Re: Afghanistan Situation
Russia is beginning to build a border guard post in Tajikistan on the border with Afghanistan, Russia’s Ambassador to Tajikistan Igor Lyakin-Frolov told a press conference on Monday, replying to a question from TASS.
"The issues [of security] were considered in the bilateral and multilateral context. In particular, a decision was made within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization on strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border. Another contribution by Russia is the construction of a border guard post in the area of Shamsiddin Shohin [the Khatlon region in Tajikistan on the border with Afghanistan]. Funds have been allocated, the agreement has been signed and this project is switching to its practical stage and a modern border guard post will be built," the Russian diplomat said.

Re: Afghanistan Situation
The government the US put into place in Afghanistan was a total failure and without the cooperation of the nations surrounding Afghanistan (including Pakistan and Iran) a Taliban resurgence was always possible. The new government basically kicked the Pashtuns out of power and they are the majority tribe in Afghanistan and the source of Taliban manpower. The Pashtuns are spread over the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan and have hold in the Waziristan pocket in Pakistan close to the border which the Pakistani government has no control over. Then there is the funding the Taliban have from Arab states like Saudi Arabia.
The US had to put a government in power which was both stable and representative of its population, they had to secure the borders, and they had to erect the structures of a modern state. They failed at all of those. Then again the US was never successful at "nation building" like George W Bush used to like to claim. The US built no nation state in Germany or Japan. The nation state there already existed. Good luck doing that in the sticks. Japan was an island nation easily blockaded and Germany was surrounded by its conquerors in WW2. There was no way to smuggle militants in.

Re: Afghanistan Situation
I actually had high hopes when the US went in to Afghanistan... I thought they could help the country get back on its feet again and start developing and growing... but it seems the US is not about nation building any more and all they can do is destroy.
I suspect the Russians thought the same, which is why they opened their territory for support and supply operations for western forces in Afghanistan... but they just bit the hand that helped them again... as usual...

The Taliban banned Afghan farmers from growing opium poppy.
The supreme leader of the movement, Haibatullah Akhundzada, issued a corresponding decree, which states that violators will be punished according to Sharia, and the poppy crop will be destroyed.

Very likely just pretending to be doing so when in fact they will allow it. A bit like US pretend to fight drugs when in fcat they need it to control their addicted population.
Opium is a huge source of money for afghanistan and taliban used to taxe some money on it during US occupation to farmers. Thry don't really have a choice since they don't produce anything to get money from outside.

Re: Afghanistan Situation
It is a big source of money but Afghanistan never made very much of that money... the CIA probably makes more money from it than the Taliban do.
The Taliban have religious issues with poppies so I believe they will really ban it and clamp down on growers and users to deal with this problem.
This is great news for the region... America wont like it so much though.
Myanmar will likely boost production to fill the gap in the market though.

Re: Afghanistan Situation
They want others to think that, but is it cheaper to make than getting someone else to make it for you?
Which Americans work cheaper than Afghans... US State prisoners... would be funny if there was paperwork proving that...

Ayman al-Zawahiri: Al-Qaeda leader killed in US drone strike in Afghanistan

Hellfire R9X used to eliminate the Al Qaeda leader. The Hellfire R9X has emerged as the weapon of choice for U.S military to carry out any assassination. The blades pop out of the missile and like a sword cuts down the intended target.

Re: Afghanistan Situation
The Taliban held a military parade to mark the third anniversary of their takeover of Afghanistan.
Chinese and Iranian diplomats attended the event.
The parade featured captured American armored vehicles. Motorcyclists carried yellow canisters used to transport homemade bombs. Helicopters and fighter jets flew overhead.
Parade spectators trampled the American flag.
