deep.
It worked out at about $250 NZ dollars and it comes with Windows 11 installed on it.
Having read some bad things about Windows 11 I set the device up without an internet connection to avoid bloatware and any information being uploaded to anywhere.
After I had used it about 5 times... I installed old programs like Far Cry 2 and Age of Empires and Il:2 1946, and they all run just fine... tried to install Dungeon Seige Legends of Arannah, but it didn't seem to work... I might try it again and play with the backwards compatibility settings.
Anyway the thing I wanted to mention was that last time I closed down a message came up saying don't turn the computer off loading updates. It took a few minutes and then when I booted it up again it said Installing updates for a few more minutes before opening to the password screen.
This computer has never been connected to the internet.
I have only put game disks in and it has had no firmware or USB updates attached to it.
It only came with 64GB of eMMC ram drive, which I am thinking of replacing with a 128 GB SSD ramdrive... and when I do that I will likely convert to Linux.

Re: PC technical issues
I do hope that I remember correctly but when I bought my laptop little over a year ago - I got a welcome screen where you have to register your computer with Microsoft (Store) and you have to be online in order to do that. This is the only way you could access your OS for the first time as far as I can remember?
Maybe registration was done in store?
It is also quite possible (and likely from what you say) that your system is set to automatically connect to the internet? For internet connections you will probably have to scratch around in Systems or WiFi settings.
You can also go to Windows Update Setting to make these updates at a more convenient time.
Edit: I forgot to mention Windows 11 bloatware is pre-installed on your PC. You have to uninstall it yourself but some of it may come back with a next update!
Something like Edge is quite hard to get rid off. Also one man's bloatware is another's food and drink!

Re: PC technical issues
I bought it online and when it asked for the wifi password I declined to put it in and said there was no internet access.
If it wasn't already on the machine I would not have put it on to be honest.
And yet it still has that thing where it wont let you shut down while it updates and when it has shut down it takes time to install something... I didn't bother trying to investigate because I have only been putting in ancient games and playing them... I don't use it for web browsing or anything like that.
It only has a 64GB eMMC card so I was going to replace it with a 128GB SSD if I can find one. (This box is limited to 128GB according to the specs).
It is all UEFI based so I am bit unfamiliar with how that works to be honest... I prefer a good BIOS setup...
It says in the specs I can load Ubuntu Linux so I am having a look through my options and will put them on an external SSD and give them a test run before installing something.
Edge disappears when Windows 11 is erased...

Re: PC technical issues
Linux is great and not nearly as resource hungry as Windows, but some years back I had an issue with old games but I'm sure it has improved since then.

Enjoy your Brave New World of totalitarian corporate control. Note how MasterCard can't be bothered with the fact that the guy who got the product
is a victim of any upstream fraud. They just treat him as if he was part of the criminal enterprise.
The problem I see is the potential for MasterCard to dispatch police goons to seize the product. These days the state is a total condom for the oligarchy.

Re: PC technical issues
Huh, that video showed up on my feed yesterday.
I ended up ordering a itx motherboard from China. Chinese brand. AM5 b650i. Was like 160 cad which is half the price of any other itx mobo for AM5. Newest update on the board supports Ryzen 9 series.
I'm excited for it to come in. Apparently works well with 7800x3d as well. Pcie 4.0 everything which is more than enough. Supports up to DDR5 7000, has 3 USB A 3.2 ports and 1 USB C 3.2 port. A 2.5GB rj45 port and a optic port for audio. Onboard hdmi and display if you use an APU.

If he is such a number cruncher, then a Xeon board that supports 256 cores and over a terabyte of RAM would be more realistic. Running on gaming hardware
is limiting no matter how "good" its performance is.
