    Probably because they were ordered to. The USAF is forced to buy stuff all the time. In terms of the LTS design, the design landscape has changed with the advent of stelath. With all the focus on radar cross section, one sure way to reduce it is to make the airplane smaller!!! Also tech has allowed more capability in smaller platforms. Notice this plane is actually quite long, it will probably have quite a bit of internal fuel on board and this suits the RuAF doctrine. I am not sure if the MIG-29 is much cheaper to operate. After all Malaysia has parked their MIG-29s and operates their SU-30. But that is probably more to do with the need to support the anti-shipping role of the SU-30, and their large inventory of KH-31s. LTS is a shiny new object, every air force likes new toys.

    The Ministry of Industry and Trade hopes that the Russian Aerospace Forces will also acquire the latest Checkmate light fighter, Manturov said

    The demand for Checkmate fighters is estimated at 300 machines, potential customers are India, Vietnam, African countries, Deputy Prime Minister Borisov said

    Russian Defense Ministry will order a new light fighter - head of Rostec

          Zhukovsky (Moscow region). July 20. INTERFAX - The Russian Defense Ministry will order a new lightweight single-engine fifth-generation fighter Checkmate, Rostec head Sergei Chemezov told Interfax.
          “Yes, of course,” he said in response to a related question from the agency.
          He stressed that this is an initiative development of Rostec, but the state corporation envisages deliveries not only to foreign, but also to the Russian military    .

    No ways Rostec and Sukhoi would go through all the PR trouble for a piece of plywood for sure!

    Also very happy it's not a VTOL (for now) but I'm still going to have my cake anyway! Laughing

    The LF competition is now wide open with Russia out in front - adding VTOL would have drastically shrank the market and would have added a lot of extra weight and costs.

    This could mean, that a majoriti of ground tests and static tests were already done. Now they have to get it in the air and learn it to fly.

    I guess, it could be Iran. They have to replace a large fleet of jets and price is good. Iran could buy them in hundreds.

    You can call me crazy, but I would bet a few coins that the new fighter uses (in addition to the engine), the same wing and the same vertical stabilizer as the Su-57. Note the angles and wing tips. This is the secret of how quickly it is developed.This is the master move!

    A few years ago, there was talk in the media that the UAE wants to develop its own fighter jet together with Russia. Maybe Checkmate is made by order of the Arabs? It is no coincidence that the first country in the teaser is the UAE

    I really love the fact that they pulled a that sort of intake shape without making it look ugly.
    Also, again, the EOTS shape, it was trye, bigger optics are faceted, smaller ones can be round and treated with other methods.

    Cockpit looks straight out of Su-57 which is great becuse now their best developments go directly into it.

    5 missiles in stealth modes dispels the 6 missiles for Su-57 claim.

    The airplane is about the same size as Mig-29 if not smaller, but im sure the composites share will be Much higher, along with lighter electronics and fuel sensors and other internal systems being much lighter, and two control surfaces deleted, we can be sure that the plane would have a very high T/W ratio.

    A type of top-down engineering that, if done well, can work very well. But it needs another level of simulation and wind tunnel work to ensure a satisfactory result.

    The advantage, in addition to the reduced development time and cost, is to take advantage of the same structure and manpower to manufacture the Su-57. It is possible that the Su-57 itself will benefit from some cost reduction and manufacturing efficiency. I found it quite intelligent!

    The new Checkmate light fighter, which was presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, will cost $ 25-30 million, said Rostec head Sergei Chemezov.
