Russian Navy refurbished Ka-29 helicopters

December 21, 2016 JSC "Helicopters of Russia" (part of the State Corporation Rostec) reported that the party has completed the shipment of naval transport and combat helicopters Ka-29, which took place at the facilities of repair in Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise.

Apparently, we are talking about the transfer to Russian Naval Aviation of six overhauled helicopters Ka-29, for the repair of a contract which was listed in the work plan of JSC "Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise" (KumAPP) for 2016. The contract value is 435 million rubles. (Thus the price of the repair of the helicopter is 72.5 million rubles).

Russian Helicopters deliver upgraded Ka-27Ms to Defense Ministry

The first of the delivered helicopters was already dispatched to its Baltic Fleet home base

MOSCOW, January 9. /TASS/. Russian Helicopters (part of Rostec) have delivered a batch of Ka-27M helicopters to the Russian Navy, the company’s press service reported on Tuesday.

"The first of the delivered helicopters was already dispatched to its Baltic Fleet home base. In addition, Ka-27Ms will be deployed to the Pacific and Northern Fleets. Upgrading Ka-27Ms is part of the state defense order," Russian Helicopters said in the statement.

The Ka-27-class multirole helicopters of various versions are the core of the helicopter units of the Navy’s marine aviation. They are built to conduct air reconnaissance at sea, provide anti-submarine protection of ship groups, search for, detect, track and destroy submarines and surface ships, as well as conduct search and rescue operations for crews of ships and aircraft in distress at sea and perform transport tasks to support the actions of ship groups.

Russian naval aviation to get about 50 modernized Ka-27 helicopters by 2020

MOSCOW, February 7. /TASS/. About 50 modernized Ka-27 shipborne anti-submarine helicopters (NATO reporting name 'Helix') will enter service with the Russian naval aviation by 2020, Navy spokesman Capt. 1st rank Igor Dygalo said on Wednesday.

"Those shipborne helicopters have already demonstrated their best capacities and high efficiency. At present, about 20 modernized Ka-27M helicopters have already entered service. Some 30 more are expected to enter service by 2020," he said.

Baltic Fleet Aviation Received Five More Modernized Ka-27M Helicopters

Flight of the first modernized antisubmarine helicopter Ka-27M of the Baltic Fleet aviation

During the first flight over the Kaliningrad region, military pilots worked on the Ka-27M take-offs, landings and flights at altitudes up to 3000 m, checked the flight and maneuvering characteristics of equipment at various speeds, as well as the operation of systems and mechanisms of helicopters under loads and overloads.

The crew of the Ka-27M has already made a flight to Donskoe airfield to the place of permanent deployment, where its crew met the squadron command and personnel of the aviation unit.

The next step in the training of helicopter pilots will be the fulfillment of combat training tasks at sea ranges in the Baltic Sea.

Five received Ka-27M helicopters arrived at one of the airfields in the Kaliningrad region last week. Representatives of the industry and technical staff are currently conducting maintenance and seasonal maintenance work on the updated helicopter aircraft.

The maximum east-west extent of the sea is about 730 miles (1,175 km), and the shortest distance between the tip of Crimea and Cape Kerempe to the south is about 160 miles (260 km).

2 Ka-31s can cover 2x that with some overlapping, enough for surface & airborne target detection around a CBG.

It's impossible that ka-31 covers the entire black sea.

From Crimea if flown South, if it can see as far as Turkish coast at 260 km away, it will cover almost all area outside & between the EEZs of Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, & Georgia.
For comparison, the E-2C radar sweep covers 6 million cubic miles. It is capable of detecting aircraft at ranges of 342 mi (550 km) or more.

Even then, a midway between Crimea & Turkey is at 130 km; Bulgaria & Georgia is at 587.5 km, so flying just 327 km East or West of it is enough to cover either coast. Radar operators in 2 helos can see the entire huge area.

Ka-31 radar is weak. And the chance the ka-31 survive an attack from f-16 with amraam are 0. Its radar has a range of around 150km against fighters.

A su-35 or su30SM would do the job much better.

In a CBG, they'll be assisted by Su-33s & MiG-29Ks.
2 Ka-31s on both sides of it will create a 300km, 4 Ka-31s=600km bubble around it, 50km more than a single E-2C. Not bad, considering all the defensive armaments on those ships!

Another blanket statement not backed by any references. Only ignorant twits would use some claim about its operational Wattage as
an estimate of its detection capability. The implicit, idiotic, assumption is that the Ka-31 system is analogue. Without any
digital signal processing. As usual Russians are supposedly always 70 years behind.

The Ka-31 is intended to detect low flying threats to ships, which it does an acceptable job.

it can also detect ships at longer ranges & control EW UAVs.
On overseas deployments, more could be added to a group to ensure continuous coverage. For more deck space, a UDK/BDK or converted cargo ship could join it.

Helicopters of the Ka-31R radar patrol transferred to the Black Sea Fleet

As reported by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on March 13, 2020, naval aviation pilots of the Black Sea Fleet began training flights on a Ka-31R helicopter.


As part of the preparation of crews for Ka-31R control, an instructor pilot conducts training flights together with the students at the first stage - at the helm, and then at the navigator’s place, providing the student with the opportunity to acquire independent piloting skills.

   During flights, helicopter pilots practice taxiing, take-off, helicopter control, the use of a radar station, as well as the landing of the Ka-31R.

   The next stage in the preparation of the flight crew will be the implementation of training flights with takeoffs and landings on the helicopter deck of a ship that performs tasks at sea, both anchored and on the go.

   Due to the significant differences between the Ka-31R and the Ka-27 and Ka-29, the Black Sea Fleet has developed a program for retraining the operating crews of naval aviation helicopters on a new type of aircraft, and training activities for pilots are included in the combat training plan of the fleet.

   In addition to the flight crew, the technical staff, which conducts pre-flight preparation of the helicopter before departure, also masters new equipment.

   Earlier, on February 26, 2020, the press service of the Southern Military District reported that the crew of the reconnaissance helicopter Ka-31R from the naval aviation and air defense of the Black Sea Fleet (Black Sea Fleet) performed practical flights from the deck of the frigate Admiral Makarov in the Black Sea.

Thus, we are talking about the transfer to the 318th separate mixed aviation regiment of the Maritime Aviation of the Black Sea Fleet at the Kacha aerodrome of two Ka-31R radar patrol helicopters, the only ones in the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy (red side numbers "90" and "91", factory 5232004162714 and 5232004164702).

These two Ka-31R (Ka-252RLD) helicopters were built for the Russian Navy at OJSC Kumertas Aviation Production Enterprise (KumAPP) under a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense dated November 20, 2008 worth 908.476 million rubles, becoming the first and only production Ka -31R as part of the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy.
