https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exclusive-chinas-sinopec-pauses-russia-projects-beijing-wary-sanctions-sources-2022-03-25/
Sinopec, formally China Petroleum and Chemical Corp, has suspended the discussions to invest up to $500 million in the new gas chemical plant in Russia, one of the sources said.
The plan has been to team up with Sibur, Russia's largest petrochemical producer, for a project similar to the $10 billion Amur Gas Chemical Complex in East Siberia, 40% owned by Sinopec and 60% by Sibur, set to come online in 2024.
But the project is delayed because of sanctions like I said.

Sibur plans to launch the Amur Gas Chemical Plant (GCP) in 2025-2026 and will change processing technologies due to sanctions, CEO of the Russian petrochemical major Mikhail Karisalov said at the Eastern Economic Forum.
"In 2025-2026. We expect that despite the current situation, we will be able to launch the plant with a certain reconfiguring of processing technologies in-situ, subject to sanctions of certain equipment licensors and vendors, and become a reliable partner to Gazprom in this geographic area as well," Karisalov said.
The plant was earlier scheduled to be launched in mid-2024.

Gazprom: Goodbye Europe, hello China and Asia
Russian giant sees domestic and Asian markets as key alternatives to replace falling gas supplies to Europe
Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom will focus its gas marketing efforts on countries in Asia such as China and India as well as the Russian domestic market because it sees no long term future in continuing supplies in Europe, according to a company executive.
Speaking at the end of last week at an industry conference in St Petersburg, Gazprom deputy executive chairman Oleg Aksyutin blamed European authorities for causing the decline of Russian gas supplies to the continent.
He said this was due to European buyers switching to short-term spot contracts from long-term deals, investments in fossil fuels being discouraged because of Europe’s “rush into renewables”, and because of sanctions against Gazprom and Russia as part of efforts to reduce and halt purchases of “Russia’s affordable and environmentally clean natural gas”.
Aksyutin said Gazprom will continue to require its customers to sign long-term delivery contracts to underpin the company’s greenfield investments.
However, he noted the European transition to renewables prevents potential customers agreeing long-term supplies.
Aksyutin added that Gazprom takes the side of unnamed scientists who claim the world is not experiencing a “climate catastrophe” and who believe emissions of greenhouse gases having no connection with climate change.
At the start of September, Gazprom fully halted gas supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that carries volumes across the Baltic Sea, while the company has continued to supply reduced volumes of gas to central Europe via a legacy pipeline transit route running across Ukraine.
Europe’s share of global gas consumption will continue to fall, Aksyutin said, adding that the continent still has a chance to receive Russian gas if it agrees to open the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, sanctioned after the Russian invasion in Ukraine.
China in focus
Aksyutin said it is Gazprom's view that the “centre of the world’s gas industry is moving to the east” away from Europe, with the company making plans to accommodate fast-growing gas consumption in China and elsewhere in Asia.
The Chinese market remains a priority for Gazprom, as gas consumption in the country is expected to exceed the total consumption of gas by all European countries combined by 2030, Aksyutin said.
Besides the existing Sila Sibiri 1 gas pipeline to China, the company is working on two more pipelines — Sila Sibiri 2, which aims to bring 10 billion cubic metres per annum of gas from Sakhalin in Russia’s far east; and Sila Sibiri 3, which is aims to transport at least 50 Bcm per annum from West Siberia.
Sila Sibiri 3 will transit Mongolia on the way to China and is expected to assist Gazprom in linking together its vast pipeline network in the western and central parts of the country with individual gas trunklines in East Siberia and Russia’s far east, according to Aksyutin’s presentation in St Petersburg.
Domestic lure
Aksyutin also said Gazprom expects to see a strong rise in Russian domestic consumption by 2030 as a result of company’s investments in gas processing and polymer injection facilities and an expansion of regional pipeline networks to reach more households.
Two major gas processing plants are under construction near the Baltic port of Ust-Luga and in the town of Amur close to the Russian-Chinese border, producing feedstock for plastics and polymer industries, he said.
Coupled with additional plants to be built, Gazprom expects to send 157 Bcm per annum of gas into such facilities by 2030, three times more than it delivers for this purpose today, according to Aksyutin.
The growth of regional gas distribution networks to increase the availability of gas to towns and villages is expected to add a further 20 Bcm of growth in domestic consumption for the company by 2030.
Finally, efforts to switch transportation to natural gas away from diesel and other liquid fuels may add another 10 Bcm of annual gas sales for the gas giant by 2030 against 1.3 Bcm consumed as motor fuel in 2021.
According to Gazprom, the company produced about 515 Bcm of gas in 2021, with 257 Bcm delivered to the Russian domestic market and 185 Bcm exported.
However, earlier in September, Gazprom reported that its gas exports declined by 53.7 Bcm to 84.8 Bcm in the period between 1 January and 15 September compared with the same period of 2021.

Update: It's not just NS2: according to Reuters, Nord Stream AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 1 undersea gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, said Monday it was looking into causes of a drop in pressure in the pipeline.
"Tonight, dispatchers from the Nord Stream 1 control centre recorded a pressure drop on both branches of the gas pipeline," it said in a statement. "The reasons are being clarified."
* * *
Reuters reported that the Russian-owned Nord Stream 2 pipeline experienced a sudden loss in pressure, and a leak was detected in Danish waters on Monday.
"A leak today occurred on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Danish area," said Denmark's energy agency.
Danish authorities said the leak occurred in the exclusive economic zone southeast of Bornholm island. Danish Maritime Authority announced all vessels must avoid the area:
"Mariners are advised not to navigate within a five nautical miles area of the mentioned position."
Russian energy giant Gazprom, NS2's operator, released a statement that said "marine authorities of Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Russia have been notified immediately" about the pressure drop, adding an "investigation is ongoing."
"Overnight the Nord Stream 2 landfall dispatcher registered a rapid gas pressure drop on Line A of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline," NS2's operator said.
NS2 spokesman Ulrich Lissek told AFP a "large bubble field near Bornholm" was spotted. He noted, "pipeline was never in use, just prepared for technical operation, and therefore filled with gas."
Lissek said pressure inside NS2 usually is about 105 bars. It is now only 7 bars on the German side...
A spokeswoman for the German economy ministry said there's "no clarity" on what caused the NS2's pressure drop:
"We are currently in contact with the authorities concerned in order to clarify the situation. We still have no clarity about the causes and the exact facts."
European NatGas prices weren't affected by the news because the pipeline, intended to double NatGas volumes to Europe under the Baltic Sea to Germany, was never operational after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz canceled it after Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year.
The Russian-owned pipeline, which was intended to double the volume of gas flowing from St. Petersburg under the Baltic Sea to Germany, had just been completed and was filled with 300 million cubic metres of gas when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz cancelled it shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine. --Reuters
Underwater pipeline leaks can be very dangerous. In July 2021, Mexico's state-owned oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), had an underwater pipeline rupture that sparked massive fireballs.

Lots of interested parties with a motivation and capability of setting those charges. But will there be a similar incident in the North Sea targeting the UK's supply?
Now of course we watch with interest on the gas and oil pipelines through Ukraine. Russia reported yesterday that volumes were about 42MCM a day. Will the need of transit revenue (good home for some of Russia's $) for Ukraine and gas and oil for Europe override the temptation for an 'accident'.

Update (0932ET):
Swedish broadcaster SVT reported that the Swedish National Seismic Network detected two underwater explosions near the Nord Stream pipeline system on Monday.
"One of the explosions had a magnitude of 2.3, and was registered at as many as 30 measuring stations in southern Sweden," SVT said.
Bjorn Lund, a professor in seismology and director of the Swedish National Seismic Network, said these two seismic events were explosions.
Here's a map of the three leaks on the Nord Stream pipeline system.
Its not small, 1km across.

This attack is a strategic blow for Russia , even if pipeline is repaired , it sets a precedent for America to attack again , which they most probably will do , without any deterrent by Russia against them . The immediate economic cost of repair must be coupled with the eventual huge strategic cost of loss of markets in Europe . This is an unforgivable attack that must not go unanswered . A proportional retaliation of similar scale of strategic significance is needed , overtly or covertly , makes little difference . Similar American pipelines , difficult to repair undersea , or freedom Gas cargo ship convoys across the Atlantic , a fleet of them , need to be taken out .
Edit : magnitude 2.3 is small nuke .

1) Screw Nord Streams. Ain't no bitch in Germany deserves cheap gas again ever.
2) Russia need to take extra care in protecting the Turk stream and Blue stream. After blowing up NS, these lines would be the obvious next targets for the yanks. Even the undersea pipelines for the far eastern Sakhalin projects should be closely guarded.

This sabotage on NS1+2 definitely hurts Germany (and the EU) much more than Russia, considering they were getting the gas so cheap for so long, then repaid Russia's kindness (and naivety) by stealing billions of dollars of their money and assets. Best retaliation in this case is to do nothing.owais.usmani wrote:Two things:

nomadski wrote:The Russian motive for cutting supplies through pipeline for short time , was to retaliate in kind towards sanctions by Europe and support for the Nazis in Ukraine . It was meant to be short term , Russia hoping for resumption in the future , and before Europe finds new suppliers in the middle East , perhaps after a couple of years . But the Americans do not want Europe to stop support for the Nazis , through pressure of fuel shortages in the short term , or possibility of resupply by Russia again in the medium term . That is why they are motivated to directly attack the pipeline and Russian economy . There is nobody else that is motivated in this way . And any short term gain by higher fuel prices for Russia , will not compensate for loss of revenue and strategic markets in Europe , and huge economic loss in the future .

Very well said. Obviously don't endorse nuking.
But this is a major red line, and the only ones with true capability to do this work are the U.S/UK, although it's possible Sweden/Denmark/Norway, on behest of the U.S could have been behind it.
Either way, retaliation must happen. Otherwise, well.. may as well put a "bitch sign" atop the Kremlin if you can't safeguard your economic interests abroad. It's not a question of whether the Germans deserve it or not. It's a question of another power having hard veto power over whom Russia trades with, and in which way, up to and including the physical destruction of trading infrastructure. Sanctions are already allowed but this...

Not too hard to foresee a possible path of escalation.
Things are bound to "get out of hand" pretty quickly at the rate we're going now ...

This is the new Norway-Poland Baltic Pipeline that just coincidentally opened today. It kinda reminds me of people in glass houses.

Paranoia is paranoia, but on September 2, we drew attention to interesting maneuvers performed by an American helicopter with the call sign FFAB123. Then we assumed that this board was from the USS Kearsarge air wing, and today we looked at it in more detail.
According to the website ads-b.nl , this call sign was used by 6 boards that day, of which we managed to establish the side numbers of three. All of them are Sikorsky MH-60S.
By superimposing the FFAB123 route on the scheme of yesterday's accident, we get a rather interesting result — the helicopter either flew along the Nord Stream-2 highway, or even between the points where the accident occurred.
On Twitter, meanwhile, there were screenshots of other flights of American aviation — the following screenshot was taken on September 13.
And finally, we need to pay attention to the June article in Sea Power, where the Americans brag about experiments in the field of underwater drones, which they put on exercises BALTOPS 22 — just in the area of the island of Bronholm.

a viable consumer base for US corporate income. People forget that the US GDP is to a huge extent dependent on its transnational
corporate footprint. Even if VW and some companies migrate to the US, that is not enough to offset the loss of EU consumers.
What we have here is a Black Adder level "cunning plan" concocted by nincompoops.

Probably the idea has more to do with eliminating industrial elites that do have the means to threaten and quickly substitute the financier shills currently in power in the EU, and then to use the whole continent as a tool against Russia. People in Europe can revolt, but without alternative elites to organize them they won't go anywhere, they will be controlled through increasingly totalitarian policies and used in a extermination war against Russia. I guarantee you that 99.9% of Eurotards are still to this day fully oblivious to this reality

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the Nord Stream pipeline system leaks were caused by "sabotage," and warned of the "strongest possible response" should active European energy infrastructure be attacked.
Earlier, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the three separate leaks on NS1 and NS2 as "deliberate acts," adding: "It’s hard to imagine that it’s accidental."
On Monday, Swedish seismologists reported the detection of underwater explosions - shortly after which large patches of roiling gas could be seen on the surface in the same area.
Update (1445ET):
German magazine Spiegel said the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) recently warned Berlin about the increasing signs of a possible planned attack on the Nord Stream pipeline system.
Spiegel reported, citing unnamed sources, that the CIA tipped off Berlin in the summer about possible attacks on NS1 and NS2.
