In December 2016, KumAPP transferred the first eight serially upgraded Ka-27M helicopters to the Russian Navy, which were upgraded under a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense dated January 2013. Of these, six helicopters entered the aviation structure of the Northern Fleet, and two - in the composition of the 859th Center for combat use and training of the flight personnel of the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy in Eisk.
Subsequently, KumAPP implemented the following contract of 2014 with the Ministry of Defense of Russia for the modernization of another 14 Ka-27PL combat helicopters for the Ka-27M variant, ten of which were commissioned in 2017, and another four - in 2018. Including two modernized Ka-27M helicopters (commissioned in 2017) entered the Baltic Fleet in early 2018, and now five more Ka-27Ms upgraded under this contract have been transferred to the Baltic Fleet. According to available information, of the rest of the Ka-27M helicopters upgraded under this contract, six (commissioning 2017) arrived in 2018 in the Pacific Fleet, and another in the 859th Center in Eisk.
In September 2018, the management of the Russian Helicopters JSC announced the conclusion in the near future of an additional contract for the modernization of two more helicopters under the Ka-27M variant.
According to KumAPP’s accounting statements for 2015, the cost of KumAPP’s first contract for the repair and upgrading of eight Ka-27M helicopters was 2.785 billion rubles, and the second contract for upgrading 14 Ka-27M helicopters was 5.311 billion rubles. Thus, the contract price of repairs with the modernization of one machine amounted, respectively, 348 and 379 million rubles.
The Ka-27M modernization program has a long history, and in its current version (product "27D2"), two modernized Ka-27PL helicopters with tail numbers "0909 black" were used as prototypes (serial number 09-09; year, then additionally upgraded as the first prototype Ka-27M in the mid-2000s) and "48 blue" (serial number 012-01, re-equipped in 2008). The act of completion of state tests Ka-27M was signed in the summer of 2017. The Ka-27M helicopter is equipped with a new "radar command and tactical system" developed by JSC "Phazotron-NIIR", including a new acoustic and magnetometric systems, a radio intelligence system, an information and computing system, and an on-board Kopje-A radar with an active phased antenna lattice.
According to the statement made by Yury Guskov, First Deputy General Director and General Designer of Phazotron-NIIR Corporation, JSC, at the Ka-27M version, 46 Ka-27PL helicopters are planned to be modernized (later other sources in the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the figure of 50 machines by 2020).
